❤❤ (melodica) This one doesn't get talked about nearly enough. It's so different. Incredible space for it. Would love you to do Icarus by the Big Push. They filmed a 'Behind The Push' mockumentary for it too as promo, so it would be brilliant to see your take on the BTS and then the mv! It's a rock song and Gorran is lead vocals, so completely different again. Nobody ever includes the behind the scenes bit.
The other band members are Gorran (blond brother), Romain (in the cap), and Glenn (drummer not in this one). And some guy called Ben or something. ;) Have you heard How to be Me live? Or is that one of your rainy day ones in your back pocket? The harmonies on that blow Chalk Outlines out of the water.
omg, SO HAPPY to see this one get some more sunlight! I "was" a 1990s hippie (air quotes because some would say nothing's changed) and this one speaks to those roots for me, especially since I also sang in a madrigal ensemble for a few years. While I can't not focus on Ren, Gorran just SLAYS on this one. SO MUCH TALENT between these three people, so much versatility. They go from the Dead Prez to The Police to Nina Simone to Manu Chao to The Stones to Bob Marley to Black Sabbath with a dash of RAtM, to .. and then they pull out... a HARMONIUM and do a 3 part harmony folk song in a cathedral. I guess their version of Praise You in the subway tunnel could give you some advance warning for Swan Song, but... yeah. Edit: bah, I immediately realized I had the wrong name for the instrument - other commentors have it right, Ren's playing a melodica, not a harmonium! My bad.
Rare one :) you might be the 2nd reactor I’ve seen cover this. I love your take on these. It’s a nice fresh perspective. You need to do Ren and Chinchilla how to be me (LiVE). Dare I say it’s even better than chalk outlines. Bongo Bong is another great live one where all three play and sing.
I'm so glad you did this song!!! I absolutely love this and no one else that I've seen has done it. It's SUCH a beautifully done song. Bravo, sir, bravo.
Thanks for the reaction and all the details about the video! I enjoy watching it ☺️♥️ The cover song "Bongo Bongo" (pig push) is a good example of Romain's instrumental and vocal talent! (And the instrumental solos in "Watch out" and "War pig") but also the original songs by him alone are really awesome! (e.g. "Turn the lights down", "love with out feelings" (live), "goodbye good days", "it all feels old", "grey" - the last song is purely instrumental).
Thank you so much for this reaction, Joe. As has been mentioned, this song is highly under- reacted. Such a different song with medieval and maritime tones that showcase the boy’s incredible harmonies. That melodica was unexpected and almost had me visualizing a scene from The Godfather! Please please react to Englishman in New York and Bongo Bong. You will love the sound and the videos for their simple awesomeness.
hahaha "Im a sucker for harmonies" hahaha didn't I have a good laugh with you Joe! haha it took you time to release it man, but well worthy the waiting, you are the first one I have seen reacting to the one that for me is a masterpiece full of harmonics and how their voices work together in that magnificent scenario, just made me think at the moment I saw it, that they literally were angels sent from Heaven to bring the beauty to our lives through music. You had Ren on the left, Gorran Kendal in the middle and Romain Axisa on the right, that I understand your point on him missing his guitar, but if you check some of his solo songs, you will be surprised how well he sings and writes. Also check Gorran... I sometimes question myself about what kind of water they were drinking all these years to be so frigging talented ALL OF THEM. Maybe is the air in Brighton haha 🥰😍 Loved your reaction and your pov on the directors choices as always!
Love this song. It has so much of Gorran's (playing guitar) flavor, and it's fun to see Romain and Ren reverse their usual parts in the harmonies. The way the architecture frames this is lovely. Also, Ren's playing a melodica. And yes, exactly the same feeling when I learned he could play *that, too*!😅
Brilliant use of acoustics in this Church (Cathedral?). Having sung in lots of churches and cathedrals I know exactly how they're taking advantage of the acoustics and natural light sources here. Gorgeous. And great camera work leading in - and out. Their harmonies are interesting here. Makes me wonder if any / all of them have had some choir experience somewhere? How did The Big Push come together? Did they meet at University, where Ren was studying music for a while, before his health forced him to drop out?
In this video Gorran, the blonde guy in the middle, tells how Ren, Romain and him met and started making music together as the Big Push. It's a super cool interview. ua-cam.com/video/eoyPXpDS-tk/v-deo.html
If you want to hear a cool mash up The Big Push does check out "These Boots Were Made For Walking/Satisfaction/Everybody" - might even be a little harmonizing in it. :) Incredible amount of talent in that bad. Three very good singers, play guitar/multiple instruments... thanks Joe E!
we are often taught to sing in canon like this at school, in the UK it's with songs like 'there's a hole in my bucket' 'row row row your boat' and others. It's a beautiful classic folk technique that creates a sort of vocal echo. This is a wonderful song. It doesn't have the popularity of others they have released but those who've listened to it seem to rate it highly. It is similar to some of the original folk music written by Gorran, which is different from Ren's music, just as Romain's is different. The beauty of a band bringing together differing influences and creating songs that are not boundaried by genre is quite special. This is one of my favourites of The Big Push so I'm glad you've reacted to it and enjoyed it too.
Wow a very different trio here. I think maybe this is Goran’s folk influence? It’s beautiful ❤❤❤ I’ve loved it since first I heard it a few years ago. Nice reaction❤ I’m a sucker for harmonies too.
I love the Big Push. All of these guys are so talented. Each one showcases multiple skills. Together they are magic. They could be the next biggest thing since the Beatles. IMHO.
Joe E! As always, your reactions are so heartfelt! Romain Axisa, the guitarist, has some beautiful videos as well, and he's such an underrated guitarist. Blue is an instrumental by Romain but it's visually....yeah. I'd love to see your take on it!
The guy you're referring to that is the usual lead guitar is Romain Axisa. You really should do his solo video It All Feels Old. It's like a little movie and a really good song as well.
Joe E: my brother, your affinity for Romain Axisa makes me believe you will LOVE some of his solo songs. specifically I'd say Turn the Lights Down (it's a vampire-themed vid) and Goodbye Good Days--I commented on his channel that I wanted to play that at my funeral, as I am a writer, and the chorus basically asks the listener if they'll keep the artist's words after they're gone, because that's all he really has are his words...I feel that way anyway, Romain responded, saying he'd be happy to have me use his song at my funeral. he does that---responds to those who listen and speak to him. Ren can't do it as much any more (but manages more than I ever could), but Romain and Gorran both are not burdened by the weight of fame just yet. cheers, my brother, and maybe you could pitch Romain on filming/directing a video for him, who knows?
@@joeesparks7 nice then...and I do still think a mixture like that of you and Romain could really sort of give each other different kinds of inspiration for conceptualizing and filming a music video. Cheers
Heard this song this am for the first time. I grew up in 60s 70s music. Harmonies were amazing. This brought me to a group called Peter Paul and Mary like. Wow!!!
This is so beautiful! It makes my eyes water every time. I really appreciate your videographer insights that show us things that most of us wouldn't otherwise notice. Also love how you really feel the music 😊.
Love your review! If you want to see Romain doing something special I know you would enjoy the Big Push 's cover of Bongo Bong. I thinkk it has everything your heart desires .
I'm glad you picked this song because I've never heard it before. I really like your input on the filming technics because it's something I don't know anything about. Also like how you listen to the music and lyrics. Good job! 🤓🇸🇪
I can’t believe I missed this reaction. I love this song and I get the feels so much with this. Plus I’m gonna be that person, ren looks fiiiine 😂 and as usual he fully embodies the music 🖤
Love this… so different and beautiful. I had no idea what that instrument was until I saw someone else write it lol. What can’t REN play lol????? Great reaction.
Enjoyed sitting through another Ren n friends reaction with you Joe E! Have got a melodica myself (the instrument Ren is playing) i bought mine after hearing Augustus Pablo (jamaican Dub artist) play. If you want to continue down the Big Push side tunnel of the Ren Rabbit hole i'd have to recommend their cover of the Manu Chao track "King of the Bongo" for chemistry, killer harmonies and a great one take video on a rooftop
Oh my, videography is interesting the location adds some natural element of some/all aspects of a great video. But, obvious that yourself/others bring that to life. The Big Push, a hidden gem song- music, voices and the accent, yep I like it...👍🙂☝️🎇☝️🖼
Beautiful. Watching you melt at the end just brought a smile to my face. If you're a fan of harmony, consider Big Push-Praise You. Great acoustic locations are something of a theme. The instrument is a Melodica or Pianica. Essentially harmonica reeds on a short keyboard. Fun to play with. 1140 to go! Rock on!
You have to do Praise You cover by The Big Push. The harmonizing is amazing even though there are no crazy visuals... I feel like no one reacts to that one.
Hey! Love the reactions! Love the way you notice the subtleties. Would you consider doing "What Went Wrong?" There's a part one and a part two. It's an actual music video so I think it would be in your wheelhouse! Thanks for the great content!
Just to clarify: OP is asking for a Sam and Ren song called "What went wrong" and jot that you do a music video analysis series which you call "What went wrong" like I first misunderstood it as 😅

Another great reaction Joe. Love it when you get technical breaking down the video. Cant wait for the next one. P.S. The video was mindblowing at the time (1998). its partially animated by Todd McFarlane who created Spawn and has illustrated Spiderman. It is also directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Farris who went on to direct the film Little Miss Sunshine.
That is a melodica (I have one) love playing it. Great reaction! This is one of my faves!
