Comprehensives/Qualifiers, my field calls them Preliminary Exams (prelims for short). I took mine last summer and they are quite a doozy to prepare for, its a lot of reading and writing. Its super interesting to see what other fields ask of their doc students because mine had a completely different structure. Good luck with the preparation!

I do find it super interesting what other fields do, and even different departments within the same field! Thank you!

Keep up the hard work Katherine! For my emergency management PhD, I have two comprehensive exams...one on research methods, another on emergency management/disaster science theory. For each exam, I have 30 days to write and submit the written component to my committee, then I do a verbal defense. Both my comp exams are scheduled for Summer Semester 2023, after completing my coursework in the spring. I'll also be constructing my research proposal over that summer for my proposal defense in the fall of that year. I'm having exciting conversations with my adviser about my dissertation topic (right now it's revolving around individual/household warning communication and challenges to response based on race and class ...my master's degree is in meteorology and I'm involved in the forecast meteorology community so this is of interest to me).
This summer, i'll be writing 6 literature review papers on theory, methods, and the state of knowledge on warning communication in preparedness and response phases.

I’m currently completing my masters in Emergency Management. It’s cool to see what your PhD outline is.

Wow that sounds like a lot! Plenty of time to prepare though. Your research sounds fascinating - excited to see how it shapes up as you continue through your program!

very cool vid. I'm already ABD and now focus on postwar Japan (Tohoku cultural history)(used to do US-Japan culture/diplo/nuclear diplo more though). I had long and grueling days/years of comps. Our dept has 4 field comps and an oral exam at the end. You have to go to an office, use an old laptop w/o internet (sometimes, you're allowed to bring one page note but sometimes not allowed) and answer two to three questions (sometimes you're already told what the question is sometimes not). You're allowed to have about 6 hours to complete a field and you basically continue that for four times total within a span of 10 days. On the 10th day counting from your first one, you do an oral exam. I ended up doing the series of exams twice as I failed my first comps due to a bad relation with one of the committees. Originally I did, Modern Japanese diplo, US diplo, US pop culture, and visual/material culture in 2018, In 2019, I did, Modern Japanese diplo, Modern Japanese culture, US diplo, and visual/material culture. I personally do not ever wanna do the comps again, but hey, I learned something. keep up your good work!

Wow that sounds like a very intense process - even more than ours! I'm definitely not looking forward to it, but everyone says its just something you have to get done. Thanks for watching!!

I cannot believe you’re prepping for comps while doing coursework! That seems like an insane amount of reading all at once. Also I just got one of those book stands and it’s changing my life. Our comps are three papers over the course of two weeks. I’m just thankful they aren’t in person in a several hour long block anymore 😂 best of luck to you!

It is pretty wild. Legit reading at least 4 hours a day for comps in addition to other stuff. Fortunately I just have one seminar though, aunt then my other two classes are both things I need for generals! (prospectus and an independent study with a committee member. Love the book stand!! My second favorite thing besides my second screen!! Thank you - good luck to you too!!

Cool video! A PhD in history is a dream academic major and it is awesome that your completing it! As an older student I just started back at a local community college and will transfer to OSU in a couple years. Still a long ways to go before the graduate level!

I'm starting to read for my exams this week 😱 and I have a field in feminist theory and gender & sexuality studies! But won't be doing that field until probably later this summer-my exam isn't until December, so it is a very long reading process. Exciting to hear what books you're reading, especially in your gender field!!

That's awesome! That's great that you will have so much time to prepare. I will definitely keep talking about what books I am reading in my videos!
