My mom went to cosmetology school in the late 80'. Since my little sister had "good" hair, I became the guinea pig. I used to get bullied for having a curl when it went out of style in school. Then one day she decided to give me a relaxer and all of my edges fell out. I spent the entire 5th grade having to wear a headband and a fro because she wouldn't do anything else with my hair to let it grow back out. Boys would snatch my headband off and run away with it! And how can i forget when she finally put the curl back in and in 7th grade she decided to try and hot comb my roots. My scalp was covered in sores and scabs and i had to be taken out of school for 2 weeks due to everyone seeing the scabs. Fast-forward, I've been natural with my curly 4b-4c hair since 2014. Hair was a nightmare for me growing up.

I grew up in China (both my parents are black and were working at the embassy there) and even all the way to Beijing Jherri curl made its way! My mom had it for about a year and then decided the upkeep was too time-consuming and dropped it. I still remember the smell and stains lol!! Lovely and very informative video. I actually got a jherri curl 3 days ago because i was so tired of natural hair and the stress of it. I opted for the dry jherri curl option. Yes you can do the wet or dry and i love it. No more stress. Maybe one day ill go back to natural but for now im loving it. I could never style my natural hair. Its always to frizzy or i do a bomb twist out and step outside and poof its tiny afro. I just couldnt deal with it no more. So im trying this out just to say i did it and so far so good.

I had a Jheri Curl back in the day. I didn’t keep it wet (I guess I missed that requirement!) and my hair looked like a perpetual wash-n-go. For me, the experience was the same as having a relaxer…except my hair was permanently curly as the outcome, instead of straight. By comparison, my natural hair texture (13 months post big chop) is basically the Jheri Curl without shrinkage and a tiny bit looser curl pattern. That said, no chemicals here! Thanks, but No Thanks! I’ll take my curl pattern in all it’s glory (shrinkage and all!). 🥰

I used to have a Wave Nouveau in high school and I didn’t have to constantly keep it wet. I actually wore my hair straight sometimes. You just can’t overdo it with the heat. I know people nowadays who have a WN and the products are sold in Sally’s. I have seen UA-cam videos with women straightening their hair who have a WN. I have been natural for a very long time but I would definitely get a WV over a relaxer if I was doing a chemical.
Jheri Curl is really a brand name. My mother went to cosmetology school in the 80s and what she was putting in white women’s hair were curly perms but not Jheri Curls.
BTW a lot of older WW I know get perms to create volume because otherwise their hair looks flat and lifeless.

I personally did not like Gina’s backstory at the time of “all the black female hair stylists were mean to me”. It felt like WW tears without much insight on her part of why stylists (and clients) might be hesitant to trust her. There were other interactions between her and the public that gave me a bad vibe (I can’t remember now) and ultimately I decided not to go through with it.

I am never going back to a chemical process, I thought I had tricky, difficult hair that would not grow. I am a newer natural who used to swear by the "creamy crack" and for the life of me I can't remember why I used to feel so strongly about that? Since going natural I have not used the words tricky or difficult and I have in just two years surpassed the longest length I was able to achieve with a relaxer and the health of my hair🤯 I'm never going back but I appreciate hair knowledge of all types... I had dreads for 20 years and many natural styles after that. I became tired of natural hair maintenance, then did weaves and wigs, but grew tired of that. Love my Gina Curl! I’ve had it for 4 years. Texture demarcation is not an issue because the hair doesn’t tangle as long as you wash at least 2x a week. I use the original salon Hair’s Talent. Thank you for this video. It is well done and no policing!

Thank you for being one of the few UA-camrs who actually took the time to research how it's different from a Jheri curl. I did my research itself when it first came out and the Japanese products she's using are really expensive. Plus Gina has years of experience doing it.
I got a Japanese straightener (basically the straight variation of the gina curl) and thought about the Gina Curl, but dealing with the two textures is too hard for me. I discovered texture releases and between that and braids/twists I'm good.

I've had a Gina curl twice the first time I went straight to Gina in Connecticut from Tennessee she did a very good job I paid $500 it was five years back cause my hair was very short but my hair did grow but it still thinned out but I cannot say it was her fault because I did put some color on it. But the second time I had it done it was a lady that they had trained and I don't think she was she knew what she was doing my hair was a hot mess it wasn't curled good she put too large rollers in my hair and didn't even ask me what size I wanted I didn't think I had to tell her because I never told Gina and my curls wear good also it did not last long I was not happy plus it's still thinned out even though I took very good care of my hair and followed instructions and got the right products they told me to get. So I have not got any Gina curls since and don't plan to👍🏾💯 even though my hair is very kinky and does take up alot of my time but I will just deal with it.👌🏽

My mom still does them at 71 for her clients that still want her to, even though she's retired since 55. My sister and I are both master cosmetologist as well. We have do curls periodically, and they aren't wet anymore! Gina is definitely using the same steps but seemingly minimized. However, get ya money, Gina. Check out Design Essentials, though.❤

I am not aware of any curl that requires constant moisturizing. I would choose a $65 Wave Neaveau everytime, it's versatile as well. It can be worn curly or straight and is pretty good as a wash and go. Plus it doesn't take nine hours, maybe three. I'd still like to see the justification to charge $500. All hair needs moisture especially if chemically treated.

Though I wouldn’t use it, I’m happy companies are looking for other options outside of sodium hydroxide and relaxers to cater to the people that are going to use hair texture altering chemicals anyway.

Pasty Gen X, here. Gina Curl sounds like the perms Mom made me get until my hair finally burned off. No need to keep it wet, just leave it for a few days.
Dear G-d, I HAAAAAAATED those stupid perms. No wonder I eventually shaved my head.

I got the Carefree Curl in the early 1990's when I was 14. I don't know if it was just my hair, but unless I kept spraying activator on it every few hours a day, I had a dry crunchy rat's nest, and it was embarrassing! I'll just stay natural, thanks!
