- Katie and I go on a Hike together. We have a destination in mind. However, we are photographers first and hiking enthusiasts second. Will we make it to the destination? I know one thing. We will get some pretty pictures!

The title is awesome! I showed my wife. You have it good, you both move at the same pace. My wife is a fitness instructor and her idea of hiking is get to the top as fast you can, take one phone pic at the top, check the step counter, drink water and head down. Meanwhile, I am stopping at every brook, laying on my belly like Josh in the video. So now-a-days she teaches classes on Saturdays and I hike. Good stuff as always.
goodness. that is a stark difference in pace. Well at least you have Saturdays. Thanks Shadd, always appreciated. 😀
This is what photography should be......an experience, not a challenge. These folks have it right !
Thank you John, I appreciate it my friend.
If Katie keeps this up, Josh will be the one walking with a photographer and shooting B roll.
Well done you guys! Truly appreciate being able to see you enjoy your time together.
Truth! Thank you so much.
Bwahaha, Josh can be my film crew of one. No, I’m still getting used to him aiming that camera at me! LoL 😊❤️🌈🦋☮️🐿🦚🦉☀️

I was lured in laughing with recognition at the title....but stayed for the content and the meaningful words that describe why I chase outdoor documentary photography. You just spoke for thousands of us....
😄We are a different breed....us photographers.
"The slow blade penetrates the shield." (original "Dune" movie) So true, in so many ways. I'm with you... Take your time and drink it in!
Well said my friend
....Or ANY other types of photographers - UNLESS they're willing to assist you with your compositions and be patient with you at the same time.
I've found that having someone aside you (me) is that you're always worried about where that other person is...Is he/she safe? How far away are they? Are they getting shots in a better location? The questions you ask yourself seems endless thus robbing you of your time and enjoyment while trying to get that one great shot.
It's about time someone put out a video like this! Great job!!
You are so right about being worried about that other person. That is the biggest challenge. Thank you Will.
Your words are so true, never go hiking with a photographer, we stop at everything!
Right!? 🙂
@katiebirdnerd - those wrens photos were stunning ! Josh , yours were nice too 😁. You certainly hike with intent and purpose, just happens to be for bird photography, love it !
Katie, you are a nice addition to Josh's videos. You guys make a wonderful team. ✌🤟🖖
Katie is awesome!
Our philosophy aligns with yours. Nature sets our pace.
Yep! well said.
Josh and Katie… Thank you for this AWESOME video. I felt you were hiking with me. Everything you two do hiking/photographing made me feel that I was doing this ALL right👍🏻 I live in Montana and 15 minutes out my door is a world of Beautiful birds, flowers, rocks and landscapes.
Thank you again for the “Perfect” video👍🏻❤️
Thanks for tagging along Linda. Montana is so beautiful!
I love how you have split the videos, one from Josh's perspective and one from Katie's. This is good stuff, I really enjoyed the videos before, but now I think they're even better. Well done.
Thank you so much Laurie. I appreciate that. We’re having so much fun.
I agree, which is why I prefer to go alone. I can go at my own pace, stop, look and listen and decide on composition choices.
Alone is nice sometimes. Katie and I can go together and find ourselves alone. It is nice.
The Josh and Katie adventures are always eagerly anticipated. Those other hikers will sadly never see what you see and will never realize that unless they pick up a camera. Happy Easter if you roll that way.
Thank you Jim. So true. they just walk right by us and ask the same old questions...." what ya see?"
Sorry for that Jim there’s a lot of spam going around my channel lately. Unless it says my name on the side, don’t reply to it. It’s tons of spam. We apologize.
@@BayouJosh No need to apologize Josh. I get at least one of these a week. I always ignore them.
I can't help thinking those other hikers were there, not for the experience, but for a personal best. Get to the destination as quickly as possible and back in time for lunch.
Oh yeah, they were head down booking it.
2:02 AMAZING shot. Great video as always Josh. Keep it up! And 4:31! CHIPMUNK is SO CUTE
That last reply was spam. I am reporting those right now. I love chipmunks!!! 😊❤️🌈🦋🦋🦚🐿
Thank you so much my friend I sure do appreciate it.
Yep guys absolutely right… or invite someone who’s not a photographer they get bored and anxious to keep moving forward.
Exactly!
You bloody beautiful people! I make sure I don’t miss a video from y’all. Happy to see your wife has started to share her thoughts too. Lots of love from India.
Thank you so much!! You are too Kind. 🙂
Your videos just keep getting better and better! I’m with Katie, I don’t know how people can walk on by when birds are singing. And like Josh, my grand plans for hikes never pan out and I’m happier because of everything that I get to enjoy when I slow down and take it all in.
Right?! thanks as always Lisa.
I get it. I have been given the name of Lone Wolf by my family because I chose to drive alone and burn my own gas rather go with a family group in one vehicle to hiking areas. Maybe a 20 mile drive from the valley home to the Continental Divide trails. At the end of the hike, they load up and get back home as fast as possible. The Lone Wolf putts back down 20 miles of forest stopping at every view and to watch and shoot every critter. None of the others get that. I am on vacation at a special place I seldom see. The Lone Wolf will get back to home base much, much, later :) I hope they like what's on tv.
😄 I love it! Angelo the Lone Wolf!
This is exactly what our hiking trips look like 😁
It's like meditation.
Greetings from Germany
Very nice. Great to see Katie so involved and hearing her thoughts. You are a fine couple.
Glad you enjoyed it Edward. I am so glad Katie decided to get more involved. 😀
I totally agree.
Glad you never made it to the end of the trail. I would have missed so many wonderful scenes.
We had a blast! 😃
Josh and Katie, Leslie and I frequently say the journey is the destination. It is not about the length of the journey but the experiences along the way. If anything, we're probably even slower than you all. Every mushroom, bird, mammal, wildflower, bee, butterfly, snake, frog (Ok, you get the idea) is deserving of a closer look and appreciation. Some days we make 5 or 6 miles, some days we make 500-600 yards. Length of the journey doesn't matter.
Amen Jeff! We've just given up on getting anywhere.
My wife is just starting to get used to me going slower and stopping frequently for photos, video and b-roll. A hike that would take most people 20-30 minutes can take us 3-4 hours easily. It is a balance as she isn't a photographer, but I think she is coming around slowly 🙂
It’s shocking to some hikers how much is photographers dawdle
I used to wander off when Josh stopped in one place for a while. It never bothers me when he stops because I don't feel like I have to. I can keep going and then backtrack to him.
Your voices and images really help me crank out those feel good endorphins. Thank you for another wonderful video!
Glad we can help with those good feelings!
We were at the overlook you photographed at 7:30 into your video. Our 1 year old dog almost took a dive over the rocks into the canyon below. My wife’s strength and strong grip on his lead saved his life.
Holy moly!
Holy smokes! Nice save. Dogs are so silly sometimes. They get so excited.
No way on earth I could walk past those wrens! ^^ They are adorable!
I treasure the times I can get out with other people who can understand why we NEED to stop to look at some cool moss or something :) At the same time, I think it's awesome that different people can get totally different experiences and types of satisfaction out there. Thanks for another beautiful video! Cheers
Thank you so much Laku.
Quickly becoming one of my favorite UA-cam channels. The storytelling from both (Josh and Katie) perspectives is awesome.
so kind of you to say. thank you my friend.
Thank you so much, Garrett. That is very kind of you to say. I hope your day is awesome!
That first Red Breasted Nuthatch shot was tier 1 🔥 great stuff shared, can relate 🙌🏻
I love photographing those little dudes. Thank you Jeremy.
All my friends are trekkers. I do join them rather I have to join them. Its the bond. So when we trek , I look for birds, walk slow, and get bashed by them. But they are my biggest supporters. They even carry my camera when it gets tough for me. Last month we did a snow trek in a birding hotspot. Unfortunately we didn't encountered any bird due to snowfall. My friends carried my 3kg kit as I was affected by Altitude. They went ahead and reached destination. I arrived later. I got to see Alpine accentor bird and because my friends helped me , I was able to photograph the bird. So I say its not good for hikers to be with Bird photographer but its definitely good for us.
it sounds like you have a great group of friends. 🙂
You get it!!
So true and Katie's comments make a very nice video even better.
Thanks Brue. I am so Glad Katie has been more involved. she is a doll!
I agree. Great addition to the channel and nice to see it growing steadily.
Probably your best story yet! I love it because I can completely relate! Thank You both!
Well thank you my friend. I figured we can all relate to this one.
Katie, thanks for the Canyon Wren videos. In my youth I spent a lot of time in the desert and I loved to sit in the still dawn and listen to the wren calls echo off the canyon walls. Brings back wonderful memories.
The most beautiful call!
How wonderful!! Wrens are the cutest little singers. The rock wren was really getting into his singing too. I love how he extends his legs like he’s thrusting his whole body into his sing. It’s so adorable when they do that! Have a wonderful day! 😊🦋🌈❤️☮️🦚🐿🦉☀️
The only way to hike, taking th world in and capturing it along the way. Keep it going .
Agreed.
Another lovely meditation that doesn't suck. Neither does that 500mm PF on the Z9!
Thank you my friend.
I say never hike with those who can't see these beautiful creatures or let u enjoy... You'll always be in peace while taking photographs 😀
Well said.
Awesome video Josh and Katie. Sandy and I have gotta go find one of those adorable chipmunk's.
Those chipmunks are adorable!
Love it again Josh and Katie ! thanks again to share ... its so relaxing to watch ! and funny too
Our pleasure!
It's either a photography trip or a friends trip, it can never be both. If you go out with friends, enjoy time with friends because unless they are just as crazy about photos as yourself, they will make you miserable. I have given up on camera + friends.
That’s a good way to look at it. Pick one.
The best two watchable national geographic voices on the tube bar none! It will be exciting to hike with the silky swift 400 2.8
If it ever comes. 🤔 Thank you so much Dave.
@@BayouJosh im waiting 2. Gonna have to sell some stuff, thats for sure.
I think he should just cancel the order. What can it do that your current stuff can’t?
@@buttonlover86 i guess Josh will prove why the 400 is worth 14,980$ in the future. Luckily Nikon isnt very fast on shipping this lens even to NPS members so it may be by end of the year. Plenty of time to make that decision. Maybe then we will know if the trade is worth the sacrifice.
How many times can I comment with "great video." Well, I'm not sure but get used to it. Loved it.
How many times and ways can I say thank you? I appreciate it my brother.
Katiebird-- Thank you for your wonderful response about The River Runs through it! Movie was made in 1992 in Livingston,MT! My Brother-in-law taught Robert Redford how to fly-fish! Because of you, Katie I bought the movie and it brought back many memories of Johnny a world class fly-fisherman who has past away! THANK YOU-- Randy Bocksnick (MONTANA)
🙂
Oh yay! I’m so glad you liked it. I saw it in the theater when it first came out. Very sad but beautiful story. I am a mega fan of Robert Redford. I can’t believe it! That’s so awesome that he was taught by your BIL! Now I can say I know a guy who knows a guy that knows Robert Redford. I love it.
This is so wholesome!
Omg loved this video, too funny. Had to get my husband to watch it, as I am the one slowing us down all the time on our hikes to take pictures. He definitely had a chuckle! Most of the time he is fascinated at all the little things I spot to take pictures of. As a photographer your eyes are always looking for that little bird or how the colour or texture of the bark looks on a particular tree. Really a million different things…… so many fascinating things to discover if you just slow down to see them!
Hopefully he knows now that your not crazy! there are thousands of us out there clogging up the trails. 😉
AWESOME,, my kind of hike.
Thank you sir.
A GREAT Video! As you cited Buffet, the experience matters more than the milage!
Thank you my friend! Indeed.
Salut, you shared incredible upload~friend,
Thank you! Cheers!
OK! This is now my favorite of all your videos. I felt like I was there with you! First one Ive seen with Katie and both of you did a great job making me feel relaxed as I sipped on my morning coffee. Thank you so much for this wonderful production!!
Thank you so much!! We are glad you enjoyed it. 😀
Love the way your brain works in development of these videos. The story. The insightfulness. The message. Thank you Josh AND Katie. Your bringing something new to the photography world. Love that Katie is getting more involved. Thank you both for your time and effort. No small task putting together such quality content.
Our pleasure! we are glad to hear that you are enjoying them. thank you,
You're so good you and your wife. It' s like a dream when you are talking. The music is perfect. It is a real pleasure to listening both of you. Thank you. Keep the good work

being distracted by something that catches my eye & having to get a few shots is my lifelong story as well
sometimes I never make it to the end
It’s all about the images!. NAH, just kidding. It’s nice to take it all in.
@@BayouJosh Yes it is, cant wait for your next video, as always you two be safe
HA! So true.
😀
Love that both of you are speaking thro the video.
Beautiful pictures and good hiking:-)
Thank you Julius! We’re having a wonderful time.
Your appreciation for nature and photography is very inspiring! Thank you.
I appreciate you saying that. Thank you.
Just thought I would let you know that the most outstanding bird photos of incredibly rare species are found one mile from the end of the climb. Perhaps you can start at the top. Wonderful video.
Of course they are. 😄 Thank you my friend.
There is nothing wrong with stopping to appreciate the sights and sounds on the trail. Even when I hike without my camera, I often stop to savor the experience. You may never see the rock at the end of the trail, but the sights along the way most likely outshine it anyway.
Indeed. thank you
Thank you for taking me along in your hikes! It brings me more joy than you can imagine! This one actually brought me to tears!
Thank you so much for joining us Dusty. It is a wonderful hobby!
The new DREAM Team for us. Thank for the video.
Thank you so much Edmond.
As usual, great video. They are encouraging, motivating, captivating and relaxing. I can find technical videos all day long and I never feel satisfied or relaxed afterward. Again Thank You and have a Blessed Easter!
Mission accomplished. Relax. It's fun!
All the experiences and memories you gain whilst the “hikers” return to base saying they had a great time. Ask them what they saw, hmm, well errrr etc. you’re the ones who have gained so much, thanks for the video, Josh 👍🏼
So True Roger. Thanks brother.
Anything that gets people outdoors is awesome, but I do like our leisurely hikes best of all. We occasionally "book it." :) I hope you are having a wonderful day, Roger. :)
This video reminded of the line Charles Kuralt used to use to end his 60 Minutes segments: "I heard about a story just up ahead. I kinda hope I never get there." Stay safe !
I love that quote! I might have to steal that one from you! 😊❤️🌈🦋☮️🐿🦚
That’s interesting! I need to look that up. I love that quote.
I like your style and sense of humor. I know the feeling as we do that too - walk a bit and then stop to look at the surroundings. Have a great weekend!
Thank you my friend. Have a great weekend.
Just saw this video and immediately added it to my watch later. Can't wait to watch!
😀
Love it! My wife likes to walk but I like to photograph. She will gladly set off on a 5 mile hike, come back and find me about a quarter of a mile along the same path!!! What's the answer? Easy, - I gave her a camera!!!
😄 Smart man!
i feel yah, sometimes i tell myself not to take pictures untill i reach my return point..but usually i am hiking out in the dark...
That’s what we should do, start hiking in the dark. No distractions.
Every time I watch one of your video's it broadens my perspective and increases my imagination in thinking of possible compositions to look for when I get out and about. Thanks for another great video!
You are very Kind Craig. thank you sir.
Hmmm? You’ve been speaking with my wife, haven’t you? She’ll say it sucks to hike with me if she sees too much camera gear, usually assessed by the appearance of a longer lens…and try concealing a tripod…if she sees that, I’m toast. Therefore, we often do reach our destination coz we’re actually hiking. All good though. Even without the camera, it’s always good to be out…and you know if you don’t have your camera, you’re gonna see something special. 😆 Happy Easter guys and thanks as always.
Oh my. She's on to you. 🙂 Of course you'll see something amazing when you don't have the camera.
What a beautiful and wonderful trip. Everyone should slow down and learn to enjoy the world around them the way you two do. Would love to sit around a campfire chatting with you good folks.
We'd love to have you!
@@BayouJosh - I'm sure it would be wonderful, and I would if I could. But your lesson here is such a powerful one. It's not the destination that's important - it's the journey.
A campfire sounds so nice. With marshmallows. 😊❤️🌈🦋☮️🦚🐿🦉☀️
I feel so good and relaxed....
Thanks 🙏
😃
Sounds like a normal hike with my wife and I, she's into it now. We both decide that we get 1 life and it should be full of experiences and sometimes the unexpected journeys are the best.
Agree! It’s nice to go off the beaten path as often as possible! 😊❤️🌈🦋☮️🦚🐿
The issue of through hiking and photography is being on From Ansel Adams time. He used a horse...
The conclusion of most light/ultralight hikers, me included, is: take a small, light cam with one or two light lenses. One very wide, one doubles both as macro and distance, like the 105.
If u put your "daily goal", measured by time, place or distance, u have very limited time for photography.
As noted, photographers hourly rate decrease sharply. From say 2-2.5 miles per hour, to o.5 or o.75. So better plan by that.
I make a camp and go for "star hikes": short walks in several directions around, coming to same main spot every noon/ evening. Then you can explore, go slow, till u get it all. I drive day before, arriving mild or late afternoon to make camp in daylight with no rush, eat well, and get a good night rest. Then i start really early on the spot. U get an 06:30 surprised fox, rushing boars, or a wild cat Burst into hunt.
If u hike, hiking is the aim and photography is the side effect. If u go out shooting, its vis verse.
Josh, u noted rightly about the pack weight. 24-28 pound, that's about max. For daily trip i take less- including 3-6 liter of water for our conditions here demand it.
Keep on those lovely videos.
Well said, add video into that and it takes it to another lever. what you don't see is the other rig with all the microphones and tripod accessories. it's nits.
Excellent points. We usually carry way more water than we need just in case. 😊🦋🌈❤️☮️🐿🦚🦉🪶☀️
"The journey is the destination"
truth! 😉
Excellent production
Much appreciated!
Have you ever seen a better nurse than Scottie Pippen? There are so many gorgeous nutrients out there. It's simply stunning.
The basketball player? Our dog is named Pippen. 😊❤️🌈🦋☮️🐿🦚
😊
Amazing viedo quality, very sharp image and full of details, Beautiful, I really love it..
Thank you so much 😊
This a a style of video all it’s own. It definitely has its own identity, and it is very cool! The narrative and the sounds, especially the Wrens, is almost ‘ Zen like. ‘ I think this is a winning style/ format you should focus more on, no pun. Just my 2 $
Stay safe and Healthy and Happy Shooting! 👍👍👍✌🏻😁🇺🇸📷📷
thanks George. It is my favorite type of video to make.
Another fine video, it's never about the destination just enjoy the journey
Very true!
Another great video. Love the wren sections. They have such cool vocalizations.
Those wrens are fantastic
I really look forward to your videos! You and Katie are such excellent storytellers!
You’re very kind Patricia. Thank you so much.
Found that some hikers might as well be on track in a field. I used to do that... and you miss so much.
To be fair, its just a different way to enjoy being outside, but a amble of .5 mile gives a photographer, nature lover is an accomplishment.
Very true!
True! There have been many hikes where the focus was calorie burning. Occasionally, we both want one of those kinds of hikes for sure. Gotta keep those legs strong for mountain climbing.
Hi you two great video as always you will get to the end one day I'm sure, stay safe...
Thank you Tel. I seriously doubt it knowing us! 😀
Great to see you and Katie again this week. Love to have been able to come along with the two of you on another adventure camera in hand. Katie's segment is enjoyable again, it's nice to see things from her perspective as well. Have a Great week and we will see you both next week.
Thank you Rob. It has been such a treat to get Katie involved. she is a great story teller.
you're great. love the pics ,motion pics & narrative 💪
Thank you my friend.
Beautiful images and videos, a lot more crisp and beautiful than before :)
Many thanks Fel. trying out new editing techniques.
Well , what to say: I love you guys ❤️
Thank you my friend. I appreciate it
Such a beautiful video, message and time well spent with you guys. I love that wildlife photography has slowed me down. You have it bang on!
Thank you my friend. It certainly is a beautiful thing to just slow down and take it all in.
Sometimes my mind needs a break from the constant thinking and worrying. Our nature trips are typically very peaceful.
It's hard to photograph when moving at the speed of light! Another great video, Josh & Katie.
It really is! Thank you Rob!
Excellent photos and video..
Many thanks!
Great video, Bird Photography - yes, Documentary Photography - definitely. Those who set off on the “Trail” with purpose often miss the point of being out in Nature! I have often wondered why it takes me so long to do things in the Garden 🪴, I know why, I’m just like you? I enjoy what I see, it’s not a race! Keep well and stay safe. 👍🇬🇧
Gardening can be an all day job if you do it right! 😊🦋❤️🌈☮️🦚🐿🦉🎶🪶🦆
Not too sure about doing it right? get sidetracked with Bugs, Birds & Bees 🐝 and before you know it, the day has gone?
Keep well and stay safe, your Videos are very interesting and enjoyable👍🇬🇧
Thank you so much David. We’ve gone down the gardening rabbit hole. That really steals away a lot of your time. So fun though!
Photography is a lot like golf to me; you just can’t believe you didn’t get the shot. I always go back though. I just know I’ll nail it the next time.
Well said.
Hello Katie and Josh, what a great video. As you mentioned Life is a journey. Hikers rush on the trail and very often they don‘t look left and right of the trail. You are on a journey through nature to discover and to slow down. I don‘t believe it sucks to walk with you through nature. Thank you for this video, have a great weekend. Best regards from Germany 🇩🇪
so true my friend. thanks as always. have a great weekend.
That’s the life of almost any photographer! Excellent video!
It really is! Thank you Scotty!
Really like having Katie’s narration on the video and would love to join you on a hike sometime!
We have fun!
@@BayouJosh I assume the comment about me being a winner of something is a scam?
I took my wife with me once......she left me on the trail and went back to the car lol.
Never go hiking with a wildlife photographer lol.
Macro is something I'm getting more into. The colors shapes and textures are really interesting. Another great video man.
Thanks Kevin. Macro will really slow you down. I found myself spending hours in a half acre spot. so much to see when you look super close.
@@BayouJosh man you got that right. We rush for certain subjects, and neglect so many others. Cheers man!
Another gem! You two are an amazing team. The landscapes you explore are incredible.
Thank you so much. We feel luck to live here.
"We stop for everything!", there's your next bumper sticker... You may be slower on your hike, you might never get to your final destination before heading back, but you might enjoy your hike more than those that hustle their butts to get to the end, then head back, but you definitely have more captured moments in space time along the way compared to the other hikers. Your videos do have a different feel with Katie narrating as well as you, you both have different yet overlapping styles.
😆 That would be a great bumper sticker.
@@BayouJosh Don't put a camera icon on that bumper sticker though. You don't want to advertise that you're a photographer though, because you don't want your vehicle broken into when you're not in it, or people following you home to break in and steal your gear. You have to be cautious in this world.
