  • Ooops, planning on a fadeout for the CD version, I forgot to plan an ending for the video! Bruce Kaphan on pedal steel, Jason Lewis on drums, Jeffrey Wash on electric fretless bass and John R. Burr on piano at Fantasy Studios' Studio A, tracking Weather Report's Birdland, by Joe Zawinul. Audio produced and engineered by Mark Needham. Video directed and edited by David Cilberti. A related but different version of this recording is available on the album "Bruce Kaphan Quartet" available at www.brucekaphan.com. amazon.com, cdbaby, and all the usual digital download sources.

I cannot believe how good this is.... I had the great pleasure of having Bruce play on an album I recently produced. It was two days of sheer bliss listening to him make his magic.

When I was a little kid, I'd see the Porter Wagoner TV show and was always fascinated with the pedal steel. Cool to see it being used in a somewhat different way.

Really nice ! Loved it. Had the vinyl of this and never appreciated it until recently, trying to learn all the nuances on bass... do you need a fretless to get the harmonics ?
Jaco and Rocco my faves... how about a version of "what is hip" on Pedal Steel ! omg

The pinch harmonics are hard to get consistently, but you don't need a fretless. You just need to rest your thumb lightly against the string where the 24th or 26th fret is/would be and pluck with your index finger. If you play guitar, the technique is really common, but it's pretty rare on bass.
It might be easier to discover where the harmonic is with your left hand first though, and then place your right hand thumb there after you've found it.

To be fair he doesnt have to play over a whole big band so he can drum less intense so he doesnt overpower the other players
