If you're still looking for a power steering solution, you can take an electric power steering pump from a P1 platform Volvo (C30, C70, S40, V50). It's an electric pump with a fluid reservoir on top, so you can keep the TB's steering rack as long as you can figure out the plumbing. One downside to the Volvo pump is that it'll be at 100% power assist all the time so it'll feel overboosted, unless you also grab the power steering module and make that work somehow.
As a master mechanic by trade I just wanna say I hate doing repairs on these motors everything is in the way of everything I can’t wait to see what you do on this build I know it’s going to be one of a kind and epic.
Engine removal in a 4x4 requires disassembling the front suspension to remove the axles that go through the oil pan. I guess if you were converting to RWD you could just cut them. Fun fact The 4x4 front wheel bearings are the same as the RWD they just do not have a axle shaft going through them.
Im assuming the location should be about the same, but on my 5.3 Envoy, I converted the oil pan to a rear sump pan. I had to modify the factory rack to sit an inch lower and gives about 1/4" space between it and the pan. I can't wait to see your final setup on the front suspension. Always wanted to find a way to lighten it up!
Have you looked at the Prius electric steering? They are a bit big, but they attach to the steering shaft and only require 12v and ground. Everything is in one package. Keeping the hydraulic steering rack as a manual will probably be heavier, though.
From the way it sounded and I’ve heard it from my youth too many times that’s a rod knocking. Looking forward to seeing the next video on the Trailblazer.
Great video! There seems to be lots of support for the '15+ Mustang/F150 EPAS rack. IMHO, they are wide though. From what I can find they have an overall width of 55"+ with the inner tie rods. Being you have a Trailblazer that may not be an issue. Good luck👍👍👍
A mustang rack? No thanks. When they began to fail they will turn the steering wheel by itself. Had it happen to me on my mustang gt. Luckily i didn't run into anyone. That's probably the reason they are always crashing 😂

I understand cutting weight but I want to see it with the front differential just to see how much it could handle before failure. The A4WH setting on my envoy is one of the best things about the vehicle. When the roads are slick I put it in Auto 4 Wheel high and the front only engages if the back tires let loose and it grabs traction instantly. It would be cool to see how much abuse that could take. Then when it fails gut the front.
@Low760 that's badass. I really just want to see how much the stock 4 Wheel drive train can handle. If you are going to rip it out anyway, why not put it to the test?

Calvin; Mercedes Benz uses an electric power steering pump on several models, and if more room is still to be had, an AC compressor run on twelve volts- a fatter alternator might be a good call with that. GM quit trying to make engines look good in the age of cover it all up with tacky, terrible looking plastic. Not alone, either. Keep up the sound picks- you matched the mood well for the rip out!
Dorman and others make quick lock style 90s in all the popular sizes. 800-419 and so on depending on the size you need. We used them on a Coyote swap F100 we did. And for steering why not leave the factory rack and just use the Volvo electric pump assembly? Nothing is gonna fit down there as easy as the factory rack will.
Good video, FYI I believe the extended wheel base versions have a larger more common rear end the GM 8.5 I did a swap on my Envoy with one the only issue was the pinion came out about 3/4 of inch farther then the original. But so far I've had no issues with the drive line bottoming out on the transmission
