Things consumers don't understand is that street photography never required the subject being in perfect autofocus, it was more about how the lens rendered the scene of the subject. Film's low grain density was able to record all the tonality it needed from the lens. A simple look at 28mm lens masters' prints or books will tell you all about it: Lee Friedlander, Gary Winogrand for starters.
I bought the camera for its social functionality and ease of use, but most importantly its colours, people get too worked up about specs but at the end of the day, all that matters is ISO, Aperture, Shutter speed and whats in your frame. The colours help to tell the story and I love the film simulation it has, being able to upload straight to my phone without any editing and posting it online is what I need it for.
Thanks for sharing! I laughed so hard during the "old tar on the road" bit. I love how this camera's video specs weren't even worth Jordan's time to say how poor they are :)
Hey Guys. You did a very fair review of the X70. I have one myself, and you hit the nails right on. But, you sure glossed over McLeod Drive ... so much more depressing scenery that you missed...:-)
Nice touch with the 2 white rabbits frolicing on the lawn of the cementary (left corner of the frame) between 1:33 and 1:50 - Keep it up (the good work) - you are the BEST!Best regards from Norway!:-)
Hi. Nice Review as usual. But why did you completely miss to mention the ability of digital conversion to 35mm and 50mm?? That´s a very cool feature for a lot of situations I think.
Great review. Fuji has hidden their version of snap in the manual focus settings. Go to manual, use the manual lens dial to select your snap length, focal length bar is at the bottom and bang it shoots instantly at the distance you've selected. Go back to to auto settings and it remembers your preferred snap length the next time you switch back to manual.
+canturgan you can keep it in manual snap mode. I was trying to say that the x70 remembers the last snap setting you used. For me it's usually 1.5m.. All you have to do is flick the switch to manual and the x70 remembers the last snap setting you used. Exactly the same as switching to s preset mode on the GR. Done differently but works exactly the same.
If you keep saying "...and $#1+ like that", you're not going to be able to get your photos accepted into Modern art museums. Modernist artists are not skilled, but they keep their mouths shut and let morons speculate about the "deep" meanings. Anyway, great video, as always! You guys are my favorite camera reviewers.
Great job as always guys, except that I just can't understand fascination with "Fuji colors". I own HS10 and XS-1 and just can't see anything remarkable in Fuji color pallete compared to my OMD EM-5 M, D7000 or P900. Granted, sensor sizes are different, but none of the Fujis can better even my MX-1 and that was a $260 camera. and price for X70 over $900 for a camera with no viewfinder , are you kidding me?
+Teoh Yi Chie We used the Rode Filmmakers Kit for this video. The included Rode Lavalier mic rejects background noise extremely well. We do find the wireless units themselves a bit clunky and bulky, but the audio quality is top notch. Jordan @ TCSTV
The X-70 reviewed here better than I was expecting. Other reviews seem to be more negative. But you guys I feel are the most honest and down to earth of the reviewers out there...so I go by what you guys say more than others.
Hey Chris, what do you think of the internal digital teleconverter that lets you zoom in to a 35mm and 50mm focal length. How does it affect the image quality?
Hi! I'd like to get a small compact camera that I can carry around all the time, for spontaneous street photography as well as some outdoor shots when I go hiking and whatnot. I got my eyes on the X70 and the X100T, as I really like the design, the clicking aperture ring and the shutter speed dial. Now I'm more keen on the X70 as it's cheaper, more recent, more compact and maybe I can come to terms with the lack of a viewfinder. My other two options at the moment are the Ricoh GR II and the Panasonic GX80. I understand that the RIcoh GR II might be better for picture quality, but I'm having a really hard time giving up on the aperture ring and the shutter speed dial. I keep changing my mind until a point that I need someone to tell me what to do, lol. Any suggestion? Am I missing something else? Or perhaps there is something new that is going to be released soon that might be worth waiting for? Thanks and sorry for the long post!
allagogna did you buy it? Or like what did you buy? Cause I'm looking for a camera i can carry around with me and I'd use it to take some photos with my friends and i would shoot things i like, like my cat and all but i would like a good video quality too and i really don't like editing so I'm really confused cause a lot of people suggested me sony a6000 but I'm not sure about the colour anyways i saw your comment and just wanted to know what you did. Thanks.
In a John Candy Voice..."Hey kids...It's like Digital Rev but with locations in the ghetto. What are you looking at buster? Rawwwr I'm more than just Barf you know! I was in Cool Runnings. Cool Freaking Runnings!" But, that guy with the bucket coming down the hill. Cue Benny Hill music.
What do you guys think of Fuji's companion app? I think that would be a good addition to the review as younger photographers want to find the quickest way to get their photos on to social media.
Here is a reason NOT to buy this or any Fuji camera - the now infamous "Lens Control Error" that appears on several of their older products. This well-known issue arises as a result of a poor design by Fuji. There is a ribbon-cable inside the lens-barrel that gets pinched by the movement of the lens in and out, and it eventually tears. It is just a matter of time - happens to them all with use. Since Fuji ignores this issue I advise voting with your feet and NOT buying their products. They need to acknowledge and take responsibility for this massive issue affecting tens of thousands of users out there.
Hi, 1st of all tnx so much for this great review! I'm a bit concerned about the filter adapter because this makes everything way thicker - have you tried to screw a 49mm filter on the lens the other way round? does AF still work?
nice but for this price I was expect 1,4 , 1.7 at least on apcs today you start from $400 double zoom(18-55 +70-300 0r 55-200)+ case set on entry level of canon and nikon. and a600 double zoom(16-50 +55-200) set for $600 from sony. yeah I knew that it Fuji, but still it's hobby camera, that not make money. so as always in Fuji it overpriced and I believe that viewfinder will be extremely expensive, as a wide angle adapter. so I guess we going close to Canon 6d that FF
Hi I have very important question to ask you: since focal length of x70 lens at eq.28, 35, 50mm is electronic and not native/real as eq.35 in x100 (and eq.28, 50 wcl/tcl), are the quality of result photos (jpeg and raw both) same for printing and exhibition presentation?
Hey guys, I need some advice. I am looking for a relatively compact camera for under 1K that will be a decent substitute for my Ninkon D750. It needs to be small enough to carry in my purse or a relatively small bag. It will be used for kids, animals, some portraiture and landscape, and random other sightseeing/vacation type stuff. I have the list narrowed down to the following: Panasonic Lumix DMC LX100, Sony RX100 III/IV, or a Sony A6000. I need it to be compact, lightweight and fast, does a good job as a point and shoot but has decent manual controls as well. I do a lot of close-up and macro shooting, so one that can handle macro shots with a lot of yummy blending in the background would be great. Any suggestions would be great, because I need to make a decision fast!
Hi, thank you for your video. since eq28, 35, 50mm are electronic focal length and not native one as x100t at 23mm (and eq28, 50mm wcl, tcl) is the quality of photos in jpeg and raw results, same as x100t?
Fuji knows the video sucks on this camera...that's why the record button was deliberately made to be difficult to access in order to discourage its use. Too bad for those looking for a dual purpose camera. I've got a little Nikon J5 and it takes amazing photos AND video with a 18.5mm f1.8 lens despite its small 1" sensor.
Fuji actually claims that ACROS requires processing power that earlier Xtrans processors don't have. That's why it's only possible to enable it on X-Pro2 atm.
hey saw a 1300D announcement. Contender for worst camera 2016. Why not force jordan to record an episode on it =) Revenge for what he did to Levi last year. (XC-10)
Glad Fuji made this because I hope it destroys sales of the Ricoh GRII. The GRII is, while a good cam, is a dust magnet, with respect to the sensor. I had two, both ended up being returned for dust issues, despite babying them. It is despicable that they released the v.2 without fixing that.
I was looking into this camera and was wondering if it was good for new users. Im not a crazy camera person but I like taking pictures on vacations or special events etc. Would you recommend this camera or something else in this price range?
I love my X70. I'm a big guy with big hands, so it took some getting used to. However, now I have found a manual setup that works great for me. The screen is not an issue when you're not chimping. & it's no worse than the GR. It's fast, it's silent, & most of all it's stealthy. Check out RLxPress on IG, tell me how you think it's doing. Great Review Chris! Keep em coming!
Thanks for the review. I was really hanging out for the X70 due to it being smaller that the X100t and flip & touch screen, however after this I am realizing that 23mm f2 will give significantly better DOF than the 18mm f2.8. Edge sharpness on both cams is so-so. This leaves choice based on 1) size 2) viewfinder 3) LCD features and 4) price Tough call. The there is the XT10 with 27mm pancake (I already own the lens)... Hm.
why i feel the speaker is stand in front of a picture or screen or something, not only bokeh, but the color feels separate, why is that ,is there fill light ?
Thanks for the vid guys. I'm pretty well set up with MFT but I'd like one Fuji to experiment with. I don't really want to buy into a whole new lens system just yet, so I thought the X-70 might be a good way to go. But after watching this it seems like an x100t, or an X-e2s or X-t10 with a decent prime would be a better idea.
@jordandrake What lens are you shooting with on the Fs5. I have a two gh4s and thinking of upgrading to the fs5. The image looks great on this video, was it 4k downscaled to 1080 or just 10 bit 1080p. Thanks
+jampoid dude learn how to use it. It isn't constant AF. Either stop down for deeper DOF or only use on a static plane. Fuji is very clear that AF is not continuous in high speed continuous with the X100S.
I know, I know. The X100s it's not made to do sport/fast moving subjects. It does well other things though, like near to zero color noise. I love shooting with it in the streets, but it loses focus too often (infact I prefer to shoot full manual+auto iso). But I think for some shots having a not bad (I don't mean blazing fast) focusing, it will be better. Maybe I can try the X100T.
+jampoid the X100S AF isn't bad. You should try the X-Pro1. With the X100S you need to make sure to do 2 things: 1) turn on "corrected AF point" in menu if you use the OVF 2) stick the the 9 inner Phase Detect AF points
I love this little camera. I use it for street photography and its next to invisible. I also like the digital tele converter. I can shoot 16mb JPGs at 35mm and 50mm focal lengths with no real loss in quality. I'm impressed by Fuji at how they pull this off. Sure, it would have been nice to be able to shoot at 35 and 50 in raw, but Fuji's JPG's are damn good and I can still shoot raw at 28mm focal length. I also like the articulated touch screen. I use the touch screen only to move my focus point. Not to focus/shoot because the touch/focus/shoot is a bit slow in my opinion. I also use this camera at manual focus most often because it is faster that way. I prefocus at a certain distance, set the aperture to f8 and shutter speed to 1/125 or 1/250 and auto ISO. With the leaf shutter it is just to click away and no one notices the camera. Love it :)
I have never used a Ricoh GR so I can't compare them two. But the ergonomics of the X70 is good, in my opinion, and it feels even better/safer with a wrist strap. I also find that the camera is not small enough to fit into your jeans pockets, unless you have really baggy jeans with big pockets. The camera fits well in a jacket pocket though. But the camera feels good to hold in the hand so I just carry it in my hand all the time when I'm out shooting. And since the camera is so good looking I feel more handsome carrying it in my hand :P I also carry a small messenger bag so I can always put it in there if I want to.
I like this guy, he is a good speaker. Very articulate.
That picture of the garbage bin was trash!
Calgary should use this review to attract tourists, "Beautiful dead grass yellow, rich and vibrant concrete grey".
I'm already on the edge of my seat excited to see the city!
Don't ever quit reviewing guys. I love your reviews. Especially the beam of hope in an otherwise concrete and mundane life. You guys are poets!

Is it me or is the color grade for this video a little off? His skin tone looks really flat and yellow
All I noticed was Chris' shirt is the same color as dead Canadian grass.
+DavidSaganHD ive noticed that on like 90% of their videos, especially the ones shot on any sony
+DavidSaganHD it is normal... for Sony camera...
Thanks for sharing! I laughed so hard during the "old tar on the road" bit. I love how this camera's video specs weren't even worth Jordan's time to say how poor they are :)
+Chris Prouse True, but who in their right mind uses Fuji for video?
BDB3003 Who's Fuji? ;)
The guy @ 8:56 is my favourite
8:53 - best part hahaha. Great review!
"I'm gonna rob that man! Oh, it's just the x70. Nevermind."
hey chris whatsup? what would you rather? x70 or g7x ii? im into photography. thanks man. cheers!
Noel Go same question😄
Hey Guys. You did a very fair review of the X70. I have one myself, and you hit the nails right on. But, you sure glossed over McLeod Drive ... so much more depressing scenery that you missed...:-)
5:56 400%=200 iso??🤔 - 400 DRO = minimum 800 iso!

Hi. Nice Review as usual. But why did you completely miss to mention the ability of digital conversion to 35mm and 50mm??
That´s a very cool feature for a lot of situations I think.
Great review as always! Looks like the Rx100 is still the way to go in this body style.
I don't see how they compare
+paradoxdesigns 1" sensor vs aps-c ?
Great review. Fuji has hidden their version of snap in the manual focus settings. By which time you missed the shot.
+canturgan you can keep it in manual snap mode. I was trying to say that the x70 remembers the last snap setting you used. For me it's usually 1.5m.. LMAO this guy is funny

Modernist artists are not skilled, but they keep their mouths shut and let morons speculate about the "deep" meanings. Anyway, great video, as always! You guys are my favorite camera reviewers.
And some shit like that 😂
What is it with you guys? X70 isn’t marketed as a video camera!
Did you notice the white rabbits?!? (1:00-1:50 while on the bridge) They run around bottom left corner, enjoying life :)
+André Appel Yes!
Great job as always guys, except that I just can't understand fascination with "Fuji colors". i cant decide xt10 or x70 ...
How much did you pay for the fuji in that pawn shop?
How on earth did you guys record the audio on the busy street with moving cars without any noise from the cars?!?
+Teoh Yi Chie I think he's wearing a clip on mic
+Obed Rivera I've a lavalier mic too but I'm really impressed at how his was able to isolate the voice from the background noise that well.
+Teoh Yi Chie We used the Rode Filmmakers Kit for this video. The included Rode Lavalier mic rejects background noise extremely well. We do find the wireless units themselves a bit clunky and bulky, but the audio quality is top notch.

+TheCameraStoreTV Great advise!
TheCameraStoreTV Thanks for the info! Helpful!
Still sticking with my X100s, but the bride has offered to buy me the X70 for Christmas. I'm holding firm, but I may cave. Nice review. Thanks!
The light and sky at 8:45 looks gorgeous. Did you get any good shots?
+David Rothschild The whole time we were there I wishing I'd brought a second camera to shoot a timelapse...

Guys I like this new rate of releasing videos. I think you should sustain it forever 😆
Killer sharp image.... thank you, FS5 :)
I'm struggling with the 2+2 together bit (4 :P) ... all i can think of is, did you do it? :D
What's up with the "or some sh*t like that" two times in a row?

great video! but I stopped watching this as soon as noticing that there is no viewfinder.
which is better? this? or fujifilm xa3? thanks
Hi! I'd like to get a small compact camera that I can carry around all the time, for spontaneous street photography as well as some outdoor shots when I go hiking and whatnot. I got my eyes on the X70 and the X100T, as I really like the design, the clicking aperture ring and the shutter speed dial.

Do fuji X70 have sunny day mode for lcd? kinda like sony mirrorles, (sunny day mode bumb the lcd contras so we can kinda see in direct sunlihgt). thx

One more thing...anyone who wants this camera doesn't really care about video. I know I don't. I'll look to panasonic or sony for that.
Here is a reason NOT to buy this or any Fuji camera - the now infamous "Lens Control Error" that appears on several of their older products. Hi, 1st of all tnx so much for this great review! I'm a bit concerned about the filter adapter because this makes
everything way thicker - have you tried to screw a 49mm filter on the
lens the other way round? does AF still work?
The Ricoh has a built in ND filter. I find the Ricoh menu system to be logical and easy to navigate but an articulated touch screen would be useful.
nice but for this price I was expect 1,4 , 1.7 at least
on apcs today you start from $400 double zoom(18-55 +70-300 0r 55-200)+ case set on entry level
of canon and nikon. and a600 double zoom(16-50 +55-200) set for $600 from sony.
yeah I knew that it Fuji, but still it's hobby camera, that not make money. so
as
always in Fuji it overpriced and I believe that viewfinder will be
extremely expensive, as a wide angle adapter. so I guess we going close
to Canon 6d that FF

They probably didn't put an EVF or ND filter to prevent cannibalizing the X100 series
i used to have a GS645W , which was awesome, why couldn't they just make a X100Tw ??? with a 28 lens
Beautiful DEAD grass??? Lol 😂

I wanted one of these - however the price was prohibitive for me. I street shoot here in Chicago.
As of 2/2/2018 - you can’t find new ones in the US.

hello i need your adivce you think it's worth upgrading a x30 with the x70 ? will it be night and day difference ?
I love my X70. I'm a big guy with big hands, so it took some getting used to. However, now I have found a manual setup that works great for me. Good overview guys.
So its more like 4 shots per half-second. Is it too much to ask that a camera should be able to buffer for 1 second.
Wow...that's a busy road? Must be nice to be able to do a commute in under 5 minutes. Come out here to Los Angeles and I'll show you a busy road.
How abt low light performance???
Thanks for the review. Tough call. The there is the XT10 with 27mm pancake (I already own the lens)... Hm.
hell there any idea what will happen to x70 user when its get discontinued? i mean for firmware updates?
I was expecting the guy wearing the blue jacket seen at around 8:50 as one of the speakers for this review. XP

@jordandrake What lens are you shooting with on the Fs5. I have a two gh4s and thinking of upgrading to the fs5. The image looks great on this video, was it 4k downscaled to 1080 or just 10 bit 1080p. Thanks
+jason rae This was 10 bit 1080. I shot this episode on the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8.

I've noticed I never needed a indie filter I simply refuse distribution.
+MonkeyShaman Well done!
TheCameraStoreTV Thanks, it's nice when your hard work is appreciated.
4 shot burst???? Omg. What settings? RAW?
The X100S can shoot at 6fps in jpeg for basically an unlimited amount of time.
+Rediscover Film ...with 1% of shots focused accurately
+jampoid dude learn how to use it. It isn't constant AF. Either stop down for deeper DOF or only use on a static plane. Fuji is very clear that AF is not continuous in high speed continuous with the X100S.

But I think for some shots having a not bad (I don't mean blazing fast) focusing, it will be better. Maybe I can try the X100T.
+jampoid the X100S AF isn't bad. You should try the X-Pro1. With the X100S you need to make sure to do 2 things:
1) turn on "corrected AF point" in menu if you use the OVF
2) stick the the 9 inner Phase Detect AF points
Do you think Fuji will update this camera?
Using the focus ring like an FN button to command ISO is a really, really cool idea. Really hope they bring that to the X100T.
did you notice the white rabbits at 1:44???
Fuji is a better camera other than the grip for big hands is what your saying?
images looked pretty good. It is not quite x100s ?
Hey Chris and Jordan!
I would like to know if the digital tele feature on this camera is good.
Great review as always! Thanks for pointing out the downside of the leaf shutter...had no idea, but makes sense.
Can you start/stop video mode via the Touch screen ?
Are you guys going to review the new telephoto from Fuji?
I agree with you Chris - you guys definitely do a great job! Subscribed!
2:50 man I can just hear Eddie Vedder singing over this
Great review guys...can you pls post a top 10 compact cameras.
What would you recommend more this or the lx100?
Thank you for the great review! Chris, what was that weird bag that you were using?
Adobe is working with Fuji so Adobe can read Fuji raw files better. I guess in the next big update things should be fixed.
Touchscreen fine but this non x-t20 =)
Any news about the K-1 review in April? I look forward to it!
Nice video, love your content and happy to hear that you'll be posting regularly :)
