  • Week in my Life at Ohio State University | History PhD Candidate
Hello friends! If you are new here, my name is Katherine and I am a third year PhD candidate studying history at the Ohio State University! I am a social historian of war, and my area of focus is France + Australia during WWI.

I was super anxious about my History PhD application results, and UA-cam recommended your channel. I watched your video for a while and recently I got good news! Really excited and I love your channel so badly!

Your videos are always inspiring! I would love to see how you set up your workspace, how you use different computers/ipad/apps etc. But regardless, I hope you keep posting! Thank you and have a great February.

Ooh man getting an iPad was a game changer for my grad school experience too! I’m someone who needs to annotate while reading, so I used to have to print out PDFs of articles all the time. So much paper has been saved since I got an iPad 😅 love your videos, as always! 😊

Hi, hope you are having a good semester! I'm wondering if you could do a video on how you read and take notes. I always end up with a bunch of sticky notes or page markers, and I want to master this skill as I’ll be starting my Ph.D. in the fall (just got my first acceptance letter 🙌🏽🙌🏽)

Hi Katherine! I love your content. Do you think Johns Hopkins is a top choice for a Ph.D. in the Humanities (Modern Languages)? The stipend is indeed excellent (circa 34k) and the professor I would be working with has great intellectual production and seems to be very approachable. Please do a video on tablets that work as old notebooks (writable screen) and are the best to write/edit academic notes :)

Hi! I don't have much info on other universities, but I do know that Johns Hopkins is a well-known university and a good choice. As far as stipend (that does seem good!) you have to weigh how that will compare for your area and cost of living!

Hi Katherine! I'm starting my MA this year and I was wondering if you have any general tips for preparing to apply to a PhD program at OSU? I'm an English major and I eventually want to become a university professor. The program at my university is for 2 years, and I want to make sure I'm playing all my cards right and preparing myself adequately. OSU is a dream school for me as it's very close to home and I've heard nothing but amazing things about the faculty there. Thank you! :)

Hi! Congrats on starting your MA! I am less familiar with the English department and their application process, but a good place to start is to contact a professor in the department who you could see yourself working with. It is always better to have a personal connection, as they will be able to fight for you in the admissions committee. In the meantime I would use your MA to help you decide what you want your PhD dissertation to be about. That way you can clearly articulate that in your admissions essay!

Hi Katherine! Just wondering where you got your desk chair from and if it is comfortable for long periods of sitting :)

I got it from Ikea! It's ok for long periods of sitting. Probably not the best chair you could buy, but it's worked well for me for it's cost over the last 2 1/2 years!
