      She makes me constantly smile and laugh so much. She's a delight - rare soul so full of love and beauty. I was bummed out, stressed with demanding things going on. I knew, all I have to do is hear her to get my mind more positive. I only found her channel a few days ago. For anyone reading, you MUST WATCH her video about how to make soy paste. She shows the process over a year in snippets. You will laugh and smile so much. She's so wonderful.

    Oh, Maangchi! Your story gave me a lot of happiness bringing back so many memories. When I first started making Korean food, I lived in Missouri also. I was on a skeleton budget. I had to do an internship more than full time for 6 months where I only got paid 1/3 of what I should have made minimum wage. I had to do this as part of my college degree. My husband searched and searched for a job for months, every single day, and found only a small part time job in the last few months of our time there. I too would take my time to compare prices in Walmart! We had so many potatoes. I cooked many Korean dishes from your recipes, and that helped me to stay frugal and stay joyful because cooking took away my stress. My husband and I finally got to move and now have an easier time. Now I can afford to make many more dishes and share them with all my friends! ❤️ 감사합니다!!

    I am an older Korean man. I have never cooked food before. This recipe looks simple and made, it was the flavor that my mother gave me.
    I am surprised that this simple recipe makes Korean native flavor. I got the courage. So I will try the "Braised semi-dried pollock (Kodari-jorim)" which looks the best. Thanks dear Maangchi.

( it could cure the Covid lol) so I'm doing it again tonight I only used very little hot pepper 🌶 I don't think it will be the pretty color of yours. I will let you know how it comes out .thank you for all recipes

      @tinamcnalley2575 4 роки тому +3

      @@ehrmanehrmann7115 I don't eat fish either (unless it has NO fishy flavor!) But I do cook with fish sauce/anchovy paste. You only add a tiny amount to increase the flavor profile (umami). Its like using nutmeg in a pan sauce - if you can clearly taste it/ identify it - you've used too much.
      When I make this, I'll probably use the fish sauce, but I'll adjust the soy to accommodate the sodium. (I also dislike too much salt!)
      My local Korean BBQ serves this banchan at room temp, though I think they use more sugar. I was happy to see maangchi use a small amount of sugar - I prefer less sweetness.

    Maangchi, I love your stories for two reasons. First, I like Korean food and I’ve learned a lot about cooking from your recipes. The other reason is because you embody what makes America great. You came here from Korea, learned our language and customs without losing your own, and learned to thrive. America loves Maangchi.

    I’ve been watching you for couple of years. From the very first day I felt like you’re someone that know from a very long time! Like a known person. That time I was going through tough times. I was lonely and lost interest in everything. Whenever I used to watch your videos I felt less lonely and felt like cooking something. And finally with your help I got my passion of cooking back. I started feeling same at this time of pandemic. Felt lonely and kinda sad. For cheer myself up I watch your videos and of course still you feel like an old friend. And yes i cook a lot now to feel better :) I just thought letting you know about it Maangchi. Thank you so much for being yourself and for sharing wonderful wonderful recipes and stories with us.

    Wow, in Scotland we have a very similar, if plainer, dish called Stovies. Potatoes, onions and leftover meat, or perhaps sausage, braised like this using a little water but with just salt and pepper. My mum taught me that you don't stir the ingredients but instead shake the pan so you don't break or mash the potatoes.
    Great , cheap comfort food, perfect for winter weather. I will definitely try your recipe.

    During the pandemic being home for 6 months, i am not a lover of cooking but i like to eat and while at home i was looking for something easy to cook i came upon your cooking site on youtube. My first Maangcha recipe was sangchu geotjeori and i loved it. At that time i didn't have all the ingredients so i improvise but it was delicious and different and since then i always look for more and different side dishes like the potato side dish i am doing right now. Thank you for your time and patience.

    I FINALLY made this tonight. I omitted the anchovies as I don't eat meat, and substituted that with half a cup of vegetable stock. So delicious! I ate it with rice, sautéed spinach and garlic, and sliced cabbage with vinegar. It was the best potato dish I've ever had. Thank you, Maangchi! I love you, Korean mum! x

    중간에 말씀을 평소보다 많이하셔서 놀랐어요. 들려주신 얘기들이 맘을 따뜻하게 하네요. 좋은 이야기 고마워요. 저도 감자 조림을 좋아해서 행복하게 봤어요. 아무 사연도 없지만 가족들과 먹던 기억 자체가 정말 좋은 추억이죠. 오늘 영상은 그런 행복한 기분이 보는 내내 떠올라서 이렇게 덧글 남겨요. 레시피 영상을 밥먹을 때나 자기 전에 봐요. 원래 이런 요리법영상 싫어하는데 망치님 동영상은 항상 다 보게되요. 넘 힐링되고 좋아요. 요리법도 배울 수 있어 좋고요. 오늘 밥상은 정말 완전 집밥이네요. 가지나물을 싫어했는데 보고 먹고싶어졌어요. 브로콜리무침도 좋은 아이디어네요. 항상 엄마가 만들어 주던 것들인데 이번엔 제가 엄마에게 만들어줘야겠어요

    I made this for lunch today! I didn't have any dried anchovies, but I had some salmon in the fridge I needed to use up so I used that instead. I also replaced half of the pepper flakes with gochujang (because I love the stuff and put it in everything lol). Oh my goodness it was delicious!!

I was wracking my brains trying to think of what to make for supper tonight while browsing your videos, I decided to try this but without the onion or anchovies and I used chilli powder instead of chilli flakes and it's still pretty good

    We are in Columbia, MO!!!!!!! If you still remember Chiong's Oriental Market, Maangchi? It closed down and the lot became a downtown apartment for Mizzou students mainly, but right next to it there is a new one called Lee's Market now, owned by the owner of the Korean restaurant downtown (closed now since they want to focus on the market I guess).

    • @Maangchi
      @Maangchi  6 років тому +12

      Yes, the lady of Chong's Oriental Market was my friend! Do you know a Korean lady who had a gift shop in downtown? I'm wondering if she is still running the gift store there. I used to talk to her. She sold some Korean vegetables at Farmer's market.
