The Cost That Can't be Measured

Bil and Shanon Schmidtknecht of Wisconsin are speaking out against pharmacy benefit managers after their 22-year-old son, Cole, went to get his Advair prescription refilled at a chain pharmacy early this year - a medicine he had been taking for a decade - and was told it was suddenly over $500. He had to make the decision to pay his rent or pay for his expensive medicine. A few days later, he had an asthma attack, and on the way to the ER he went into cardiac arrest. He died a few days later.
The Schmidtknechts are making it their mission to get PBM reform done. There is strong bipartisan support in both houses of Congress for PBM reform legislation, which has advanced farther than ever before. I’m so sorry for the loss of your son. As a pharmacist I see this every day at work. Absolutely disgusting. Just evil and greed on the part of PBM’s. They should remove the B from their name. There is no benefit except to them, insurers and manufacturers.
