As a Taiwanese viewer, I have to say this debate is extremely reductive. Please understand the biggest schism in Taiwanese politics is between the Democratic Progressive party(DPP) and KMT which is rooted from the in state/out of state divide within the Han Taiwanese. I think they tried to fit Taiwan in the traditional colonizer vs aboriginal population dynamic which is not the case at all.
It's always nice to get input frm ppl who are more personally knowledgeable. 👍🏻 Also, I've noticed that a lot of western leftists & tankies have a tendency to perceive, or reduce, all geopolitics in the kind of colonizer/indigenous way you describe - not realizing that these matters are almost always a lot more complex than that, & reality jst isn't that blk & white.

Calling it Han Chinese is not wrong though. In China they literally use the term 漢語 hanyu "Han Chinese (language)". The term is not used extensively in Taiwan. Now you could argue that Mandarin and Taiwanese are two different languages under the Sinitic branch but at the end of the day Sinitic and hanyu are still essentially the same thing. Just like the Korean language will be called different names if you ask a South Korean, North Korean, or overseas Korean.

As a Taiwanese viewer, I have to say this debate is extremely reductive. Please understand the biggest schism in Taiwanese politics is between the Democratic Progressive party(DPP) and KMT which is rooted from the in state/out of state divide within the Han Taiwanese. I think they tried to fit Taiwan in the traditional colonizer vs aboriginal population dynamic which is not the case at all.

Calling it Han Chinese is not wrong though. In China they literally use the term 漢語 hanyu "Han Chinese (language)". The term is not used extensively in Taiwan.
Now you could argue that Mandarin and Taiwanese are two different languages under the Sinitic branch but at the end of the day Sinitic and hanyu are still essentially the same thing. Just like the Korean language will be called different names if you ask a South Korean, North Korean, or overseas Korean.
