I’m also 66 years old. Before 1987, you didn’t apply for a Social Security card until you went looking for your first job. Not sure how this guy got an SS card or a driver’s license in the 1970s without a valid birth certificate showing he was born in the US. 🤷🏼♀️
Well I don't know where you're from but I'm 63 and have had a SS number since the 70's.
I had an SS card issued when in the early 60's when I was 6 or 7, assuming we were a military family moving to Guam. I don't know if a birth cert was needed but I assume it was a much easier process then.
I am 66, too. I had the very same question.
@@debshipman4697 An official birth certificate proving where you were born would have been needed. (also, to get a US passport) SSA also issued SS numbers to resident aliens (green card holders) and visitors to the United States who had unexpired travel visas. Hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of visa holders stayed and worked in the US after their visas expired - that's actually how most undocumented immigrants get here despite the "migrants at the border hysteria". Then, in 1986, Reagan signed the "Immigration Reform and Control Act" and gave most of them amnesty.
I got mine at age 9 in 1975, my much younger brothers got theirs at the same time.

I'm not sure how it is now, but back in the 1970's in the New England States the worst offenders of illegal immigration were Canadian carpenters and construction workers who'd come with papers but stay long after their papers expired.

Common misconception, you do NOT need to be a citizen to serve in the US military. Also, if you do serve, you are NOT a citizen when you get out of the military. Also, if we have a draft, you are not exempt if you are not a citizen. If you live here, you qualify for the draft.
That's stupid... Youre not even fighting for your country at that point
Yep, I served with a guy who wasn't a citizen and we all celebrated when he got it. Luckily they make it easier and support you if you join and you would like to apply.
It’s true, though, tribal Native Americans serve, and they’re citizens of their nations.

Having looked at the USA citizenship system from both sides now, it is truly an antiquated mess. I moved from the USA to AUS - it was going to be a temp move, but now its permanent. As I get older it becomes less feasible (and less attractive) to return, so I looked into surrendering my citizenship (and my annual requirement to file pounds of IRS paperwork with required accountant assistance. To do it correctly & shed both my birthright to live in the US AND my IRS requirement is a lengthy and very expensive lawyer driven embassy visiting process .. its up around $7k in lawyer fees, Exit fees & travel. If you mess it up, you face IRS legal action and prison. I'm not whining for sympathy, I'm just agreeing with your amazing Bahamian guest that the whole process is in massive need of a comprehensive intention & procedural overhaul. And fyi - i am not a rich money hiding tax avoider, i am just a regular wage earner turned retiree ... i have proved in multiple filing years that i do not have millions stashed away in offshore tax haven type accounts ... and Australia is not a tax haven, it's just an awesome place to live. These industries are heavily Republican owned industries.
BINGO....that is the #1 reason they don't want to fix the immigration issue....use it politically but shh🤫we can pay them way less , abuse them ...who can they complain to?
Thank you , just about everyone misses this
Yes and the thing ppl don’t realize most undocumented people pay into social security and often income tax as well, none of them were able to claim any social security as well as other benefits.
This is so true. I live in a farming/ranching community. Most of the owners are MAGA and at the same time, I know for a fact that at least 95% of their workers are undocumented. They are the biggest hypocrites. They know that Republicans will never actually go after them directly for employing undocumented...if Republicans actually made laws requiring jail time for employers of undocumented it would solve a lot of the immigration issues but it would also result in food rotting in the fields (this actually happened for a short time during Trump's Zero Tolerance policy when many of the workers went back to Mexico and there were not enough people to harvest the crops).
He voted all his life to prevent himself from getting social security. Find a republican and ask them if they think if an illegal immigrant should be entitled to social security, if they paid in to it their whole lives. For 99% of them you will get a hard no. Talk about voting against your own interest for your entire life, then being dealt a full deck of karma.
Too bad for him. He is lucky to not be in detention. At least there will be more social security benefits for us because he gets/deserves nothing.
I’m a Republican and if an illegal immigrant can be proven to have been paying his taxes all his life AND hasn’t been in any big trouble or committing violent crimes then yeah I would be open to creating a path for them to get social security.

@@jramirez2068 i dont think anyone is saying this is directly Trumps fault (at least, nobody in good faith), but that tons of immigrants stories are complicated, just like this guy's story. But when people like Trump paint a broad, negative picture about all/most immigrants coming here, it doesn't help at all because the system itself is broken and needs repaired. So many of immigrants CAN'T do what they need to do to come here legally and properly, because the system to do so is such a slow, broken mess. Yet most republicans I've seen talk about immigration don't seem concerned about making it better or trying to resolve the core issue of why people are here illegally. The irony is if immigrants had more rights, US capitalism wouldn't be able to exploit them so much worse than citizens and the whole "immigrants are taking our jobs" thing wouldn't be a thing.
Blame the exploitative capitalist system, not the people who have more to lose than you and therefore can be made to suffer through even more.
I mean, lessening any kind of exploitation tends to be bad for capitalists.
I often point this out. Imagine if instead of jackbooted raids on immigrant families at 3am, you went after the fat stationary targets that exploit them. Predominately Republican ones like Trump hotels and farming.
The point of those raids is to force undocumented immigrants to keep their heads down so they can be exploited with conditions Americans would not accept. OF COURSE republican donors don't want to make subminimum wage workers unavailable for exploitation. I have heard of cases where those raids infamously follow attempts to unionise or improve worker conditions.
That’s why they are pushing so hard for immigration to be illegal - for a cheap source of labor that won’t fight back when their rights are being violated.
Curious im so glad u get it!
I can hear the MAGA now "But, but...he's a white man...the same rules shouldn't apply"
How did he get anything done without a US birth certificate. Enrolled in school, driver license, a job? Did the interviewer even ask about a birth certificate.
Great points!
The short and uncomfortable answer is that he's white. My husband is white and has never needed his birth certificate for anything in his life. To the point his mom lost it and we would have to drive two hours away and get a copy if he ever does need it. I, on the other hand, have needed my Certificate of Citizenship several times in the 17 years I've had it. When we got married, I needed it in addition to my ss card and driver's license. Karma for this guy. It’s rare you see a person suddenly in the position they formerly harassed and discriminated against.

His politics aside, what social security did was wrong. They're not denying he worked and paid into the fund. His politics up front: He helped do this to himself.
SSA was just following the same rules set for everyone else. Many "illegal immigrants" used ITIN for work (although not supposed to) and pay into the system while unable to claim any benefits.

I worked as a Maryland election official for 13 years and all I know is that no one voted in my polling place without ID. As I recall, the vast majority of voters used their drivers license. We also checked their current address with that listed on our voters registration logs. Every so often a voter would show up in the wrong district, but the chief judges would straighten it out for them. We always worked alongside an official from the other political party. At the end of the night our logs needed to tally. So unless the DMV was handing out fake licenses, or folks were showing fakes, it all was on the up and up. 🌊🇺🇸💙
Non citizens can get driver's licenses. I got my driving permit and license as a teen before getting citizenship. The fact is most Americans don't even understand the differences between the different forms of i.d. and identification documents.
The system isn’t broken. It’s working exactly as intended. It’s just not working for them. It wasn’t designed to work for them, though.

If father is a US citizen, then his parents did him dirty by not filing proper paperwork for him when he was a little one. Also, they should have told him he was already held Canadian citizenship as he had (has?) rights there.
The political jokes write themselves with this one.
I am supposing that he doesn't have a passport of any kind since he is just now discovering he's not a citizen. BTW, it isn't surprising that someone who's never traveled abroad is anti-immigrant and pro-Trump, but I digress. What happens if he can't get back into Canada because he doesn't have the documentation? Also, where's DeSantis's Gestapo to arrest him for illegally voting? Isn't that what he does to "illegals" who vote?
Like millions of people around the world, he may be stateless. BTW, never traveling abroad doesn't make you anti-immigrant or pro-Trump. There are lots of reasons she people don't travel outside the US.
DeSantis's gestapo is only for people with melanin. Sounds like this guy illegally voted various times.

But having been abroad, skews the statistics in favor of being non-xenophobic.

In about 2015 the owner of a very popular and award winning restaurant near me discovered that he was not a US citizen. He had a wife, kids, and ran said restaurant. He was taken away from his family and detained for a month. He'd been brought here from Thailand when he was too young to remember. He was terrified. He knew nobody in Thailand and didn't speak the language. Thankfully he was not deported in the end. The local community was outraged and had a massive amount of support for him. He's lucky he had such support.

Honestly, if I found out that I had Canadian citizenship, I wouldn't have even bothered applying for US citizenship. My bags would be packed, and I'd be gone. Why would this guy stick around and try to be part of a country that immediately criminalized him just for existing and living his life? I will never understand how Republicans can justify some of these horrendous cultural and political stances, even when they themselves get caught in the crosshairs of their own broken policies.

Can US residents travel to Canada without a passport? He won't have a US one because he doesn't qualify and he won't have a Canadian one. Maybe he would like to live the rest of his life in an airport and could get tips on how to survive from Tom Hanks. 🤭
Resolving this situation will help show us that doing the right thing by Dreamers, isn’t intrinsically harmful. I’d stick around for that reason, personally.
It would be pretty rad to have Canadian citizenship, though!
As the child of an American father, he had a period of time to PICK American citizenship upon becoming an adult. Because he is in his 60s, that deadline for picking was when he was 18 or 21, whenever the age of majority was changed in the USA.
I have one relative who is the child of an American parent and an European. This person was born in Europe and was brought to USA as a preschooler. The American parent was well educated and made certain the child was aware of having to make a choice of legal citizenship at 18. The 18 year old picked being American. The parent's birth certificate and the child's birth certificate were sufficient proof.
Did the father of this man in his 60s actually have a birth certificate documenting USA birth or naturalization papers?
Did the man in his 60s NEVER need a copy of his birth certificate? I have had to buy 3 copies of mine over the years.
