Damn, I wish BWE was still around, he was such a valuable asset to the firearms community. Zinc phosphate is a light gray like he said, and it eventually turns greenish from contact with oils, the really dark color park jobs also utilize a “pre-black” dip treatment, it blackens the steel prior to the phosphate dip. m16s are anodized (aluminum doesn’t parkerize)

Nice. I just got my galil sar parts kit in the mail a couple hours ago and I was just thinking I'll need to figure out how to parkerize it after I build it
WOW thanks .. Richard a few of my M1 carbine are that green color and know i know how they got that way.. i learn every day. Some of my carbines need to be re Parkerized i wish i had the tools and knowledge to do that. also when you parkerize the barrel and it goes in side the barrel does it hurt the performance ? Richard so sorry to here about your medical condition !!
Yes it can if the tolerances are extremely tight. The media blasting will roughen up the surface and the parkerizing will build up on the surface. Zinc Phosphate parkerizing is thicker than Magnesium Phosphate parkerizing.
No internal parts or surfaces should be painted only external ones. Paint builds up on the surface and interferes with the tolerances between parts. I do not parkerize the inside of the barrel, I plug the bore.
Couldn’t the “nimrods” have used 309 to fuse unknown different alloys together? Not all “stainless” is the same. The reasons for different fillers may not be apparent or may have been for best strength rather than final show finish.

Nice video learned a lot about the process to finish a gun including the sand blasting and parkerizing
Glad it helped.

Your very welcome.
I've bought a solution of phosporous acid that says you can parkerize with it at room temperature. Is that as durable as the heat treating method?
It is amazing to me just how simple open bolt machine guns are. Which is a good thing in the event a mess of them need to be made in a hurry.
They are incredibly simple.

Parkerizing is not hard but you do need the right equipment.
Another great video Huff
Thanks 👍
So if painting a gun which do you prefer Aluma Hyde - cerrakote - duracoat or good old appliance paint
I prefer Duracoat. Les critical in the mixing and I don't need an oven to dry it.

the zinc phosphate is greenish like an uzi or a cetme and the manganese phosphate is a greyish color, you got it backwards
Arent Zinc and Manganese phosohate what parkerizing is??
You should write a book.
I have thought about it but I don't know if anyone would publish it.

I would not let the parkerizing solution into the bore of a match barrel but it will not really effect anything on a standard grade barrel.
@@BWEFirearms Ya THANKS
@@RUSTYSURPLUS No problems.
Cool
Actually it's really hot parkerizing especially in August.
Sand blasting or glass beading?
I use mostly aluminum oxide blasting media sometimes glass beads.
Is there such thing as black parkerizing?
Can parkerizing affect final tolerances?
Yes it can if the tolerances are extremely tight. The media blasting will roughen up the surface and the parkerizing will build up on the surface. Zinc Phosphate parkerizing is thicker than Magnesium Phosphate parkerizing.
👍🏻
Manganese dioxide with a little cupric oxide. Green!!!
Don't know, I'm a gunsmith not a chemist.
Great info. Why parkarize the receiver if you’re going to paint it? Did you parkarize the inside of the barrel too?
No internal parts or surfaces should be painted only external ones. Paint builds up on the surface and interferes with the tolerances between parts. I do not parkerize the inside of the barrel, I plug the bore.
Paint over park is the most common military finish in the world.
@@BWEFirearms Thank you for the clarification, Richard! God bless.
@@jimmyvalhalla1939 Yes it is.

@@BWEFirearms do you have to file a ffl form or other form to parkerize or do re wields on guns?
