  • Join Colin and Stuart in a walk around Stuart's Ferret armoured car to see some of the features and qualities of this vehicle.
The Ferret armoured car was developed in 1949 as a result of a British Army requirement issued in 1947, from experience of these vehicles in the Second world War, most notably the Daimler Dingo Reconnaissance Scout Car. Daimler was awarded a development contract in October 1948, and in June 1950, the first prototype of the (Ferret) Mark 1 was delivered.

I drove 2 of these vehicles in Germany whilst serving as a troop commanders driver, I even remember the registration numbers (01EA33 and 01EA76). The service logs went as far back as the Korean war! They could go as fast in reverse as they could forward! The pre-select gearbox was a dream to use but the un-initiated drivers who did not pump the clutch pedal 10 times in each gear, soon found out with the 'kickback', if your ankles were broken or skinned! The only negative part of the vehicle was the fluid flywheel checks, however important it was, it was still a pain in the butt to do! I have fond memories of driving these vehicles, with the wind and rain in your face at 50+ mph, permanent 4 wheel drive, very little storage space, gutsy fuel consumption and the best bit, I only ever had one breakdown in all the three years of driving these vehicles which was only down to a fuel blockage, i.e, running severely low on fuel, the pump was sucking up all the 'dregs' from the bottom of the tank. Great video which brings many memories.

Our troop commanders used them during the first Gulf War. Robust little vehicle.

The longevity of this vehicle is a testament to the engineers who designed it. I think the only comparable vehicle might be the US Jeep.

It looks like it was fitted for Clansman, so you may find it spent a chunk of its life as a rebroadcast ferret, used as a bridge between nets. Mine is a Mk1/2 that had its cupola removed when it was fitted for Clansman. It appears rebro ferrets tended to have the open top of the Mk1.
The rear gun mount *may* be an affection but I do recall seeing pictures of ferrets with the same layout, Including one in American trials where it carried two machine guns at the same time. I think it is in Pat Ware's book Ferret The FV700 Series in British Army Service Warehouse Publications, ISBN = 978-095255-630-5

Nice Video on the Daimler Ferret. Looks very smart! What is the filler neck below the rear right hand hatch, below the external first aid box? I've not seen that before.
