Up one evening at what they believed was the wake of someone they both really loved in the town. He came to the door and welcomed them laden with cakes for his wake. I never tired of hearing her tell the story again and again. Each time a different performance. We cried with laughter even tho we knew the story.
Excerpted from his autobiography "Chronicles": "Dylan claims that inspiration for the song came from seeing a prostitute in a hallway at the Plaza Hotel on 59th Street in New York City: "As I stepped out of the elevator, a call girl was coming toward me in the hallway-pale yellow hair wearing a fox coat-high heeled shoes that could pierce your heart. She had blue circles around her eyes, black eyeliner, dark eyes. She looked like she'd been beaten up and was afraid that she'd get beat up again. In her hand, crimson purple wine in a glass. 'I'm just dying for a drink', she said as she passed me in the hall. She had a beautifulness, but not for this kind of world. Poor wretch, doomed to walk this hallway for a thousand years.

I believe it was the producer of Empire Burlesque who suggested to Dylan near the end of recording the record that it might be good to have an acoustic song to balance out the 80s-style production of every song they had made for the album. Dylan came back the next day and recorded this in two takes. It was only years later that the producer found out that Dylan had actually written it the previous night, in response to his suggestion.
No, I haven't read Chronicles. I think I got this story from the liner notes for the recent Bootleg Series release that has the other version he recorded that day. I think it was the producer who was commenting on the song. @@garethhawkins4710
Great. Just beautiful, rustic, emotion. Not polished. No need. The feeling, man. Makes me laugh when people don't get that about Dylan. What they are missing out on.
The gods of steel and glass who were playing way too fast certainly did get a slow down from a virus blast! The drum beats raising the dead to confront the beast, sound familiar - Here and Now? Let’s us keep the faith!
Maybe the alternate take of this song that will be published soon on the Bootleg Series 16 is even better than the one that made the album. Granted, I've only listened to a 30-sec snippet of it so far, but it sounded very promising!
It’s a great tune no doubt, But Dylan’s has recorded so many later day gems in the 90’s,2000’s and 2010’s and 2020’s Incredible career and a real shame for Fans not to recognize the later years
The version of Dark Eyes that ends the new bootleg is so similar to this one that I'm sure they put it in only because everyone forget that this great song was already released
Oh, the gentlemen are talking and the midnight moon is on the riverside, They're drinking up and walking and it is time for me to slide. I live in another world where life and death are memorized, Where the earth is strung with lovers' pearls and all I see are dark eyes. A cock is crowing far away and another soldier's deep in prayer, Some mother's child has gone astray, she can't find him anywhere. But I can hear another drum beating for the dead that rise, Whom nature's beast fears as they come and all I see are dark eyes. They tell me to be discreet for all intended purposes, They tell me revenge is sweet and from where they stand, I'm sure it is. But I feel nothing for their game where beauty goes unrecognized, All I feel is heat and flame and all I see are dark eyes. Oh, the French girl, she's in paradise and a drunken man is at the wheel, Hunger pays a heavy price to the falling gods of speed and steel. Oh, time is short and the days are sweet and passion rules the arrow that flies, A million faces at my feet but all I see are dark eyes.

The same way as me can I hear it all come up from under your minds dark eyes
So sublime I feel it fine
Without old logic or time just my dark eyes
Nothing s lost on me
In the summertime
But Winter blows away
My mind just leaving only my dark eyes
They say misery is here too stay
No matter which way
But I still love you tonight my little
Dark eyes
Then I see the mornings lite
And ask you how you feel now? my pretty little dark eyes
With a little smile
You turned away
Floating back up into the sky
Guided by your
Dark eyes
But I ve never had to recognize or ponder why
Your still my pretty
Dark eyes
Long Gone
And always close by
Watching over me
With her dark eyes
Cause drunk from love
All my lives
Left Memorized
Thanks to those beautiful
Dark eyes
