American Idol can't produce something like this. This is called Art. There is no formula to make it/present it to the masses- but the smart ones know it when it comes around.
just discovered my all-time favorite Joni clip. It's as though she's playing on a picnic, no pretensions, just the purity of her words, her voice and her playing. Wonderful.
Everyone is talking about the amazing performance. I would also like to applaud her writing skills. She is a poet, singer, musician and painter as well. Joni is gem!
1:42 is my favorite part! Joni makes a mistake, cleans up in a flash, laughs about it silently to him, and moves on, back into her 4th of July painting. She’s surreal! Joni, I’m thankful that you were born.
There's also a humility in her performances. Her delivery communicates that the audience is more important to her than being noticed herself. I say that because Joni Mitchell gets a lot of heat for alleged arrogance, which seems really unfair to me.
I first heard Joni on a late night radio when I was 16, I'm nearly 70 now and I have been a fan all that time, she has grown and changed throughout the years but never been anything less than wonderful. Thanks Joni.
One of my proudest moments was listening to "For the Roses" at age 15 (having never heard of Joni), and just KNOWING that this woman was for real, a rare talent, and a genius. I'm 32 now, and I've heard every fucking songs she has done, and there literally isn't a bad one. She rivals (if not surpasses) Dylan in lyric writing, and competes with opera when it comes to emotional impact. One of the all time greats, in this writers opinion.
Once in awhile, in a big blue moon, there comes an artist like this. Her words become paintings, the paintings sing and it all comes together with some of the finest music of our time. Joni Mitchell is a treasure of heart, soul and electrifying artistry.
It is so wonderful to read so many lovely comments because one of the things Joni did for me as a teenager made me know I was not alone in the way I felt or looked at the world and now I am 59, so I have been a devoted fan of all of her work for 45 years and I see others feel the same way. This is a magical piece and thank you for posting it. Although some said it was pretentious when she edited W.B. Yeat's poem, The Second Coming or Slouching Toward Bethlehem, on the same disc, it too is one of my faves in this collection. Get well Joni and if you can't do may you have peace. I will always love this human being and the art she produces.
.... oh lord, just get her beautiful smile and simple joy , her unguarded generosity of spirit at 1.46 - she just floors me! She's like that river and the bright day around her - an extension of it all - just simple, shining flowing joy ...........
This might be the most courageous, beautiful, flowing, multi-dimensional solo performance I have ever seen in any genre. Look at how bold and completely unstoppable Joni is. You can't stop her; you can't mess with that energy, and it has something to tell us. Seertrulth, you got that right. No more needs to be said but to listen carefully, young and old. Crazy, crazy stuff.
Even in this, unembelished, impromptu performance, she projects an authority an honest sense of a moment in her life that might, just might resonate with other lives. Bit it doesn't matter if it's a truth for us or not. What matters is it's a song from the heart, about a moment in the heart.
I was just thinking...after deplaning, fade to black-ing...this would be a beautiful, gentle, soothing world to awaken into (prelude, to whatever is next), Joni Mitchell, sitting by a river, playing you a song, a smile on her face...for the Night Ride Home.
This is probably the best video of Joni singing I've ever seen. You feel as if you are sitting there on the river bank with her listening to her play. I wish there were more videos of her singing her music like this one!
Joni Mitchell is such an inspiration. She never asked for any one to pay attention to her like "artists" do nowadays, she just gave her heart and soul with her music and people loved her for loving what she did. I hope eventually more musicians will be like her. You go Joni!
she is something else with that guitar playing style of hers...enough to drive any acoustic guitarist mad, I mean those harmonies, syncopation and that flowing rhythm...incredibly original
Joni is unique. Absolutely unmistakeably original. Great voice. Great guitar. Great composer and performer. What else needs to be said about Joni ? Oh, yes. Very attractive person too.
Damn! I love it! Wish I was sitting there with her - what a beautiful person! This kind of authenticity is nearly absent in today's music. I love ya, Joni!
Joni has been in my blood like holy wine for 45 years. Whenever depressed or sad, up came her music both to cheer and understand me. What a lifetime gift to have.
I've known that for many years now. What amazes me is the timelessness. I know that many of you are younger than me, but you still see the intrinsic beauty. Is that what makes it timeless?
Joni can do more with a simple acoustic guitar (her tunings!) and the outdoors than anyone else could dream of! She is so eerily, beautifully and so uniquely talented. Such a treasure. Breaks my heart with her beauty every time.
I confirm. A very talented singer songwriter and composer. Great musician. Joni Mitchell has known all her life stand straight and be one of my favourite musician.
Simply wonderful. No tricky production, backing singers, backing musicians, overdubs, or various takes pieced together in a studio. Now THAT is talent.
It's been forever since I've seen Joni in concert...back when she did the Miles of Aisles recording...I miss her. Watching this, I was surprised when a tear rolled down my cheek and I could hardly see the screen. It must have been a happier time.
...yeah agreed...she certainly is great......and shes been doing this sort of thing for years...she just literally blows the rest away... ...what a lady !
I was just wondering, what will Joni do, when she is going to sing the lyrics "I love the man beside me" in this situation: and you can hear and see a very gentle laugh-smile that coresponds with the moment :) As for the whole performance: WOW, loved it.
I just found about Joni yesterday while listening to internet radio and " a case of you" came on. Now I wonder how I could have overlooked her all my life ( I'm 35 while I write this).
Joni Mitchell and her songs are a gift for my soul. No one plays and composed like her! I've listen this song so many nights when I was driving at night... Joni you're an Angel We love you! Chris
This is surely Joni's best song. What an evocative piece of melody and lyric! I love the subtle swoops of her voice and the lovely ambiguous open chording. What a joy to hear her sing after a bad day.
Again, well said. She is a gift from above (whatever/wherever that may be). True music flows from the spirit within, there is nothing deliberate about it-as we see here. Even "mistakes" while playing are beautiful and part of the experience. Pure benevolence.
Such an easy, serene performance. Look how she closes her eyes and just imerses herself in her music. She just could sit there and strum that guitar all day.
I always loved Joni. She is the best female artist on the planet. Her songs have depth, emotion, and true grit. She is truly one of a kind. One of my favorite songs by her is Cold Blue Steel. It's so nice to hear her today. Her voice has matured and I think that her best work is yet to come. Topics like world peace, war, genocide, peace, and even love, love of self, eachother, friends, the earth, and even God are all still very relevent. God Bless.
Who knew she could keep blossoming over the span of more than 4 decades, ever more beautiful. Thanks for sharing your amazing gifts with us. I remain in awe.
So much talent wrapped up in one person. She is complex, bright, artistic, strong. Just the way I like my women. Well, my woman of 33 years in December! I gave her the "Blue" album in college, and we connected. Thanks Joni.
Ladies & Gentlemen, this talent is overwhelming! Joni Mitchell is the definition of a treasure! Here, in my home, alone, just listening to this performance, she has touched me deeply & brought tears to my eyes. I am blessed to have had the experience! Thank you henhenstoll & especially Joni!

If I'd been that guy,my heart would have nearly exploded in my chest.
Didn't she write this about Larry Klein before they broke up? Who knows....
just discovered my all-time favorite Joni clip. It's as though she's playing on a picnic, no pretensions, just the purity of her words, her voice and her playing. Wonderful.
Joni has been the soundtrack of most of my adult life.
Me, too!
Brings me to tears every time. So much love & life history there.
Absolutely. 4th of July 2023 and Joni brought me here/hear🎼🇺🇲🌏🌏🇺🇲🎼❤🙏🤍🙏💙
no pitch correction, second takes, no sequencers, no pro tools or any other demonic electronics. Just clear vision leading to perfection.
She might might be the peak of evolution in songwriting.
She is so full of music. Love her so much
Everyone is talking about the amazing performance.
It is like homing in on the most striking painting in the gallery, only for it to come alive, and sing to you.
There's also a humility in her performances. Her delivery communicates that the audience is more important to her than being noticed herself. I say that because Joni Mitchell gets a lot of heat for alleged arrogance, which seems really unfair to me.

Absolutely surpasses Dylan in every way
Definitely surpasses Dylan 🌊

never heard an artist do such good job of a great sog in such a minimal setting
This might be the most courageous, beautiful, flowing, multi-dimensional solo performance I have ever seen in any genre.

In spite of the abrupt end and one tiny clam, I’m convinced this is the best recorded version of this song. I love it so much.
Well,i'm a 57 year old male and she can still make me cry with her lyrics so for all her critics - GET A LIFE !!!
This is probably the best video of Joni singing I've ever seen. You feel as if you are sitting there on the river bank with her listening to her play. I wish there were more videos of her singing her music like this one!
So beautiful and unabashedly down to earth. Brought me to tears...for some reason.
It's just the effect Joni has on anyone with a pulse.
same
i always come back to this page from time to time, its like medicine for the soul
Joni Mitchell is such an inspiration. She never asked for any one to pay attention to her like "artists" do nowadays, she just gave her heart and soul with her music and people loved her for loving what she did. I hope eventually more musicians will be like her. You go Joni!
I been trying for so many years to define the magic Joni shares with my heart. But the words never tell and I'm brought to tears again.
The magic of sheer genius.
Such beauty in her voice, melody and guitar.. perfection!
she is something else with that guitar playing style of hers...enough to drive any acoustic guitarist mad, I mean those harmonies, syncopation and that flowing rhythm...incredibly original
Superb!
Just goes to show that a real artist does not need any fancy production.
A real treat.
Love ya, Joan!
Stunning. The musical muse of my life.
Joni is unique. Absolutely unmistakeably original. Great voice. Great guitar. Great composer and performer. What else needs to be said about Joni ? Oh, yes. Very attractive person too.

Joni has been in my blood like holy wine for 45 years. Whenever depressed or sad, up came her music both to cheer and understand me. What a lifetime gift to have.
Joni is the best female artist ever!!! No one writes lyrics like this. She is amazing.
Have a good long look, people. There will never be another Joni Mitchell on this blue planet.
Even more incredible a performer than when recorded, which is saying a lot. Her voice is liquid gold
I've known that for many years now. What amazes me is the timelessness. I know that many of you are younger than me, but you still see the intrinsic beauty. Is that what makes it timeless?
