I'm giving up on the Porsche 912 project

  • I bought this survivor Porsche 912 five months ago. I've worked on restoring the car to get it back on the road where it belongs. Countless hours and certainly some blood, sweat, and tears (from gas in my eyes lol). A huge part of this was to prove to myself that I could do a full restoration on my own. I've had plenty of garage wins over the past several years with air cooled Porsches. I haven't had the chance to restore a car that was sitting for such a long time. Unfortunately I won't be the only person to work on this thing. I have to get some help on this engine because I simply do not have any time left. More important things have come up in life and I need to switch my focus. I've got well over a thousand hours on this car and I'm proud of what I've been able to accomplish in a few months. I'd be lying if I didn't say this is disappointing to have to get some help. As always, thank you guys for watching, commenting, and sharing my little story. I appreciate you all.

Thanks for all the positive feedback on my project. Sharing this makes it a lot more special for a few reasons, I think. Let me try and add a little more context to this video. I bought this car for a few reasons, but one of them was to prove to myself that I'm a good enough to mechanic to restore a car start to finish (aside from paint and body). This was the perfect car for this little personal challenge. I wanted to be able to say, "I rebuilt this entire car". Getting help on the engine feels like I'm failing, in a way. With all that said, I'm happy I bought this car and excited to learn more about this engine.

You’ve done a lot. It’s still your project. Just a little bit of outsourcing.. don’t beat yourself up. A lot of guys (me included) could not have done what you have done. Looking forward to seeing it running. And congrats on the new baby 🎉🎉

I'm convinced anyone can do what I've done. The main issue if time. Thanks Simon! Appreciate it!

No need to feel let down. From watching your videos, you seem to have the skills to complete this project on your own. What you lack, is time. We can all relate. Like you say, getting to enjoy the car a bit sooner is also a positive. Congrats on the coming baby. 🤝 Another adventure waiting to begin.

The truth is you've done most of it. Getting help is also part of the process. In fact sharing is a good thing bro. Can't wait to see it on the road.

I have found that sometimes it's just a good idea to let an expert tackle a job, especially if you can learn from them. Keep it up, lovin the 912 project!

Definitely. I've learned from a few guys in the past by watching them do projects for me

I think you are making a very wise decision Michael, life has continued to move along and time is precious. I agree with some of your other viewers in that this is still your 912 restoration. No doubt about that. It is not uncommon at all to see engines sent out and often interiors as well. It will still be all accomplished per your desires and it's still your car! And I still want to see it fire up and you taking it on your first drive! I'll be waiting for it brother!

Congrats!! The 912 will still be there, hold on to it and it let it take the time it needs. 911/912 back seat is perfect for kids 😀

Haha I'm in the same position. Well, not the baby part but the deciding to get the car to someone more used to working on it. I feel disappointed but I'm looking forward to driving it.

No shame at all my brother in Christ. Matter of fact, I'm PROUD you're giving up in lieu of family priorities (and of course 1st is serving Christ). I know it's fun, but a car is just a car at the end of the day. Pick up when you can - and when you do, I'll be there to tune-in (God willing).
By the way, all you need is a pair of vintage wire frame type glasses resting on the bridge of your nose and I'd mistaken you for a true mechanic.. or maybe a scholarly type lol.
    You'll be in my prayers.

Dude- no shame in any of it. Get help- don’t be like me. I have a 912 that I’ve been trying to finish for a while. I’ve taken the car completely apart twice but then shortly after moved to another country (twice) and couldn’t take it. This would be the third time I take it apart- the funny thing now is that I have 2 kids now. Haha. So everything is a lot slower. Haha
The soles carbs are a little hard to get going but once they run they are better than Webers.

3x taking a car apart no kidding! Kids definitely slow it all down. Get that thing going man!

I understand your disappointment, but hey , you’ve done everything else on this car , and your choosing to not neglect your wife and new child , good call .
You’ll get to rebuild engines , but you only get this child ( and new mom ) as a new born once .
So go enjoy your family , get to drive it sooner , and study Harry Pellow so you can rebuild the engine on another car , maybe mine !
I live in the SF Bay Area and I’m going to buy a ‘68 Tangerine 912, it’s had two owners prior to the current one , and he runs a shop working on only Aircooled Porsches , and has cared for this baby for over 20 years so it should be healthy .
I look forward to seeing how things go for you , keep up the good work and good on you for sticking to your priorities. You will be glad you did .
    I’m a dad , and a Pediatrician first 30 years .
    Onward !!!
