    In portuguese "encomendar" means roughly "to order", asking for a product to by it later. As when you come to a tailor and you have to order (encomendar) a suit for buying it when it's done. I don't know if this thinking is legitimate, but kinda makes sense. The encomiendero order (encomenda) tribute and the tribe has to somehow give it (except it won't get anything in return)

    What video follows this one? I would assume the next video would be about the Atlantic Slave Trade. I'm interested in the next discussion about the growth of the arbitrary racial hierarchy in the Americas.

    I recently took an awesome introduction to the details of this era. I read a lot of missionary writings and it was so eye-opening and telling... The Pueblo Revolt of the 1600s was a singularly remarkable event when deeply looked-at. What a large swath of land that is involved in this harrowing and evolutionary period of history.
    Sorry, what I mean to say is that, my local community college put together an unbelievably detailed class on this and it warms my heart to see more of it coming from Khan! You folks are awesome.

      Hi I know you write your comment 3 years ago but do you happen to remember where you found those missionary writings?

    • @utofbu
      @utofbu 3 роки тому +2

      Hey there! The writings were issued to me in PDFs if my memory serves me correctly. I know I archived them somewhere on my old comp. If I do happen to find them (after I transfer some hard drives to the new system), I will gladly share them if I am allowed to. I think a few were from Jstor and those would require mutual subscriptions (as Jstore is downright malicious to people that share their material). Let me get back to you, I will reply here when/if I recover them!

  • @noreaction1

    for the love of pronunciation, the emphasis is on the second to last syllable in "encomienda" and "encomenderos" and there is no emphasis on the second syllable at all

    i need help understanding this phrase "triibute in kind", it says in my book that the people can pay tribute in money or in kind. i tried googling the phrase but no definition for the term.

    • @maureendadivas5968
      @maureendadivas5968 Рік тому

      i know its late but i still wanna add for others to see. "tribute" is like the tax they're paying to the encomenderos. they can pay using cash or in kind, means they can pay using forced labor, food, or their harvest, or any material the encomenderos will allow.

    I think it's kind of your job as a historian to be neutral of all things (as a scientist in general), but not that it is very bad here.
    But when you're saying someone in timeperiod 'x' is a good dude surrounded by bad dudes, I also think you should compare them to the mentality of said timeperiod, and not ours. Especially when you're teaching.
    Sorry for sounding mean, I love your history lessons!

      @@princessnaipie Isn't that exactly the same the Aztecs were doing, only the spaniards didn't demand mass human sacrifice for religious reasons? The spaniards were excessively brutal, but to say they were worse than the Aztecs is taking it a bit far.

    • @indigenouspodcast2257
      @indigenouspodcast2257 3 роки тому +8

      @@erlint No, you’re taking it a bit too far. Aztecs didn’t go throughout the Americas enslaving people and brining intended diseases. Aztecs didn’t go to Spain and kidnap millions of Spaniards and bring them to Atzlan as slaves. Aztecs didn’t force natives to work in mines until they died. Aztecs didn’t bring in racial hierarchy systems. You should probably do some research before sounding foolish.

    Interesting that you don't point out that Bartolomé de las Casas became a Catholic priest. He also wasn't alone. How about Pedro de Córdoba, Antonio Montesino, and the whole Dominican order who excommunicated the Spanish for their treatment of the native peoples? Very selectively anti-Catholic.

    While this video was educational the brutality and human impact of this system was not expressed well. This was a brutal system of subjugation. Natives weren’t “protected” they were used and abused. The information is good but the tone is awful and even apologist at times on behalf of the Spaniards.
