I think the power is in being aware of the ego and becoming the observer to the thoughts. The ego is necessary for sifting through information and for having a physical experience in general. When I learned how to observe my thoughts and become aware of my ego that is when I began to become more present. Awareness and presence helps to balance the ego.
Aaron: That's true, with one exception: the ego is not necessary. The mind works without ego much better. The ego is just a filter of reality and stands in your way. Get rid of it altogether and most of your problems will vanish. Check out The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.
Grant: You don't need to be proud of anything or keep the ego in check. You just need to dissolve it and then you will realize that pride is only a waste of energy. Start with regular meditation and watching "your" thoughts. Over time you will notice that most of them are not "yours" at all. They are made up stories from the past, media, your parents - many of them manipulative to sell you stuff or ideologies. The ego is just like a madman babbling in the background all the time getting angry for petty reasons. Don't listen to that bum. The ego needs you but you don't need the ego.
+onreact Tolle takes a rather harmful approach towards the ego and thought in general. The ego is needed for your life, but it's when it gets out of control that it becomes a problem. The same way people let their thoughts rule them. The teachings I have learned from say it's not the erasure of those things but getting them in balance so that one isn't ruled by them. Like it's said in Buddhism, it's not eliminating thought it's not letting your thoughts rule you.
Hey guys! Ego Is the Enemy comes out today, and we animated the prologue for you. If you find it interesting, you can check out Ryan's new book here: amzn.to/237D556
When I worked in advertising there was always the problem of selecting the 'voice-over'. Not too many people have the talent to do that. You can have a great voice, but might not have the talent to bring emotions to live. And if you don't have a great voice... well. Don't even try. @fightmediocrity: you have the talent and the voice. Accept it. It's a gift. But people who are gifted many times don't see it theirselves. They think it's too easy. Well, it's not. It is what makes you special. Use it. Maybe you are bored with it, and want to try something different. But we aren't bored. Thanks for all the great vids!
This is quite amazing. Im really acting on this new idea of "ego" and the "self" after reading about it in Elliotts book King and I gotta say, life is a lot more pleasant. The moment I dropped a little of my ego, accepting myself in the process, my level of presence and happiness went through the roof. That last point never seemed truer to me than now. We do need to push back these "fancy stories" we tell ourselves that really satisfies our ego to the back seat. Its really nice to see one of my favourite authors write about this.
I'm not perfect in this, but i've been to live by a similar statement, Pride is the enemy. For pride and dignity are two very different things, pride is entirely selfish and self sentered, nothing good ever comes of it, were as dignity coincides with a humble heart, and a humble heart isn 't afraid to step down from the platform, so as to uphold, and uplift others. God bless
Wow!! This is exactly what I needed to hear. I keep telling myself stories, but this changes my focus from what is behind to what is yet to do in my life Thank you!
Your insight on the books is what made this channel great. The authors plugging their books directly, without any review or insight, doesn't have near the value.
You could tell it was going in this direction, when he made the 4-hour work week video, where he proposed his planned business model. Now he is converting subscribers who he had given value to before - into views that earn him money. Converted his insight channel into an advert channel. I always felt like his voice has this sting in it. Was a matter of time. Anyway, he's probably happy, now he's earning money faster. But for how long? This is the first video I saw after some time of not watching him and I immediately see that I do not have to watch any of his other new videos ever again.
+JC Deen Noones getting mad at anyone. He's claiming what made this channel valuable to him (and many others) in the first place is now gone and has been replaced by a business model that's still profitable but requires far less effort. Which is great for the former value creator (former because he's not creating the amazing value he used to make, but instead has decided to just let book writers advertise their books on his channel to his large subscriber base.) but the people who subscribed to him for his awesome insights and storytelling skills are obviously going to be disappointed. Imagine there was a local pizzeria down the street close to your house. The owner makes the most wonderful, unique tasting pizzas you've ever tasted. Then one day he decides to franchise and renames his local pizzeria to Dominoes and hires some basic low skilled workers to make some dull pizzas that lack the creativity and imagination the original pizzas you loved so much once had. (Continued...)
Amazing! thanks Fight and thanks Ryan. I'm also a workaholic, had lots of panic attacks few years ago, I can really relate to ryan's story. Ego is the enemy, always. I have also seen my mentors became consumed with ego, i was really disappointed with them. Its important to always meditate and always take that scary journey inwards to ourselves before we pursue our journey outwards.
The ego is literally the devil in the bible. By falling victim to your ego (which is an illusion) you create hell on earth for yourself. Great book btw I have it on audible.
Excellent! Just got the book through audible and can't wait to listen! This channel has introduced me to so much and offers actionable and inspiring information in bite sized chunks so I'm so glad you're here. Thank you. 😊 -Darren.
Your videos are just too great! GREAT MUSIC! GREAT AUDIO! AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST: One of the GREATEST CONTENT on UA-cam!! Please keep going uploading. With such videos it is really possible to change thinking in general for many people. Thank you! Greetings from Germany! :)
You got your quote from reading Marcus Aurelius. By this, I mean you were inspired deeply by him, enough to write two books and borrow heavily from his writing - something he would be proud of I imagine. You brought Marcus' words to the masses, and I thank you for that as a world without ego is a greater place. As MA said, “The best revenge is not to be like your enemy.”
cool that you did this collaboration, ryan holiday is definitely one of the authors i admire most in the self-help world, exactly because he is not so full of himself. i would love to have him as a guest on my channel at some point.
This is by far one of my favorites. It was very touching and to the heart with Ryan speaking. Maybe because it is something I can resonate with. It's almost bone chilling how much it resonated
Great book, great summary and even better author. Recently, I started studying and practicing stoicism and I have to say it changed my life, my perception and my environment. My thoughts and my behavior became so much better and I have to say one big THANK YOU to Ryan Holiday because his books helped me change my life. :)
Mark, what an inspirational story, behind the glory & glitz. I look forward to reading the book. FightMediocrity, I miss hearing your voice, but appreciate this channel. Thanks for sharing.
I really enjoyed this one. I felt like I could resonate with the narrator, maybe not because of the same things, but definitely knowing and having an understanding of many of the topics that he hit and how they've impacted my life. This was a good one.

Hello, the past two weeks i have been watching all of your videos and have found them really helpful, i have been inspired by many of the topics discussed. However i have been facing a problem with choosing what to do next , of course i don't expect you to find the answer for me but to demonstrate the way that you use to decide what you will choose to do to improve yourself each time. I think many people will be interested to watch this kind of video and you may enjoy to find out or figure out your own thought process n decision making. Thank you for the nice videos.
wow, what was said here was so deep and beautiful and needed so much. Putting the script aside, the drawing animation thing was the best I've ever seen, so creative and fitting. In fact it was so good that I felt the moment when it want perfect, the bit, for 3 seconds when he was shading in the word ego. Thank you for that work of art!
Now we see why you should never judge a book by it's cover. Success on the outside isn't always as pretty behind the scenes. And even those seemingly not successful can have a heart filled with joy and fulfillment, but the same goes vice versa. Take the time to learn from everybody you meet and your chances of REAL success will rise. #coachMP
