I get the same feeling from listening to Doyle as i got from some of my more passionate teachers, i guess thats why time spent with them never got boring or felt wasted. Thank you both for going in to details 😀
I really hope that some young people are learning from these gentlemen who know so much so the information can be handed down so we don't lose information on tanks from years gone by. Great job!!
I truly appreciate you making episodes during these times. When the question of range finding came up I just want to point out what I have written before about Zeiss optics were considered so great Staling forbid any damage to the factories and special protections for the workers. When one takes these rules into consideration, it is very unusual in that the occupation zones of the Red Army in Axis areas I am not exaggerating in saying the Russians were dissembling building brick by brick and shipping the materials to Russia. This was even done to buildings that had bombing or artillery damage. Also, sorry for being long winded, many panzer's had coaxial guns. Quite often these had different charges of propellant so they would match the range of the main gun. These were often used in combination with tracer ammunition or the gunner's optics.
What youre talking about in the last bit is a ranging gun, and its in fact a rather uncommon feature, in WWII its unheard of at least as far as I am concerned. Coaxial MGs did not get any special ammunition that was different from what infantry had, including propellant charge. It still often ended up similar to a medium velocity gun in ballistics, like the 75mm gun on a Sherman, but that wasnt really intentional and just a result of of being roughly in the same range of muzzle velocity. Vehicles with true ranging guns were a lot with the 106mm recoil-less rifle post war, such as the Japanese Type 60 SPRG or the Italian R3 T106 (or any field mount for the same gun), both having 12.7mm ranging guns mounted on top of both of their guns loaded with ballistically matched tracer rounds. Chieftain also has a ranging gun. Overall the concept mostly vanished from tanks with laser rangefinders, but the concept still pops up with handheld AT weapons like the LAW 80.
Hilary must have done something really good to deserve being inside a Jagd IV with such a beautiful and intelligent woman. Thanks to you both, well done!
This video gives a good idea how cramped these vehicles were, even in a roomy vehicle like the Jagdpanzer IV. Also, Sofi is great. She let's her guest tell their story and only stops when she has as good question or observation. This is a skill and a courtesy a lot of UA-camRS don't have.
@@dnf7778 In the beginning she had very little to add, the quality of her appearances in the videos improved as she made more. In the beginning she knew very little, simply liking tanks and being attractive does not make you a good choice for this sort of thing. Now days she is quite knowledgeable in the subject of tanks. Check out her early videos, she spent most of the time smiling and asking questions when with the Chieftain. Major improvement in the knowledge department. Try to contain yourself when you see an attractive woman.
A deadly gun on a bullseye accurate aiming system. Despite the chassis' nose-heavy weight problem, once in place allied armor didnt want to meet this AFV.
Thank you Sofilein for posting these and giving us all the knowledge of Mr. Doyle... Like it's been mentioned before by others, he has that certain something that keeps you listening and interested. Like a great teacher!!!! So much knowledge... Well spoken.
Thanks ! More concise evidence to love the Jagdpanzer IV. Too bad it's an overlooked TD - probably for reasons such as: - the fact the VOMAG plant got bombed thus production numbers weren't high eventually - the fact it was introduced perhaps a little too late to impact the war - and as a result of attrition, it was perhaps (mis)used as ad-hoc tank role, in which it probably didn't do very well. And last but not least, probably the allied forces who got killed by Jagdpanzer IV's didn't live to tell. I wonder if there's more info on this supposed Jagdpanzer IV ace commander Rudolf Roy or is it Roy Rudolf? All I know he eventually got headshot by a US sniper.
That was a great video Sofilein! That was a an extremely informative series on a tank/tank destroyer that I actually always wanted to know about. Very much appreciated!!
Once again very well done! Very knowledgeable, informative and all stated in an understandable and fun way. Also good interaction between you two. 👍👍👍👍🌮
An excellent follow up to your first Jagd Panzer 1V video. I find myself hitting the replay icon four or five times at the end of these ; they really are that good, for me. So interesting. I hope that your memory banks are inexhaustible, so that , in time, you may become a 'professor of armoured vehicles' such as Mr Doyle. His wealth of knowledge must be preserved for the learning of others. The man is a genius, and you an avid student. Stay safe you two. Have a great weekend.
This content makes me think of the amazing tank museum in my home town of Danville, Virginia. The last time I was at the AAF Tank Museum was for an exibition of Vietnam and WWII-era flame throwers. It was an amazing sight to behold!
That’s answers a few questions as to why create this tank when there was the perfectly adequate stuff. Still, from what I’ve seen it seems quite incremental.
Great explanation about the various politics and construction of the weapons system. Interesting to hear about the competing cannon manufacturers competing inside Nazi Germany to get produced. At that point in the war it would be logical for everyone to have their act together. With that kind of gear, could this also be used for indirect fire?
As long as the various manufacturers aren't out sabotaging each other, having multiple manufacturers out there creates healthy competition and provides you with options. If there's just one company out there producing all of your tanks, or guns, or what have you, then you have no choice but to accept their offerings. But, if you have multiple companies out there you choose from what best suits your needs and makes the companies try to innovate in order to beat or stay ahead of the competition.
@@Riceball01 Oh, I agree totally-- but it seems as if Germany almost took it too far. Look at all the competing designs, idea, weapons and the logistical tail it created for each. I'm sure it was a byproduct of where they were in the war as well as having Hitler in charge.
@Max Schultz It's a good systenm in peace-time, but it slowed the development & upgrading of important weapons at a time when the WWII arms race was accelerating. Also, it created a situation where there were too many types of AFVs, which complicated logistics (especially in terms of spare parts) until the PzKfpW III/IV standardization thhat applied to some of the AFVs Germany produced. Finally, this competition system resulted in too many brilliant & creative designers & engineers wasting time on impractical and/or excessively complicated AFVs, aircraft etc, which only served to distract Hitler & Generals from the most problematic issues facng the men on the front lines, and it resulted in reduced production/upgrading of existing designs & implementation/refining of new designs to replace equipment that was becoming obselete.
More power to you Sofilein ! It's gobsmacking amazing to see a beautiful young woman into this kind of shit that i love. My youngest daughter is such a gear head and presently has an Acura she is "building " into a performance beauty. She prob knows more about cars than your average male shmuck. I'm so proud of her.
I can't decide what I like more about this vid... The history, the tank, Hilary Doyle's story or the tank/history nerd gamer girl... I think I need to see more vids to help me decide.
Hi, one thing that I've always wanted to understand is how the optics worked in the aiming of barrel in German tanks. (eg, Panzer series, STUG lll, Panther, Tiger, ect.). Believe it or not, the closest I've seen to an explanation was an episode of Girls und Panzer. In the future could you possibly do a video explaining how they aimed the gun, and accounted for ballistics? Thank-you for all your GREAT videos!!
For those of us who are curious, it would be really nice if you could get a lot of views of the gun, the driver position, etc, etc, etc instead of it just being a view of a chat with one camera angle. It's rare for us to get an inside view of these vehicles and you could spend another hour getting some cut aways.
It's fascinating how the Germans kept their commercial focus on bidding and contracting even in the middle of a raging war. The instinct to simply merge Rheinmetall, Daimler and Krupp to streamline production and decision making wasn't even there. They wanted that competition between companies.
A beautiful intelligent woman who is a kick ass gamer and loves the history of armored warfare. I wonder if Sofi knows how many guys thought that this kind of winning combination was just a fairy tale Like the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Turns out she is real and named Sofilein.
Never mind patriotism, war is a business venture! You're going to build 10,000 Stugs or Panzer IV's? I want my powertrain, main gun or radio set used in all of them.
I get the same feeling from listening to Doyle as i got from some of my more passionate teachers, i guess thats why time spent with them never got boring or felt wasted.

With all these videos with Hilary Doyle, you're certainly spoiling us, Mrs Ambassador 🤗
