Hey i got an aftermarket hurst shifter for my car. Ive been trying to figure out what the T section of the shifter is for, the wings that you can pull up with your fingers? Mine seems to be just for aesthetics but i was thinking about modifying it to work as a reverse lockout to prevent myself from going into reverse without pulling them, especially when aggresively downshifting since i have a 5 speed. If you could lmk what its for and how it works that'd be great, so far ive only been able to see corvettes with them

The T section that you pull up is suppose to be what let’s the car go into reverse. If it’s going into reverse without pulling that it sounds like you have a shifter issue. At the bottom of the shift lever in the shifter body, there are 3 arms with a slot cut into the top of them. And the bottom of the shift lever itself is a lug that fits into those slots. As you move the lever in neutral, the lug moves between all three levers except the reverse lever. The trigger moves a small plate up to uncover the reverse lever's slot. Sounds like that little plate is worn or broken off.

@nickbrooksgarage i dont have a shifter issue, mines a 5 speed so if it worked how you say it shout i wouldnt be able to go into 5th either without pulling the T. It sounds like it works the same way as the other hurst reverse lockout shifters with the plate in between 3-4 and 5-R, i was hoping it would be a different mechanism. Id love to see how it works though, the bottom of my actual shifter 'stick' is solid, with nothing connecting the T to any other mechanism inside the shifter, i was thinking of drilling through the bottom and running a cable up the inside which id be able to pull with the T. Id just have to figure out a way to only lock R and not 5 using that cable
