Merry Christmas and happy holidays, friends!♥️ I want to apologize in advance for taking the next couple of days to be with Roger and my family, so I will likely be late getting to comment replies, but I’m sending you all love, empathy, and wishes for a holiday season where you at least see some glimmers of how worth it life is. Take care. See you soon.💕🎄
Nothing like them since The Beatles. Wiser than most, to knowledge we toast. In a world uncertain and flying like eagles. Where do we come from and where do we go when we line up to wait? Round a back circle before we are late. ❤😊 thank you for your patience and wisdom.
Again, as always, Ren is amazing. You do a good reaction, but I have listened to this song about 20 times. I finally came to the conclusion that "She" & "Mother", refer to Mother earth and the dying of our planet. Maybe I am wrong and you are right. For sure one of my Ren favs. Merry Christmas to you Becca. 🎄
Such a fabulous interpretation, Becca. I love the harmonies on this track they are so beautiful. I love how this track asks why we are all deliberately choosing subconsciously to be ignorant and ignore what is going on within ourselves and the planet. They are singing a warning eulogy to those who choose to be blinkered (blindfolded), unhearing (ears in their hands) and laughing when they are told that the planet is being destroyed; even though they know that they will drown metaphorically and actually because of the stupidity of those people who waste Mother Earth’s resources, causing climate change and the oceans to rise. They are saying “You think you can build your rockets to escape the earth when it dies, but you’ll just dance on the dry surface of the moon (and probably look back with regret and total shame at what destruction man has caused)”. The Swan Song signifies the Earth crying out in thunderous rage and eruptions, through sea salt tears and harsh words on the wind that it is dying. Mother Earth is begging us to take heed before it’s too late. She’s saying “Swan’s mate for life”, in other words if, or more probably when the planet dies at the hands of those who claim to love her, so will human existence come to it’s end; because like swans one cannot survive without the other.
For me it is a song about what mankind is doing to mother Earth. It is mankind's swan song: "some few thousand years could soon come to rest". "Drowning in her tears": sea level rise, floods, other global heating shit. Or it could be about nuclear apocalypse, rather than man made climate change: "silent thunder".
Merry Christmas to you and yours! This is one I never really went back and watched again after the first time I heard it, I think it went way over my head and while beautiful, didn't leave much of an impact. But after really letting the lyrics sink in, oh man it's haunting. I think the overall theme is talking about the destruction we're doing to our planet and ultimately ourselves, but the lyrics are so beautifully written that it could be viewed through the lens of a single human life as well which your analysis really illuminated for me. One line that really stuck out to me was 'drown by her tears or choke on his time'- Taking the planet destruction view of the song, the tears being ignored could be the rising water levels that will literally drown us if we don't acknowledge what we're doing to cause it, and choking on time relays back to the 'head in the sand' line- sand relating to time as in an hourglass. If we keep our head in the sand we will squander what time we have left to fix it and choke. Man, I feel like a whole dissertation could go into picking apart the layers of this song. Also love that they chose a cathedral for this, not only does it lend perfectly to the acoustics but to me it brings up religious imagery of apocalypse as in Revelations.
I think it references our treatment of the earth, as well. (and the mother reference works w/that, as well) Also, I appreciate that you brought up the lyrics. I've heard this song multiple times but have just enjoyed it for the sound of the singing and instruments, but never really paid much attention to the lyrics. While my interpretation may be different than others, I was glad you focused my attention on them this time.
Apollo, as has been the case more than once, I don’t have words adequate enough to say how much I appreciate you taking the time to type all this out. I am really thankful it was able to help you go back to this song and let it Think in a little more, and I think all of the things you wroteas far as interpretation goes, as well as the significance of the cathedral, is absolutely spot on, and you said it so eloquently, I thoroughly loved reading your words.💕
Merry Christmas to you and the family Becca! This one is definitely one of my favourites from The Big Push. The harmonies are sublime. I have always seen the "her" in this song as Mother Earth. Ren has often referenced homeostasis in his lyrics and I think this one tells of our Swan Song if we do not wake up to the need for this. The melodica was the icing on the cake 🙂
I believe they refer to Mother Earth, too. Could "dance on the moon" refer to us pursuing space travel, etc. whilst not taking care of our actual home?
@@ElphabaRaine Yes I think so. Playing games with space travel rather than facing the very real issues we have here on Earth. Running away from the problem rather than face it. Face the truth that we have to fundamentally shift our value system to something that promotes balance and sustainability rather than hyper consumption and exploitation
Thanks for the early Christmas present, Becca! Truly wonderful in so many ways... your insight, your wit, your enthusiasm and feeling...and, most especially, your heart! May there be many joyful days for you and yours!
You are so welcome! I’m just now getting back to comments, but I wanted to tell you this one made me smile when I read it last week.😊 i’m so glad to know that you enjoy my enthusiasm and emotion, because I absolutely cannot hold that when music like this affects me on such a deep level, and it is an honor and a privilege to be able to share it with other people who can connect. So thankful for you, hope you’re taking care of yourself.💕
... and even in many reactions it is obvious, that people don't get the message. Ears in their hands... Location, harmonies, lyrics, their emotions shown in it are one piece of - more than art... Thank you, for understanding it (even if you didn't get the detail with "mother" earth . Also the "dancing on the moon" line makes sense this way. And the few thousand years... ) Hauntingly beautiful...
I was kicking myself for getting so close to the Mother Earth thing (even mentioning the could be talking about “the world,” and I was meaning “the earth,” but my brain apparently checked out in finishing the metaphor. This song is AMAZING, and it was a blessing to witness. I’m so glad I got to it, and I really appreciate you taking time to let me know you enjoyed it.💕
Yeah, I absolutely can’t believe I missed that! I even said something at one point about “maybe the mean the world is coming to an end,” and I meant to say “the earth,” but I can’t believe the “mother earth” thing didn’t slap me in the face. Thanks for adding it here! I’m gonna just say I was too into the music to get something I feel like should have been more obvious to me than it was…yeah…that’s what happened.😉💕
Thank you, Becca, for bringing me back to this song and for your perspective. It's always interesting to me to get other people's interpretations, which is why I watch so many reaction videos from a wide variety of creators. I agree that the "her" in the song is referring to "Mother Earth," and I also think the bell tolling is a reference to John Donne's poem. It is a reminder that if we do not care for our home we will ultimately destroy ourselves. Okay, that was a bit heavy, but I do truly hope you and your loved ones are having a wonderful and peaceful holiday season!
That is one of the nicest things anyone could say, and I want you to know that they put a huge smile on my face.😁 So glad you were able to hear a new song, as well!💕
@@BeccaDoss i always think Ren looks like a medieval monk in this...maybe the haircut. I have also always been a fan of gregorian chant. So yhe music, the setting and Ren just allow me to fall into that past life of mine.

Perfect choice and song to see in Christmas ! One of my absolute favourites - the harmonies are to die for and what a way to showcase just how immensely talented, diverse and varied they are - so secure in their talent and fearless in diving into a completely different genre of music. Have a great Christmas !

This made my heart smile to read, thank you, as always.💕 I hope you had a good Christmas, and have a good start to the new year (whatever form that takes).🫶🏼
I hate when people say they want to be normal Because it's no such thing as normal Normal is what everyone tells you is normal It's been a hard A couple of years And this year was the worst I lost two people Close to me And I didn't have a job for 11 months I just got a job I had my first week And I could see Is my eating disorder Starting to try to creep back in Good luck in your journey
So sorry this year has been so hard. I pray that the pendulum keeps swinging into the light for you. I know how hard it can be to push through whilst it feels like the world is trying to push you back/down. Sending hugs🫂🙏💙
I totally understand what you mean, friends, and I agree, they’re really is such thing as “normal”. I’m so sorry to hear that your year has been full of so much horrible pain, I’m sending you so much love, and, and compassion. I’m also praying that you’re able to continue this new job while staying vigilant at making sure that disorder does not take over. These disorders are definitely insidious, but being aware of them is the first step to being able to keep them from completely running our lives. Rooting for you, and fighting alongside you.💕
Love this band and how they are so unpredictable with regards to genre and time frame of influences. I have tried to remember to keep you and your battles in my prayers. I have always struggled on the other end of the spectrum of eating disorders. I was over 400 pounds a few years ago and have caused so much harm to myself with heart attacks, diabetes, nerve damage and severe arthritis to the point I spent a year stuck in a wheelchair. It is as they say, a poor person is more likely to give change to the beggars than the well off because they are close enough to the edge to see the possibility of being in that situation so they are much more empathetic. Love to you and yours and hopeful for the coming year.❤️
Merry Christmas, Becca! I hope it’s a wonderful day with lots of spoons. Thanks for covering this, it’s stunningly beautiful and I had no idea it existed! ❤💚❤️
Wow! What a reaction. When you broke into a huge smile as the song first took your breath away. OMG what a powerful moment. You lit up the room and you could see the joy of that moment written in your face! I absolutely love it when you get totally into a song and go into a deep dive of the lyrics and how the music makes you feel. Also, I think that t-shirt is brilliant. So simple but it says so much. God bless and best wishes, as always, from Scotland. #Renegade ✊🏼🐷❤️🔥🏴 P.S. you’re totally right about the rests. Ren uses silence in the same way an artist uses negative space each moment of rest tying in with the music to complete the masterpiece.
Thank you yet again, Becca. Perhaps they're singing of the possible advent of dark ages. The corkscrew may seem to not be moving, even as it pierces deeper and deeper...
