One thing to watch for when you upgrade to a larger anchor is stress on the bow pulpit when pulling up anchor. Watch as you begin breaking the anchor out of the mud for flexing where the pulpit attaches to the bow. You might find you need a brace under the pulpit to stop that. The sense of security having a nice big anchor is priceless.
I know nothing about boating but was very surprised to learn that anchors weigh so little. I would have thought at least triple the weights than what you discussed. Very educational video and you are right, the new anchor is a real eye catcher and a piece of art. Good luck on your launch.
Anchors are not an end all. Be prepared to lose an anchor if you moor away from the pier much. Snagging in debris can cause loss due to broken line (chain). I found it's a good idea to have more than one. And you can actually use multiple anchors to position your boat in tight places by using one off the rear. You do not need chain for the rear (without an auto roller). But having that extra (in case of loss) can be quite comforting. Less expensive anchors do have their place due to the possibility of loss. Loss is a more likely cause of inability to use than deterioration. So a stainless anchor, while it may look good when up may be an albatross if you do lose it.
A Day as i was listen to this video thinking the same thing and didn't hear too much about different conditions like sand Rock I consider the anchor one of the most important things on my vessel I do want it to stay put when I drop it and by the same token if I'm in a bad area where I know the bottom has obstacles rocks fish as found over man-made reefs I use a pretty much a throwaway anchor I have left many an anchor laying on the bottom couldn't get to break free
I have heard that an additional advantage of the Ultra (stainless steel) is that the anchor tends to come up clean, so less anchor washdown needed in muddy bottoms. Have you experienced this?
Awesome on the way the boat looks. I understand your desire to get back on the water. Looks like you used the time on the hard to get lots of things done and that will save you more haul out fees for a while. Like the new anchor and it's set up for a safety line if you find yourself with a stuck anchor. A simple hookah would allow you to go down to free a stuck anchor and your probably not anchoring in deep water anyway. Happy sailing.
I don’t believe Delta is a bad anchor, on the contrary it is much better than most of the new ones. In this case your old anchor was grossly undersized for the weight and the windage of your boat. A 25Kg would do much better, and a 32Kg even more. When it comes to anchors, bigger is definitely better, but... can the rollers take the extra weight? Are the screws that hold them sound? You should monitor your new system for wear and tear regularly and have a few spare rollers and screws handy. It happened to me, and when the rollers are gone, getting up this anchor is ...fun!
I agree with your choice of anchor and size. A rule of thumb I have heard is 1.5 times the boat length. Your Delta was, in my opinion, severely undersized. Cheers.
Bill van der Heyden i got 15kg delta on my 48’ sundancer 15 tons. 10mm chain all the way and normaly a 1:7 ratio. Never had any problems, even in really bad weather wich is normal up north in Norway. On my other boat (old traditional norway cruiser «snekke») 26’ 4ton, i use a 5kg delta with 8mm chain and lead rope. Even in just 4 meter depth i put out 24-28 meters of chain and rope. Again never had any problem even tho everyone says its too small. If you got enough chain/lead rope, you dont even need an anchor really.
Concerning theconcern with snagging your anchor, there is probably a way to rig what is called a trip line to your anchir for just this problem. Check with the manufacturer. Nice looking anchor!
Hey there, I am Bill from "Cruising Wild Child". We are in the market to upgrade the anchor on our Sea Ray 370 Aft Cabin and was wondering how your new anchor has performed for you?
Nice Choice just be careful of that swivel, it's the weakest link in your system. Those anchors bury deep and hold hard and side loading can be an issue. Safe cruising
I understand the rationale for a better anchor for your style of boat --- been boating for many years. Even after watching your video, I don't quite understand the rationale behind the "ultra" vs. any other anchor vs. all the other anchors out there. If there was testing of various anchors, I'd be more apt to understand the reasoning. I've priced their anchors and they are ridiculously priced and I'm not sure how much better they are vs. like a mantus or delta fastset or anything else for that matter.
We read lots of reviews of the top anchors out there and Ultra was always rated high - the main complaint being the pricing. It met our needs, and the pricing difference (especially when doing major yard work anyway) - was negligible. We've had it nearly 3 years now.. and not a single complaint.
i wanted to update this thread. I did end up with the Delta fast set 55lb anchor and it holds just fine during a blow. However, when shifting around from side to side, this anchor didn't hold and our 100foot anchor drag alarm sounded last time out (approx 2 weeks ago). So I am now going to try the 60lb ultra with the swivel.

I did get a notification that you were going live 17 minutes before you were going live. I had an option button to press if I wanted a notification when you actually went live. THAT notification is the one I didn't get. Android Phone. :-) I did catch your "Geek" interview. Thanks.
We're planning on upgrading to an Ultra anchor in the Spring. This was a massive upgrade for you guys. Your old anchor was way undersized for a 4788. Our Meridian 411 already has an upgraded (55#) Delta anchor and a Sea Ray anchor roller. I'm hoping we can load up a 60# Ultra. That's basically enough holding power to count as a storm anchor on a boat our size. I haven't watched this vid yet, did you get the Tides shaft seals installed?
Weird, I thought Bayliner switched to PSS seals in the mid-90s. You can't beat a stuffing box for simplicity, but I'm hooked on the bone dry bilge afforded by the Tides seal.
not an anchor expert, but if your familiar with fleming yachts watch his video in california channel islands, high wind, your style anchor ( hollow in stem) turned it into a useless pretzel!
Ultra's hollow shank has got to be a weakness. In that Fleming video cited in this thread, the shank was bent due to excessive side loading while being retrieved under adverse conditions. Rocna's still my top choice.
Yes it held the MY at 60kts first and foremost!!! Second Ultra achor has a life time warranty for bends, cracks, and rust. So all is good. Purchase the retreval ring to pull it up after it digs WAY deep.
I'll just go "pbbbt" to youtube, not that it helps, but makes me feel better. Nice to know sometimes it is them, and not your upload. Maybe someone asleep at the switch.Just fyi, I set my phone with speechnotes open next to monitor(tv) speaker and most of the video came up. Not sure exactly what UA-cam's problem is, if my android phone from speaker can give me CC. Yahoo for phone apps.
Hello Chris and Cherie ...just thought i'd stop by and say hi ..
Hey - great to see you pop up here! Hope you are doing well.
The really cool Ultra flip swivel is an essential part of the Ultra Anchor system. Yes it adds about 1/3 to the price -- but so be it.

I thought you guys were still dry docking.
Can't wait to see you guys afloat.

If you don't already have one, you should invest in the best book you can buy. That is Chapman's Seamanship and Small Boat Handling.

Look at a Bahamian moor for reversing current situations. Works great.
That swivel would worry me a little. Check out Practical Sailor anchoring info.
Thanks again for sharing!

Will you require a special lock on the anchor so it won't get stolen when you are away from the boat for long periods of time?
Never heard of one, or it being a concern.

3 years later, and we still love our Ultra Anchor.
So shiny I need my shades! 😎

Well and how much you pay for the new Ultra anchor
I don't recall at this point, believe we shared in the video?

This is the one that fit our bow roller without modifications.
@@Technomadia got it. So it really had nothing to do with real-world testing and more about your bow roller and fitment. Thanks!

@@Technomadia i would hope for an anchor that's more than $2k, it should work. Thanks for the comments back! Stay safe!

Anchors away mates😎
Have you heard of the winguard internet? Sounds like in motion satellite system.
We have covered the Winegard ConnecT before at www.rvmobileinternet.com
Chris, You could have used a feather duster as an anchor on the hard and not moved.... LOl
I didn't get a "Live" notification. I missed the live broadcast. Bummer.

You can never have too many anchors. Well maybe. I like 2 fore with a lot of chain and at lest one aft.
Still at Sea Lab? 😂😂😂. That was one of my complaints also. Little work but they charge real well 😂. Check out my Yelp review of them. 👎🏻
Because shiny
Hi guys, getting a "privacy error" in Chrome when clicking the link to Ultra Marine West; should be instead of
Thanks.. it was working the other day. Took the s out.
Are you a Diver as this anchor might get stuck
Problem we had on man made lakes was getting anchors hung in under water trees.
That is indeed a concern. Did you discover any tips for anchoring in these areas?
Technomadia no

No, we decided to stick with the classic stuffing box design.
You have stuffing boxes and not PSS seals?
Yup
Weird, I thought Bayliner switched to PSS seals in the mid-90s. You can't beat a stuffing box for simplicity, but I'm hooked on the bone dry bilge afforded by the Tides seal.
Yup, the simplicity is what swayed us to keep it that way. And we've always been bone dry.
Look into an anchor saver
Now do not let it be stolen!
Sooooooo shiiiiiiinnnnneeeeeeee!!!!!!!!

Wow.. found the video. Looks to have been an Ultra too. ua-cam.com/video/_NNQd7CLHXU/v-deo.html
Looks like all Fleming Yachts still come with Ultra Anchors, and they still consider them the best however.

turn on CC please..in the UA-cam upload
It's turned on.. just takes UA-cam a while to process and catch up. Patience :)
ahh, patience.....but I enjoy your stuff so much....thanks for replying didn't know it would take so long, just figured kinda like my speechnotes..
I'm really not sure why this video hasn't processed the automatic CC :( Seems all our other videos have it.
