  • My EV road trip from Port Samson to Broome in a Polestar 2
Good morning Whim Creek and the Pilbara!!
Charged to 100% overnight at the van park and saw the sunrise as I packed up.
Left Port Samson on first light and now at the another of amazing Biofil used chip fat chargers, this one at Whim Creek. They're crowdfunded and installed by John Edwards who is driving his Hyundai electric truck around Australia and is now in Daly Waters, NT.
There are now a record nine EVs simultaneously attempting the lap of Australia, which is amazing!
Charged to 98% and then it was another 100km to Port Hedland for another top up, but at a slow charger as that is all that's available because the actual fast charger is blocked due to construction at the port, how ridiculous is that!
First 3 phase charge of the trip! Located at the back of the Walkabout Hotel at Port Hedland, currently the only option in town.
Strong east headwind so will aim for Pardoo Roundhouse 140km away, which car says I will make with 34 per cent. There is a fast charger there but it's been playing up so fingers crossed.
Car also says I would make 80 Mile Beach Roadhouse with only 14 per cent after charging here to 100 per cent which will take 3 hours - not so keen sitting here for that long, especially as car showing 41 degrees!
Okay very interesting! I crashed the whole Pardoo Roundhouse momentarily by plugging my car in.
The manager came over and nicely explained this WAEV charger can't work off just solar and he needed to turn on the generator.
I suggested he put a sign up telling EV drivers to speak to the manager before charging.
It then worked between 9 and 50kw, then shut down completely.
Good news is I have more then enough to get to the next charger at Sandfire Roadhouse.
Bad news no dogs allowed at 80 Mile campground so I guess I will keep going!
Made it the legendary Sandfire Roadhouse.
Charged the car half way on the perfectly working charger and will spend the night here. Will finish the charge tomorrow when it's less hot.
Tomorrow it's only 230km to Broome, where we will spend the day and night if we can find somewhere as it's supposed to be really busy.
Then the next it's Derby before making our way east to the NT border.
Ahh the deliciousness of air conditioning!
I'm more happy here in the donga at the legendary Sandfire Roundhouse than I would be at 80 Mile Beach or anywhere else right now.
Being in this little room, so reminds me of my time on the Telfer mine. Back then in the 80s, the 80 Mile and the Sandfire were the top holiday destination for us mine families, back before FIFO.
Dinner was lamb chops with gravy and I also bought a ripper tshirt, but I'll have to do laundry soon.
And finally the day's trip stats: Travelled 498.6 km with efficiency of 20.3 kWh/100km despite an easterly head wind, and 6:18 hours behind the wheel, doing 90 to 95kph on the open road.
Meanwhile outside sits the Sandfire charger all lit up!
    Sandfire to Broome (Sept. 15)
Good morning Sandfire and the Great Sandy Desert, South Kimberly!!
Charged the rest of the way up to 90% before heading the 320 km to Broome.
Fantastic stay at the iconic Sandfire Roadhouse, especially the aircon. Lots of wildlife including goanna, camel, wallabies and flying foxes, as well as peacocks and geese.
Just before leaving, I managed to offload the roof basket, giving it to Trevor the drill support trucker, who was most pleased. So just like that it's gone and now I feel as free as a bird.
Woo-hoo!! We made it Broome. First part of our mission accomplished.
On the way we found Stanley and top-up charged at the remote Bidyadanga solar charger.
Hardly needed as with no roof basket we are back getting huge efficiency, now should be able to get close to 480km doing 100kph, with efficiency under 19kWh/100km.
Did the obligatory welcome sign pic and found Town Beach. Now a swim, shopping and find somewhere to stay.
So far 5738km travelled, only another 10,000 to go.
Next we turn northeast to Derby!
The local Broome Tesla owners heard I was coming and sent out a welcoming party, which was nice.
There are four Teslas in Broome, all delivered to their owners on the back of a truck. Also two Kona EVs.
Twig and I wanted to go for a swim at the town jetty but were informed there was a 3.5m saltwater crocodile spotted there this morning.
Managed to snag a spot at the best caravan park in town right on the foreshore, so hopped in the park pool as it was 38 degrees. Twig was not allowed and so not happy!
A pleasant and interesting afternoon and evening in Broome, encountering a random suburban bushfire on the way to the carwash.
Then headed up to Cable Beach to watch the legendary sunset. Watched a French slackliner inadvertently topple a palm tree on the foreshore.

What a beautiful opening panorama, Stan. I have a bit of the black dog hanging around and can't settle to watching much right now. But I promise I"m gonna catch up with all your vids as soon as I can. 😊
