I would blame pilot training, because back then they were still flying with F-86 tactics (dogfighting) and also they didnt use airborne early warning and control systems so MiGs could cough them off guard 90% of the time and they couldnt use missiles if they didnt have clear IR signature of the aircraft engines (todays missiles are much better then those early AIM-9s). That notion that John Boyd sold you that aircraft always needs a gun (and needs to be highly maneuverable) is outdated to be used in todays beyond visual range fights. A-10 warthog could be replaced by any aircraft who can carry air to ground missiles and that GAU-8 is really inaccurate to be use for CAS (it could easily kill friendly's if spreed wasn't favorable and there is reason why even russians of all people stopped using them on MiG-27 and Su-25).

My dad was Army Special Operations Aviation & was a Experimental Diving Instructor for the Navy. 101st Airborne Sargent. Trained by NASA for several X craft. He built the first mobile decompression chamber for the Army, Way before the Navy ever dreamed about such a thing. Hes passed away now 🙏. He would of shot down that Damn Chinese Balloon.

I got about 200 hours in a combat flight sim with the harrier and it took a LOT of those hours to learn to use the VTOL without dieing. It must really take some skill and grit to try that in the real deal.

History repeats, the last breakthrough naval aircraft that didn’t have a gun was the F-4B Phantom. They hav to add one after the F-4 got into the Vietnam War. 1st there was a pod, then by the F-4E the Phantom got a gun. At least the USAF remembers, as the F-35A kept it’s gun.
The F-35B and C don't have internal guns that are part of the airframe on purpose There's no space inside the F-35B and C variants to fit an internal airframe gun because of all the other tech and whatnot inside The F-35A is the only variant that does have space for the gun inside
F-35B/C was designed for the gun pod to begin with because the cannon's ammo drum in the F-35A sits in the space where the lift fan is located in the F-35B, and the Navy omitted it on the F-35C to leverage the supply chain for the necessary gun pod for the F-35B. It's worth mentioning that the Navy never used guns on their F-4s - the gun pod was an Air Force solution.
Check out the testimonials of f-22 pilots that engage in simulated air to air combat. They never even get close to the f-35 before they get an indication that they just died. The f-22 has superior maneuverability, but it is technologically out matched by the f-35.
It always has been, my Dad armed Dauntless dive bomders in WW2. My younger cousin armed A10s in Afghanistan, they both complained about the long hours, detailed work even when you're half asleep, and all the lifting.

Actually the pod may not be the issue for stealth. Another issue was the concealed gun has the tendency to crack its platform when over fired. That often caused accuracy to wane on the cannon. Considering the range and the high maneuverability I don’t think the gatling pod causes as much trouble as we might think. Effectively no stealth aircraft is truly invisible, it will be seen regardless when in a tight combat situation especially with another stealth fighter but the added benefit of the gun platform not shaking to pieces when fired constantly against enemy targets is an added benefit that won’t be a huge cost when considering similarly sized armaments used by opposing forces. An upgrade to the gatling platform will easily fix the hidden cannon design issue but the pod may not be a major issue if properly designed.
I know they were talking about putting the A-10 to rest awhile back. Would this be a replacement? Being a multirole fighter it might make sense to do that but what's the level of protection compared to an A-10?
A-10 is slow and doesn't have stealth capabilities which it could be easily taken down by enemy sams (not talking about manpads). It won't do good in an air-to-air combat. Armor doesn't matter anymore this time of war. Let the A-10 rest, F-35 could do the job exactly what the A-10 can.

It's much more rational to send ordinance instead of risking the A-10 to be shot down by interceptors or SAMs. A-10 is just impractical in war these days. (Ukraine-Russia) Edit: A-10 can't protect itself, dogfighting is a nightmare to A-10 being slower than a WW2 propeller engine fighter and very not maneuverable which flares is its last hope, don't know if it has chaffs. A-10 is basically a slow low altitude bomber that won't do anything to a T72, T90 tanks, possible APC's but an ATGM like NLAW and Javelin are a better option. Can't imagine A-10 doing any good aside counter-terrorism which they don't have air superiority and SAMs except manpads.

@@ashhawk7489 I dont know much about this system but some gun pods actually have an advantage over fixed built in guns when it comes to ground attacking. Some pods have guns that can rotate along a pitch axis. The gun can be slaved to sensors like radar, laser, etc to track the target and automatically adjust pitch. This would let a pilot fly higher and faster over the target and not even need to lower his aircrafts nose as much or at all meaning he can drill the target and stay much safer than if he got low and slow and had to fly directly toward the target instead of just over it.
It's the same gun as the A model, but the A is internal and stealthier. The B and C have no internal gun thus this pod and it takes a stealth hit to carry it so on stealthy missions would be left behind. Not very many rounds in either model, so not a lot of shooting going on there anyway.

@@veidorje1681 Vibrations are not a problem. There's a reason why the guns are always slightly offset from the nose. It's even done in the A-10. The A-10 cannot out perform the F-35 in the CAS role as well. It is slow, low flying, and is easy prey for SPAAG and MANPADs. It's also notorious for having poor IFF systems and has had several instances of blue on blues (friendly fire). The only reason it was still in use in Afghanistan and Iraq by the US was because it's cheap and total air supremacy was achieved by Coalition forces. The enemy being fought didn't also have too much in terms of anti-air weapons. In a modern conflict, the A-10 would get shredded by SAMs, enemy fighters, and anti-aircraft fire. The days of dedicated CAS platforms flying in heavily contest airspace are long gone as shown by the Russo-Ukrainian War. In comparison to the A-10 in the CAS role, the F-35 can quickly get in, drop whatever munitions are required, get out undetected. In the case that it is needed to carry munitions on its external stores for CAS, it could still perform and evade most AA weapons by just flying high at 20,000 feet. At those altitudes, the only threat would Also, Pierre Sprey interview as a source? That guy is a moron. He was a part of the notorious "Fighter Mafia" in the 70s and 80s that advocated for focusing more on dogfighting capabilities and maneuverability instead of radar and missile technology. They believed that dogfighting would still be the most common way of engaging another fighter, and that radars and missiles were a waste of time. Thankfully, they failed to successfully achieve their goal (at least partially) as fighters today prioritize both instead of one over the other.

Not every mission they need stealth capabilities. For instance Afghanistan/Iraq type conflicts where anti air radar isn't as prevalent like Russia/China. Also, if they can use this platform for close air ground attack support, they can save a lot of money not having to build a new aircraft to perform these roles. With that said, I love the A10 but nothing ever lasts forever. One day the A10 will become an ancient piece of history sometime in 10-20 years.

It's meant for ground strike in uncontested airspace. Since there's nothing else certified for the central pylon, if you're not expecting to run into enemy SAM's or Fighters you might as well slap one on if supporting infantry.
Does America need this? Probably not, but many nations have all their eggs in the F-35's basket. It's a pod or you simply don't have a fighter with a gun. That said using a $41,986 per hour stealth fighter to fire 25mm rounds is admittedly pretty painful to watch. That's a sky wardens job.
The thing is outfitting it with all sorts of external pods, makes its radar cross section higher. For such an expensive aircraft, it takes away such an advantage. In my opinion a mixed fleet is necessary to eleviate wear and tear of such an expensive aircraft especially in situations where air superiority has been achieved.
These pods are designed to not have a big impact on RCS. Also, due to the F-35's great economy of scale, the cost of the flight hour has decreased per batch.

空対空ではステルス重視、支援攻撃ではポッド装着と使い分けができるのは便利ですね。日本のいずも級のB型でも検討して頂きたいです。南西諸島で使い道があるかも。

正確には日本の艦艇に「級」と「型」の定義がなされてないから別に問題では無いですよ。5500トン級と川内型等を引き合いに出して定義付ける考えもありましたが、外国の艦艇との整合性がとれないので一般的ではありません。
F35Bについても別にF35シリーズ3つがそれぞれ独立した飛行機ってわけでもないから、ある種和風な使い方としてB型ってのも訳わからないってことはないかな。一般的かどうかは別だけど。

Actually the pod may not be the issue for stealth. Another issue was the concealed gun has the tendency to crack its platform when over fired. That often caused accuracy to wane on the cannon. Considering the range and the high maneuverability I don’t think the gatling pod causes as much trouble as we might think. Effectively no stealth aircraft is truly invisible, it will be seen regardless when in a tight combat situation especially with another stealth fighter but the added benefit of the gun platform not shaking to pieces when fired constantly against enemy targets is an added benefit that won’t be a huge cost when considering similarly sized armaments used by opposing forces. An upgrade to the gatling platform will easily fix the hidden cannon design issue but the pod may not be a major issue if properly designed.
I know they were talking about putting the A-10 to rest awhile back. Would this be a replacement? Being a multirole fighter it might make sense to do that but what's the level of protection compared to an A-10?
A-10 is slow and doesn't have stealth capabilities which it could be easily taken down by enemy sams (not talking about manpads). It won't do good in an air-to-air combat. Armor doesn't matter anymore this time of war. Let the A-10 rest, F-35 could do the job exactly what the A-10 can.

@@cruisinguy6024 That's the reason why they chose F-35 over the A-10. It's much more rational to send ordinance instead of risking the A-10 to be shot down by interceptors or SAMs. A-10 is just impractical in war these days. (Ukraine-Russia)
Edit: A-10 can't protect itself, dogfighting is a nightmare to A-10 being slower than a WW2 propeller engine fighter and very not maneuverable which flares is its last hope, don't know if it has chaffs.
A-10 is basically a slow low altitude bomber that won't do anything to a T72, T90 tanks, possible APC's but an ATGM like NLAW and Javelin are a better option. Can't imagine A-10 doing any good aside counter-terrorism which they don't have air superiority and SAMs except manpads.
@@xenomorph9114You’re just making stuff up huh? The only US plane that can beat the A-10 in a dogfight is a F22 Raptor, that says a LOT about its maneuverability… It can also carry 9M Sidewinders which helps it defeat at least some close air enemies
an A-10 is 100% being shoot down in an active battlefield, why would you risk and try to withstand damage if you could just not recieve any damage at all with an F-35?

@@ashhawk7489 I dont know much about this system but some gun pods actually have an advantage over fixed built in guns when it comes to ground attacking. Some pods have guns that can rotate along a pitch axis. The gun can be slaved to sensors like radar, laser, etc to track the target and automatically adjust pitch. This would let a pilot fly higher and faster over the target and not even need to lower his aircrafts nose as much or at all meaning he can drill the target and stay much safer than if he got low and slow and had to fly directly toward the target instead of just over it.
It's the same gun as the A model, but the A is internal and stealthier. The B and C have no internal gun thus this pod and it takes a stealth hit to carry it so on stealthy missions would be left behind. Not very many rounds in either model, so not a lot of shooting going on there anyway.
when fired the internal gun makes the whole jet vibrate they should have gone for a single barrel gun they do their job well after all it does not take deluge of rounds to destroy an armored vehicle or else leave it to the A-10 which the F-35 will never replace I was glad to hear that the wart-hog would not be retired from service nothing can replace an A-10 : )

The F-35C has an internal gun. It's only the F-35B doesn't due to the VTOL lift fan taking up too much internal space.
@@veidorje1681 Vibrations are not a problem. There's a reason why the guns are always slightly offset from the nose. It's even done in the A-10. The A-10 cannot out perform the F-35 in the CAS role as well. It is slow, low flying, and is easy prey for SPAAG and MANPADs. It's also notorious for having poor IFF systems and has had several instances of blue on blues (friendly fire). The only reason it was still in use in Afghanistan and Iraq by the US was because it's cheap and total air supremacy was achieved by Coalition forces. The enemy being fought didn't also have too much in terms of anti-air weapons. In a modern conflict, the A-10 would get shredded by SAMs, enemy fighters, and anti-aircraft fire. The days of dedicated CAS platforms flying in heavily contest airspace are long gone as shown by the Russo-Ukrainian War. In comparison to the A-10 in the CAS role, the F-35 can quickly get in, drop whatever munitions are required, get out undetected. In the case that it is needed to carry munitions on its external stores for CAS, it could still perform and evade most AA weapons by just flying high at 20,000 feet. At those altitudes, the only threat would Also, Pierre Sprey interview as a source? That guy is a moron. He was a part of the notorious "Fighter Mafia" in the 70s and 80s that advocated for focusing more on dogfighting capabilities and maneuverability instead of radar and missile technology. They believed that dogfighting would still be the most common way of engaging another fighter, and that radars and missiles were a waste of time. Thankfully, they failed to successfully achieve their goal (at least partially) as fighters today prioritize both instead of one over the other.

@@veidorje1681 Agree, though attempts to replace the A-10 with the F-35 are still pressing even when it isn't even close to that capability. Need a real CAS replacement for the A-10 or maybe a rebuild as a Super A-10. F-35 is just a missile ship and those are expensive and limited in quantity.

Is the gun pod worth the aero/weight penalty and expensive to carry 200 rounds? Maybe if it was 800-1000 rounds.
Depends if they are using it for CAS it's already going to be moving slower than usaul to provide ground attack.

Not every mission they need stealth capabilities. For instance Afghanistan/Iraq type conflicts where anti air radar isn't as prevalent like Russia/China. Also, if they can use this platform for close air ground attack support, they can save a lot of money not having to build a new aircraft to perform these roles. With that said, I love the A10 but nothing ever lasts forever. One day the A10 will become an ancient piece of history sometime in 10-20 years.

It's meant for ground strike in uncontested airspace. Since there's nothing else certified for the central pylon, if you're not expecting to run into enemy SAM's or Fighters you might as well slap one on if supporting infantry.
Does America need this? Probably not, but many nations have all their eggs in the F-35's basket. It's a pod or you simply don't have a fighter with a gun. That said using a $41,986 per hour stealth fighter to fire 25mm rounds is admittedly pretty painful to watch.

F-35BとF-35Cは機内に機銃が無くて最初からステルス性を付与したガンポッドが対応との事でした。
F-35Aは機内に装備しています。
空軍と海軍の考え方の違いのようです。
もしくは、元が空軍機なので着艦用のフレーム強化やリフトファンなどの垂直離着陸機能で場所を取られて、機内に装備できるスペースが無かったのかも。

だからCが意外でした。
なぜかF-35AもGAU-22/A 25mm機関砲になっています。
そこの所がA-10の代わりも受け持たされた事情のようです。（20mmと30mmの間をとった？）
弾薬はAV-8BのGAU-12やＭ２ブラッドレイ・アメリカ艦船に多く搭載されている25mmブッシュマスターと同じなので供給は問題ないはずですが。

Yes, but it is designed to have a small impact.
The thing is outfitting it with all sorts of external pods, makes its radar cross section higher. For such an expensive aircraft, it takes away such an advantage. In my opinion a mixed fleet is necessary to eleviate wear and tear of such an expensive aircraft especially in situations where air superiority has been achieved.
These pods are designed to not have a big impact on RCS.
Also, due to the F-35's great economy of scale, the cost of the flight hour has decreased per batch.
