- Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886), Sancta Dorothea, S187 (1877)
Performed by Alexander Djordjevic
Composed in 1877, Franz Liszt's Sancta Dorothea expresses his religious feelings of humility and near asceticism. Flowing and lyrical, this work begins simply with a rippling triplet figure in the left hand which supports an elegant and songlike melody that pays gentle homage to the saint who inspired this composition. As the harmonies become richer and the chord progressions more complex, the piece evokes a feeling of longing and sacred passion then returns to its original simple form and a mood of quiet, respectful adoration.
A diminutive work of barely two minutes duration, this is a gem of sacred devotional music and should not be overlooked in Liszt's body of religious compositions.
Wonderful. What beautiful growth Liszt underwent as he grew older. It would be fun to imagine the young and the old Liszt meeting each other. thanks for the upload.
Beautifully played. There are so many short pieces by Liszt which are rarely played and which are so far ahead of their time.
This is just beautiful, still can't believe some people hate or dislike liszt.
deafness :)
Liszt is so misunderstood. Ignorant people only perceive him as a showman who composes superficial music, but they refuse or they are just not bothered to know more about his passionate and emotional side where his music is so much more layered and beyond showman.
@@cinnamonsteakhaus9013 True, even in liszt's early years, he composed music with such emotion and passion like the Apparitions No.1, 2, and 3 and his first Ballade in D-Flat.
@@Roice-sq5wj Liszt aways wrote music with extreme quality, people are ignorant so they define him like "the guy who wrote hungarian rhapsody no. 2", sincerely, if one don't know a thing about Liszt, the most important composer of the 19th century, does it even know anything about classical music?
@@guii8993 True
I love Liszt's music, this is a very beautiful composition. Thank you for sharing!
this sounds so modern, Liszt really is the influence of the 20th and 21th century
Without him there wouldn't be the impressionism, and without impressionism...i think there's no need to tell
@@niccolopaganini4268 god I don't even want to think of a world without ravel or debussy
@@niccolopaganini4268 probably scriabin, debussy, ravel, schoenberg, bartok and so on would have written differently
This piece sounds very modern; goes to show how revolutionary Liszt’s composing was.
Thank you for posting this beautiful performance of a beautiful piece. Alexander Djordjevic's "Gray Clouds" (from which this comes) is my favorite CD of Liszt's late music, 16 astonishing works programmed and performed with great sensitivity and power. :)
Touching religious simplicity. Small pretty gem, btw playable by a 5th year piano class pupil. Love it.
I am 3rd class and learned it in 2 hours
@@dwacheopus I said 5th year not 5th class. Fifth year according with Italian class taxonomy is intermediate (Bach 3 voices inventions level, to be clear). I don't think someone that can't play Bach 3 voices inventions can play this one, can they?
@@pietrolandri6081 oh, ha ha, sorry
@@dwacheopus 😎
Beautiful piece by Liszt, per usual.
Thank you so much Medtnaculus.
Amazing piece! Since it doesn't look to technically difficult I'm inspired to learn it and upload it to my channel.
Liszt can be a real tear jerker
Enfin un morceau de Liszt accessible au commun des mortels !
It sounds a little like Janacek, as it could belong in On an overgrown path
If I am not mistaken he dedicated this to his mother, who passed away on saint Dorothea’s day…
stunning
What a music Listz !
Tztztz...clicking on this fabulous Liszt work and they give me an ad for this cheesy pop piano app. Gtfo!
What a weird piece by liszt. He didn't fight with the piano and just relaxed such as consolation.
Lol its weird when Liszt isn't combining every technique known to man in one piece 😂😂😂
абсолютно райская музыка. открыла для себя новое чудо.
Beautiful beyond measurement.
Hm...I should learn this piece. Then I can say that I can play at least one piece by Liszt😉
Now I’ve managed it🙂
@@miguswede-2557 nice one!
Great
Fragility, gentle
La tendresss..
Think Debussy's Les Cloches could have been inspired by this.....?
Sounds kind of similar doesn't it?
I thought Lizts music was impossible are you sure this is by him
Yep! Liszt was not merely a womanizing virtuoso. He also had a deeply meditative, spiritual side.
