  • This outing was photographed with the Nikon Z6II and the Nikon 500mm Pf (Mostly) It is owl season and this is a quick reminder that the owls get a lot of pressure and that we should spot the signs when the owls are getting stressed out.

Ethics in photography are such a difficult issue to discuss without sounding like one is preaching. Well done, message delivered and received. Also, thank you for the amazing images gathered while respecting the owls.
We had a situation close to my home where a dozen photographers camped out under an owl for over 5 hours. One got tired of waiting for the owl to move and started to pound on the tree the owl was roosting in. Thankfully, our local law enforcement got involved and placed barriers around the area to keep photographers at a reasonable distance. Obviously, not all photographers take the time (or care) to understand their subjects.
Keep up the great work Josh.

I work 12 hour night shifts in a busy overwhelmed hospital as a Respiratory Therapist. I'm also a portrait & conceptual photographer... I have never shot wildlife, but love viewing wildlife photography. Been crazy busy at the hospital the last few months so no time for cathartic photography days when off.
However, thanks to you, when I get off a crazy shift and I'm feeling hollow or empty inside, I watch your videos instead of drinking a beer. Your work is beautiful and just watching your latest videos brings back some of my lost emotions and feelings and allows me to cry and feel whole again.
Got off this morning after a horrible night and feeling completely numb, this video of the grey owls was all I needed to watch and recover some feelings before going to bed.
Thank you so much for this video and your other videos!
I hope to be back in the studio and creating more art with my camera once things slow down.

Love the analogy of someone sleeping at the foot of your bed. Thank you Josh for using your platform to spread the good word about respecting owls. As someone who loves owls and tries to photograph them when I can, I have witnessed disappointing behavior exhibited by other photographers so seeing your message being spread to your audience gives me great joy. We don't have Great Gray's here in Kentucky. But we have other owls and I can say 100% an owl day is a great day. We have one old friend we've seen at the same spot back in the woods for the past 2 years. We protect that spot because we don't want to make him (or her) restless. It is a beautiful creature and makes my heart skip a beat when we see it. We rarely go looking for owls but we say "owls are where you find them". Yes, an "owl day" is always a good day.

Lol, your comment about the owl looking at you reminded me of a time I herd a loud thud against our back window. I got up to investigate and found a hawk sitting in the yard. So I grabbed my camera and to took a couple of pictures. The look that the hawk was giving me was something else. It was like, come on punk! I can take you no problem. Now get out here and lets dance. I figured it was probably not a good idea to provoke it. 😄😄😄 As always thank you for sharing!!

I was out yesterday at a local reservoir, while relocating my tripod mounted 600 mm to capture some ducks, an Bald eagle flew overhead. Had it not been for my second camera slung over my back I would have missed the few shots I captured of this beautiful bird in flight! Later I captured a Golden Eagle on a perch. What a great day! OK found your channel after watching your Bird Burger interview. Enjoyed this video - the story , the perspective, the message about being responsible sharing time with the owls. My wife and I shot Nikon stills for years. About 3-4 years ago we transitioned to video and now shoot Canon cinema cameras, while I still shoot some stills with R5 (we are on YT as Glatz Nature Productions). One thing you said on Bird Burger that really struck me: “getting better” for you is about “telling stories better.” So true! We are just learning the video craft and it’s super challenging. Looking forward to more of your content. Really like your style. Keep up the good work Josh!

You’ve inspired me and coincidentally my 6 year old has taken to bird spotting, so we’ve been out together. Today, whilst sitting waiting for the birds, camera and tripod at the ready, a robin came by. He flitted from one tree to the next, then totted up within a foot of my foot. Flew back to his tree, posed for me and then went on his way. A very pleasant lunchtime break, with a visit from the friendly local robin red breast.

Owls are tough to find, in the last month was lucky to get some shots of a Barred Owl only saw it 3 times, once perched on a dead tree stump and the other times saw something move in the corner of my eye and it was an owl in flight which luckily landed in an area where I could get a few shots. When they are stationary surrounded by trees they blend in so well, good luck finding them but when you do enjoy the moment it may be a long time before you see one again. Those GGO are amazing, our owls in Australia are very much nocturnal except when they’re flushed from their daylight roosts by other birds (we have many very aggressive and territorial birds that won’t tolerate a sleeping owl in their patch). Another wonderful video Josh.

Phenomenal Images of the OWLS! Thanks for spending all that time out in the cold so I can enjoy the images and video in my nice warm house here in the desert of Arizona! Photography and Hunting both take so much time in the field that most people don't realize the time investment to be successful. Thanks for your time, and respect for the birds.

I photograph in the Gulf Islands National Seashore system, try to stay on trails and keep my distance from the wildlife which is mostly birds. Thought I had missed the fledging of great horned owl chicks when I had been away for a few weeks. However, walking down a trail near their nest I looked over and it appeared momma owl had lined her two chicks up on a limb, with her in the background, just for me to photograph. I spent about three minutes taking their pictures and left. When I returned a half-hour later they were gone and I never saw them again. I don't know if they took pity on me and decided to give me a photo op or if gentle persistence paid off but it produced one of my favorite photos and wildlife photography experiences. Hopefully they feel the same way about me.

I will say, Josh, that Great Grey Owls really are one of my favourite birds to photograph and, as you say, the opportunity doesn’t come around that often so we constantly need to be respectful of their space. Hopefully, it will again because last summer, one of the areas I’ve gone to photograph these wonderful creatures was significantly burned from wildfires. Still unclear whether the habitat will support life for them. Expect to find out in a couple of months. Some great images and footage here. Thanks.
