I am a retired master bus mechanic. If you didn't know MCI makes "double glaze" glass that will fit in the same frame, all you need is the glass and a thinner rubber piece that holds it in the frame. Takes about 30 mins. to swap out.
Something that will save you a lot of grief is to never allow food or grease to go down the sink. Scrape your plates into the trash and throw it out, if not eventually you will be pulling the plumbing apart to clean out the solidified grease and food that is built up and stuck in your pipes.
I so enjoy your videos. I have certain people I watch daily and what sets them apart all the others is that they sound like they are talking to me instead of giving the morning stock report. I have to say though that you guys are the best. I hope this is monstrous success for you guys. Thanks.
So was curious why not keep more food on board. I was raised with we always had a few months of food. Mostly can goods, but mom did canning too. I have a few months of food in bus already. Some so I don't have to go out for lunch since it's in a storage lot as I build it and don't have much room to store it where I'm living. A thought all the vitamins maybe making your urine crystallize more. I like what you've done with the windows and it's good to hear the problems. I have two that have broken seals both up front though. Entry door is bad. Will have to fix that one. Rest will stay, all are thermal pane glass and half are Escape hatches. And I like the look of it, sun may be a problem or not as I can use it. Keep up the good work!
Hi guys, I never know about the pee problem. A good present for a cat ( I bought my Godchild’s cat one ) is a flapping fish, you change it via USB and you can put catnip in it too. ❤❤
It was great to hear about what worked and what didn't. Your videos are truly inspirational. We're onto our second coach/motorhome conversion, and this one has the driver's bed bay under the floor. That's now what we call "The Pussy Parlour" and has the cat food and kitty litter tray. I installed a baby cam so we can see when either needs attention. We're travelling with a Golden Retriever, a blue Burmese and a Ragdoll. I sympathise with you, especially seeing the fur. The driver's seat in ours often looks like it's got a cashmere seat cover. Safe travels folks, and best wishes from Australia. I envy your cooler weather. Yesterday we got to 39°C (102°F) which ordinarily isn't an issue. The 90% humidity didn't help. And last night it only got down to 31°C (88°F).
ooh I like the baby cam in there. Sometimes they go nap on the second landing and then I can't see if they are in there. Might steal that idea from you!
Nice work, many of the things you mention are relative to my build also so thanks for the update, I'm also making my own wood counter top but I'm using Rimu a native NZ tree which is suited to our climate shifts from around -10 max in the South Island in the winter to around 36 in the summer but I am gluing & screwing 4 x 2 lengths together so I hope to avoid the cracking, I have also left the original windows but I'm using thermal drapes & have the original diesel bus heater and an additional log burner for the really cold nights (I can't handle being cold at night now I'm older) I couldn't get away with no toilet door, wifey put her foot down over that one but fortunately my design allows a slider along side the existing wall, when you think about it the issues you raise are really only what you would expect after any DIY build so great job well done.
So as a furniture / cabinet maker, the issue with the countertop is solid wood expands and contracts in the across the grain direction. To keep it from cracking you’ll need to have a secure screw down in the back like you did. Then the middle screws and front screws will require a slotted hole in the cabinet, a washer and a snugged screw but not tightened. This allows the counter to expand and contract across the grain without cracking.
@@Rehabit8 that’s a tough one, but you have to figure out a way to allow it to move. The sicca flex I think to some extent remains flexible. Maybe you could pull the screws out of the front portion of the countertop slot the hole and put them back in, but not tight just snug and see if that allows the countertop to move enough.
@@Rehabit8 here is a video that shows a way to attach the countertops and allow them to move. This video also shows the proper way to repair the cracks.
Your editing makes the story flow so smoothly. Well done. Thanks for not hiding the bad and ugly. The good always comes out to balance the whole story.
Loved the video, and understand all the pros and cons .But as from one bus guy to another you may try having those original windows tinted with limo tint before replacing them.Long store short we had a gospel quartet with a bus we traveled in,we converted to a private coach with big windows ,we had the same issue with the singal pane windows my dad consulted one of his friends and he told my dad to have them tinted with limo tint .He did and it fixed our issue. As far as expense that was cheaper than having the windows replaced.i would try it before spending the money for replacement windows.Good luck and have fun and be safe in all your journeys. 😊
Also, we kept our single pane school bus windows... They are by far my biggest regret as well. If I ever build another bus (I'd like to. Not sure my wife wants to go through another build) that would be the biggest difference.
Thank you for sharing this with all of us. Definitely helps me to be more prepared as to what can happen and plan for. We had similar problems with the sun cooking us in the travel trailer. We went to a window tint shop and had ceramic window film installed. The difference was night and day. We were so impressed with the heat difference we got on our tow vehicle too. Maybe something to look into. Hope it helps. Safe travels!
Yeah, we have tinting on them, which we will one day replace as I'm sure we can get stronger ceramic tinting. We used it on the skylight covers we made and were impressed with how they kept the heat out. We may do that this summer. In winter it has been nice to let the sunlight warm the bus ha ha!
Hi guys happy seeing you again sorry about the windows and other stuff you are having with your home hope you get everything fix soon I just love your cats and how they walk when you take them outside I have a cat also but she don't go outside until your next video stay blessed and safe as you continue your adventures
Feb 6, 2023. Video time stamp 21:00. YES. Some of us are caught inside our homes. Wishing spring would get here. Like today. Beautiful sunny day. BUT, 30 degrees only. Yes we watch you guys, and want to have spring like weather where we are. I Know. I have wanted spring to come in early Feb for 67 years. ?? Proably Not. Love your videos. 2 thumbs up.
The nice thing is you can get them two new windows anytime. We put in single pain rv windows because they were 1500 for all 9 windows and custom dual pane windows were $7000. we magnet covers over the ones in the sun and it helps alot, but our plan all along is to replace them a couple at a time over a few years.
I cannot believe it is 6 months already. It just shows how natural it feels for you to be out and visiting so many fascinating places. As time passes it will be interesting to follow you as you repair and upgrade the bus based on experience rather than theory. And all the time I admire how you have become more relaxed and healthier looking, it proves that you have made the right decision.
Time flies when you are having fun!!!! Oh wow, it's good to hear we look more relaxed and healthier. We feel it, but it's hard to see when you look at yourself everyday lol!
I love you guys bus. I followed the whole build process. I agree with the onboard Generator idea. I seen the Onan Model used on a couple of Bus builds. Hopefully we can find a good used one, when the time comes. We will not live full time, nor go with Solar. As of now, We're still in the beginning stages. happy , safe travels🥰
The bus has a lot of good points, I know you have the usual wear and tear. The folding bed is a great asset and the Kitchen area still looks as good as ever, I think one or two parts are not quite so good now. yes I agree that the old bus windows should be replaced to save you money in the long term. Don's studio wouldn't take much to tidy the wires away, the only part that I dont like is the wires above the door where you enter the bus. looking at that every day would make me want to do something about it. I love your adventures and I like the way you explain things, you always give enough details so we know exactly what you mean. Stay safe and I look forward to your videos
Thanks Barry! Yes, I've been just putting on my imaginary "blinders" with those wires in the front. lol I think we are starting to reach a point finally where we are recovering from the build and feeling like...okay, lets finish up the last few jobs.
Your opinions are highly valuable real life experience. You two are living the dream, The pee crystallizing can be solved by running hot water down it once a week,
Ya we had both windshields replaced. Cost ys nothing but they charged the insurance co. Seven thousand dollars! Needless to say our insurance would not renew our policy.
Hi Don & Mela, great 6 month review. I love your adventures. I wonder is there a way you can put in VA irreplaceable inline filter before the waste drains down? You may have thought of this one. Hope you figure this one out. It can be a stinky pain.
A filter wouldn’t help because it’s all liquid coming out of us, the liquid crystallizes as it sits in the drain pipe. We think it’s probably because we don’t have a straight shoot down to the waste tank. The curves and turns are probably were it sits and crystallizes
I think the “open door” bathroom would be EXTREMELY germs because the smells float in the house and get on all your items! I don’t think I could handle my clothes smelling like someone’s waste
I don’t think a roomba would work well in a tiny space. I can picture us tripping over it and stubbing toes 🤣 but our cordless Dyson is perfect for tiny spaces. I just have to remember to charge it lol
