I have been reading about the eastern front for 30 years . The impression left with me is " General Winter " was not the cause of Germanys defeat . Sure made it miserable though !
I have also read that these straw over boots were manufactured by Ukrainians and usually worn by the Germans while on guard duty or in static positions...not in combat.
