  • We were just a silly Public Access show on local cable in Covina, California. Through a miracle, (we just asked) we were granted an interview with The great Joni Mitchell in 1989.
Up till now, these have only been seen by the few people who watched our cable show and then a few friends. (A total of maybe a couple hundred people.)
This is unedited, no smooth reversal shots or flowing questions. It is what it is, a conversation with Joni. This is part 1 of 3. See parts 2 and 3. Basically the last part is already posted. Produced by Marty Getz, Interviewer: Jeff Plummer, Camera: Steve Rhoades. Copyright mrgetz

What comes across here (to me) is that Joni senses how nervous the interviewer is and she reacts to it with kindness and generosity. And, at the same time, it seems to relax her, and allows her to riff on art and music in a very cool way.

Bravo to the "dumb little show in Covina" for requesting and getting the interview, and to the interviewer for having the class to not get in the way of the artist.

Sometimes I hope that the more I hear Joni speak, the more i absorb her intellectual way of speaking, such wit and a way with words. This is why she’s an amazing artist.

i worked with joni in london during the promo for dog eat dog in 1985, the only time i was nervous/starstruck during 20+ years in the music business - she was full of grace and had incredible presence

Interpreting her music and her arts, and later the videos has lent some understanding of her. These interviews allow the connections of what could seem to be disparate venues into the whole genius that is Joni. I'm so glad to enjoy the many parts.

Joni's voice is so mellifluous. I could listen to her talk for hours just to hear the sound, the overall tone of her voice. Having grown up in Michigan, I always loved the Canadian accent anyway, but Joni's light and brightness adds something extra to it.

I will defend Jeff to the death, he was thrown at this with very little experience, which does, in fact show. But we were a dumb little show in Covina getting a surprise "YES" to an interview we requested. I will always think of this as gold. Jeff might have been nervous, but it didn't hinder Joni at all, because she spoke interesting stuff. Sorry, protective I know.

I think Jeff was appropriate, respectful and right on topic; very important to Mitchell who does not like interviews. I'd rather see this interview than any of the usual insensitive garbage that passes for interviews on the networks. thumbs up!!!

Marty Getz I'm surprised at the need for a defense because he gets a great interview from Joni Mitchell, and she clearly liked his questions and enjoyed answering them.

You can tell how deeply Joni's dedicated herself to literal arts even just by the way she talks casually. In today's awkward music we don't get that exquisite vocabulary in an abundant scale, and some are stupid enough to criticize a delicate selection of lyrics for being contrarian, which I really feel sad about, despite the fact that occasionally they do have a valid point, when it comes to those people not knowing how to properly word but tending to pretend. But Joni's really a rare great lyricsmith and her work is poetic.

Oh, straight out. . . I am as gay as gay can be. But I certainly without any hesitation can see and hear just how so many men found her so captivating. I've loved her music since I was far too young to even know her name. I bet she is a truly incredible person to know and share conversation with. You rarely encounter people who are so dedicated to their art (in the forms that resonate with them) and who are able to express themselves easily about the things they think about. There is no pretension, just authenticity, and that too is so very rare. I only wish today's generation recognized just how valuable she is and has been to music, and the inclusion of women within the industry.

I agree. By the way, not on subject, I consider Covina to be my hometown because although we lived in various places in California, I still consider Covina to be my hometown. As for Joni, she’s phenomenal and I e remained a fan since her beginnings and throughout. Only some of her 80’s music is hard for me to get into because I loved her lyrics, of course, but the musical style is just not my favorite. I so love everything up to Don Juan’s Restless Daughter and then I kinda cruise through a few more. I soo love Mingus. Thank you, Joni for sharing your valuable time here. It’s always so wonderful and special to hear you speak.

Covina is a small city out in sort of the outskirts of Los Angeles, slightly north-east from Downtown LA. I just wouldn't think Joni would go to of all places, unexciting, Covina. I mean, its a nice city, but its Joni... in Covina? Hope Mr. Getz isn't offended... its just rather odd an funny, its as if Joni was oh I don't know... also happened to one day also be in... Cudahay or... Montecito Heights :^D
