It doesn't matter what your education or profession is. This has been the case since Soviet times. A man should be able to do everything.

Here in Texas the largest hardware stores are Lowe’s and Home Depot which are about the same size as Walmart. Up in the northern states they also have Menards. Another one is Ace Hardware which is pretty much a small town hardware store.

This is very interesting. It's like a farmers market for building materials. I have never seen one like this in the states. We have hardware stores, we have supply houses/distributors, which are usually discipline specific, and then we have the big chains. Many of our hardware stores have gone out of business because they can't compete with the big chain building material stores. Nowadays if I know what I want.... And I can....I just order it over the Internet.

Growing up we had similar local hardware shops but the big box stores home depot & lowes came in and weeded out brands to promote the ones they can make the most from so we lose selection and competition of brands to eventually on;y have the store brand.

Door thickness is set by building fire code. It has to take certain amount of time for a fire to burn through the door.
We had this same rule on the passenger cruise ships as well. How long they were fire retardant for.
