You have to wonder if traction was a crippling issue back then. Looking at those thin tires on the 500 pounds of torque 442. Imagine what it could do with today's 305 rubber in the rear.

Of the 68-72s, I def like the 68 best, but I think the 73-7 442s were the best looking. The only issue with them, is the same issue as all 70s cars … lack of power… which is a very easy fix, esp since most people would be doing some kind of restoration, incl an engine rebuild, anyway.
If I were to buy one, Id restore it cosmetically, but do a full-on mechanical restomod, as if the horsepower wars had never ended… more power, fuel injection, overdrive transmission, better suspension, better steering, bigger brakes, bigger rims/tires…

I had 3 at one time. 1967 was my first. Had a bench seat with a automatic on the column. 1969 was my 2nd. This one had a 4 speed. The clutch was so strong if I were at a long light or stuck in traffic I had to put it in neutral or my leg would shake and cramp. My favorite was my 1970 W30 convertible. Talk about power. Came with a Hurst duel gate shifter. I was sold during a test drive with the owner. While going 55 and shifting he put the pedal to the floor and it turned the wheels over. I was at the bank the next day. Loved that car.

Born out of the 442 came the HURST OLDS.
One of the best and fastest ever built.
445 CID it gave the HEMI and the 440 Dodges and Plymouths to look at as the HURST pulled away from them
My friend had one and the Dodges plus the Plymouth couldn't beat him on a street drag.
Not taking anything away from the Dodges nor the Plymouths, they were and still are great cars.

A '70 442 which had been hiberrating in a garage for twenty years , found me ten years back. It was a rust free dual gate, A/C, 8 track, complete with the Van Nuys tank sticker. I rebuilt the engine and transmission and always enjoy the torque monster. I purchased a 26K mile 1979 Hurst Olds some years back but never really appreciated the G body. Should have kept it, it was an original pristine survivor. I have always had a fondness for the Colonade body, the 1975 was perfection IMO. Thanks for posting.

My sister had a classmate in the graduating class of 1967 who was the daughter of a rather well to do man in our southwestern New York rural area. Gail Meyers was a very attractive 5’ 11” blonde.
For a graduation present unsurprisingly her parents bought her a car. She could chose any Buick or Olds she wanted. You guessed it an Olds , 442, white with red interior, convertible as I recall. She drove it for a very short time that fall then wisely stored it for the winter.
Gail was a bit different beautiful young lady in our area. She had a need for speed!!!! In the spring she brought out her basically new 442 with a few small changes. A set of Keystone wheels wrapped with an appropriate set of tires and a gear upgrade.
My big sister’s best friend was street racing one of the best looking cars and almost always winning!! and I got to wash it, a lot 🤔🤩
    Oh those good old days.

Correction. At the beginning of the video at the 17 second mark, it advertises a 1964 Oldsmobile 442 when in reality it’s a 1965 442. The 1964 model did not have that little notch behind the passenger and driver side doors.

I’ve always loved the cutlass. 442 on top of that body made it so much more droolable.
For years I’ve tried to nail down a favorite. I love the 72…. The 76 was a beautiful car (the cutlass with the waterfall grill may be as close to perfect aesthetically as any one car ever could… the smaller ones going into the 80’s was a beauty, and that 86 model was one of the sharpest cars of the day.
I briefly had a 79 with the turd 260 in it. It would boil the right rear… but once it hooked up it was slower than a Honda Civic. Was still damn sexy being black on red.

My parents had a ‘68 442 with the 400 rather than the 455 when I was very young. I remember seeing that car later at a local cruise-in a couple years after my parents sold it.
Later on, I bought a ‘68 GTO as my first car, and worked for a local Chevelle / El Camino resto parts shop, “Gold Eagle Classics” for a summer before college.
There’s something about those ‘68-‘72 semi-fastback A Bodies that just looks great.

I don't care what anybody says, the W30 twin scoop hood is absolutely the best looking hood ever made!, but my personal favorite year for the 442 is without question the 69, it has to be a 4 speed and not a Hurst, one of the sexiest body styles ever penned!

I have a 79 Cutlass Supreme with the 260 V8. I drove it in my late teens in college. I put headers on it but it was still pretty anemic but it did sound good. It also had a set of Goodyear Eagles on it that were "technically" to wide for it but never rubbed. The car could take a lot of corners it shouldn't have because of all that contact to the ground. It's not running now and sits in a barn. One of these days I'll maybe revisit that car and see what can be done to bring it back to life. Maybe make a fake 442 out of it, who knows.

The 442’s are pretty cool, but I think my favorite of the lineup are the 1969 W-30 442’s, those hood scoops make it look sinister especially in black (at least imo). My Uncle had the Hurst Version ( body like one in thumbnail) sitting in Grandpas yard for years. Mint Condition, Never covered and in Minnesota. From the Factory, it came with Strips, Not Racing Strips but 4 or more Candies Gold Strips over the whole car. Less than 20,000 on it. When I turned 16 back in 1990 I wanted to but it. "You are too Irresponsible and it's too much car for you and and and....".. Grandpa and Uncle sold it to my Cousin instead.
Fresh out of Auto Tech School for $500... Took him like 2-3 months to get it up and Running, then Gutted the interior to put Speakers in it. 4 months owning it, was next to a guy in a built out Mustang at a stop light.... Rolled it 4 or 5 times and wrapped it around a pole... And I am the one who was told was "too irresponsible"..

The last 442 was a 1990-1991 Cutlass Calais Quad 442. But of course Dodge had come out with the Spirit R/T which was a beast compared....And I may add that Shelby got his hands on that Dodge too..

Great !!! I can dig this.
Thumbnail nail example is perfect. The '68 was always my fave and if one looks close, we see the W30 badge. i sorta know these.
I bought a '69 Charger (383 Mag, 727, SureGrip) for $750 in '77. Yeah, not perfect but fun.
'80, i'm out for a spin. StopLight derby with an Old's 'Cutlass'.
About even then the passenger in the Olds starts laughing.
Grabs a gear and blows me away !
See the W30 badge on the trunk....Grab a Hot Rod mag i had devoted to muscle cars.
    This was a 455 ! I didn't stand a chance.

The 1970 Buick GSX 455 Stage 1 was the best GM usage of the 455 during the limited years it was produced!
That is the car that spawned the, " Not my old man's Buick" slogan, and as far as I'm concerned, Buick should do a retro version of the GSX, and the entire Skylark line to bring them back into direct competition with both Chevrolet & GM, and the Ford MUSTANG pony car/muscle cars we see retro every year!

Okay before I watch, here's what I heard. First 442 package stood for four barrel, four speed, dual exhaust and came equipped with a 340 ci V8 cause in 1964 when it was introduced that engine size was the largest displacement GM allowed in mid-size bodies. At Pontiac Delorean cheated and used a 383 ci in a Tempest mid-sized for the GTO package and was about to get reprimanded until the higher ups saw the sale figures for GTO. They then upped the displacement limit to 400 ci for all mid-sized. The limit stayed there till 1970.
