She has the voice of a young lady, so does her soul 🌹 My native language comes from Latin and she knows about my etymology more than me. Thanks Ms. Gill
Hi, just took some time to analyze the etymology of the Latin words on the board: HUMAN: from latin "humanus" meaning "concerning man" (as opposed to concerning gods); ANIMAL: from latin "animale" meaning "living, breathing being"; DENTAL: from latin "dens" meaning "tooth"; DECIMAL: from latin "decimus" meaning "tenth"; DIGITAL: from latin "digitus" meaning "finger, toe"; FACTORY: from latin "factor" meaning "doer, maker"; LIBRARY: from latin "liber" meaning "book, paper"; MANUAL: from latin "manualis" meaning "belonging to the hand, something that can be held"; LUNAR: fom latin "luna" meaning "moon"; SOLAR: from latin "sol" meaning "sun"; MILITARY: from latin "miles" meanins "soldier"; SCIENCE: from latin "scientia" meaning "knowledge"; STATION: from latin "stationem" meaning "outpost, sentinel, port".
Indeed, thank you for taking the time! :) Just one note, though. The Latin word for "animal" is actually "animal", without the "e", and the basic form for "station" is actually "statio", as "stationem" is a different grammatical form, belonging to a case called "Accusative".
It's fun isn't it. Have a look at the Germanic stems as well. North of the Tees-Ex Line, we use the Norse word for child often. The are also words like Stone, Kirk, Haven and Mark - i.e. the Welsh Marches.

This is such an enlightening and easy to follow story told by my favourite teacher Gill. With this video, I have learnt the History of English in 21 minutes, as compared with two weeks reading a 222-page book called "The Story of English" written by Philip Gooden (Quercus Press) in 2009. Very well done, Gill. And a big thank you.

Hello Dear Thanks a lot for this fantastic perfectly explained lesson ; The topic may sound a little boring for a youngster but you made it so light and enjoyable in addition your pronunciation is so clear that I understand 100% of your speaking and considering that I’m just a B2 level asl it is great . At this point I question myself why other native speakers don’t speak like you do . Thanks a lot again. Nico
As a native spanish speaker it's such a pleasure to learn from this remarkable woman. Thank you very much. (i would like to add one word.... chocolate!!!)
She's such a humble teacher. I wish those teachers who always 'correct' students pronunciation (British pronunciation) to American pronunciation 😁 could see this channel.
I reckon it's got to do more with an accent issue. I haven't ever personally heard a native speaker correcting someone for their accent. I've heard them trying to convey meaning.
In northern Ireland we have a very odd accent and speak as fast as the Scots. We can usually understand any accent but at times we get someone from Scotland or Wales who can talk way too fast. The English people talk too slow.
Great teaching and narration. I got lots of knowledge from you. You re such a great English teacher. Keep on doing good jobs! From a Thai English teacher who loves linguistics
Thanks a lot for every class . I really like them. I'm from Mexico City . I'm an English teacher in my country, and these perfect classes help and improve my knowns. Thank you very much !
That is correct. And the Saxon tribes that migrated to England, were actually living in the north of Germany too. Nowadays, parts of that region now form the German state "Lower Saxony". Not to be confused with the modern German state called Saxony which is located in a different part of the country and did not exist until many centuries later. However, Anglia is still the name of a region in the Schleswig part of the northermost state of Germany "Schleswig-Holstein". The "Lower German" dialects, still spoken by some in the northern parts, have a lot of similarities with Dutch/Flemish and the Germanic parts of the English language.
Frisians and Jutes also contributed to English. I suppose she covered Frisian when she mentioned the “low countries” (Flanders in this case). Jutes were very likely from modern Denmark, however. Hence, Jutland peninsula etc.
Aye, the earlier name of Engand was Albion, Scotland was Alba, Irish Albain and Wales Yr Albain. Britain came from the Roman Britannia and before that Pretannia from the Greek name for the isle
I don't know how to thank you,dear teacher Gill, for the very interesting,excellent history about the english language . I knew something about it,but now all is clear .I studied latin language when I was a boy,at the middle school ,in the years 1950-1955 and I liked to study that language a lot,because,as you know, there are not determinative or indeterminative articles used in latin language .We learned how to use the endings (desinenza in italiano)of the words to understand well their meanings . That way to study latin, helped all of us (students) to learn the italian grammar .If we know well the latin language and its logical analysis,it will be so easy to learn correctly the italian language also.My best regards.
Dear Gill, you're incredibly lovely and adorable! Hi, just took some time to analyze the etymology of the Latin words on the board:
HUMAN: from latin "humanus" meaning "concerning man" (as opposed to concerning gods);
ANIMAL: from latin "animale" meaning "living, breathing being";
DENTAL: from latin "dens" meaning "tooth";
DECIMAL: from latin "decimus" meaning "tenth";
DIGITAL: from latin "digitus" meaning "finger, toe";
FACTORY: from latin "factor" meaning "doer, maker";
LIBRARY: from latin "liber" meaning "book, paper";
MANUAL: from latin "manualis" meaning "belonging to the hand, something that can be held";
LUNAR: fom latin "luna" meaning "moon";
SOLAR: from latin "sol" meaning "sun";
MILITARY: from latin "miles" meanins "soldier";
SCIENCE: from latin "scientia" meaning "knowledge";
STATION: from latin "stationem" meaning "outpost, sentinel, port".
grazie dell'elenco ma si capiva anche prima (I speak italiano)
Indeed, thank you for taking the time! :) Just one note, though. The Latin word for "animal" is actually "animal", without the "e", and the basic form for "station" is actually "statio", as "stationem" is a different grammatical form, belonging to a case called "Accusative".

She speaks slowly and clear. I've noticed that teachers tend to speak slower.
language is like a living creature, it's not static ... it rather grows , gives and takes, some cells die in it and some new cells are being born .
that's what a "LIVING ' creature does !

Conditions / Doğal koşullar ve şartlar.
(eğer-eser)> EĞER-ISE = (EVEN-IF)
(su AKAR- yel ESER) =the water flows and the wind blows
İSE-EĞER = (IF-EVER)
(yel ESER- ekin EĞER)= the wind blows and bows the crops
EĞER-ISE ve İSE-EĞER yapıları "koşul" belirtmek için kullanılır ve çoğunlukla birbirinin yerine kullanılabilirler.
İSE-EĞER: "If ever" anlamına gelir ve gerçekleşme olasılığı daha düşük olan bir koşulu ifade eder.
"If ever you need any help, just let me know." (Yardıma ihtiyacın olursa eğer, sadece haber ver.) or (Herhangi bir yardıma ihtiyaç duyarsan, bana haber vermen yeterli)
“If I'm not tired, we’ll visit them in the evening.” = “Yorgun değilsem eğer akşamleyin onları ziyaret ederiz”
EĞER-ISE: "Even if" anlamına gelir ve gerçekleşme olasılığı daha yüksek olan bir koşulu ifade eder.
"Even if it rains tomorrow, I will go for a walk." (Yarın yürüyüşe çıkacağım, yağmur yağıyor olsa da eğer) or (Yarın yağmur yağsa bile yürüyüşe çıkacağım.)
“Why should i go to work, (even) if I'm not getting my salary” = Eğer maaşımı alamıyorsam, neden işe gideyim ki.
Best teacher of English on the internet.
Thank you.
Actually to learn English, knowing its history is a must and I got to know of it & very much thankful to our great teacher. Wish her a long life to be with us
It's real blessing watching your decent simple yet informative way of explaining development of English language I enjoyed every second and as you go further with explanation I felt more curious to know more .. special thanks
Your way of teaching English is smooth and comprehensive. I have impressed much to learn the history of English language.
Nico
What fantastic teacher! I really enjoy her class! She is so calm that it is a pleasure hearing and learning! Greetings!
I have just sent this video to my students, hoping they will enjoy it. I am going to show it to them tomorrow. Thank you!

She is the best English teacher I ever followed.
I LOVE how you represent comprehension.
As a native spanish speaker it's such a pleasure to learn from this remarkable woman. Thank you very much. (i would like to add one word.... chocolate!!!)
Y patatas y tomates y...... etc-
I am mejicano.gracie thank you teacher. Good teaching love it!!!
She's such a humble teacher. I wish those teachers who always 'correct' students pronunciation (British pronunciation) to American pronunciation 😁 could see this channel.
😂😂😂right
I reckon it's got to do more with an accent issue.
The English people talk too slow.
lol, American English isnt even considered English by most
The best english teacher in the web. I recommend this channel to you.
Gill is the best English teacher ever! Thank You for Your videos!!!

Thanks a lot for every class . I really like them. I'm from Mexico City . I'm an English teacher in my country, and these perfect classes help and improve my knowns. Thank you very much !
The Anglo part comes from Anglia. a region and tribe in northern Germany and southern Denmark, the very name Eng-land too.
@@raiseyourworld5324 It's funny going further and furher in known history. Thank you for that!
For almost the first time I understand every single words I am hearing in English language. You're a wonderful teacher . 👍
Dear Gill, you're incredibly lovely and adorable! At the end of this video you were so tender and sweet when, because of your little mistake about googling and hoovering, your face turned immediately to RED when you realized it ! You are so human and sweet, that's why everyone loves you. Thankyou Gill!
