I watched this since you gave it a review. Had been on my watchlist for a while but I saw you reviewed so I said fuck it maaaaaan. I agree the best thing about this film was Howes cinematography. Black and white just hits differently when he’s doing his thing. I had a hard time with the tone of the film since I thought this was going to be more comparable to Parallax View but once that faded away it was easier to just let myself be consumed by the terrifying, stress inducing ending. Thanks for that bit of info on Rock Hudsons personal life because for me he’s just one of those guys I’ve heard of but never dived into his work or legacy. It adds the subtext that really opens up the film to interpretation and discussion. I kind of disagree with your take on the ending though. I love me some ambiguity but I think it’s a powerful ending that I wasn’t expecting since this is a 1966 film but that might just be my preconceived impression on this era of film. Lastly, while I appreciate the absolute gut punch that is this ending I do find it incredibly annoying that we can get a film that allows the powerful corporation to basically get away with murdering people for their own gain but we can’t let a couple of crooks get away with robbing a bank. It’s fucking bullshit.
Glad you checked it out. I am not disappointed with the ending in fact I am just glad he gets some release. The other way I was thinking of is more horrific, but the character doesn't deserve that.
