Pretty good MPG considering the curb weight. My 2014 short bed crew cab Cummins before mods and a 3.42 rear end was getting about 20-21mpg on the highway at 70-75mph. Once I put a lift kit and 35 inch tires, I lost 2mpgs with dpf/scr system in-tact.
Nice comment. It stands to reason that the lift and tires mean less fuel economy, even if the tires are larger in diameter. I still hear from friends or strangers in casual conversation that they are surprised fuel economy goes down when customizing the truck like that. You are further proof of the results. Thanks.
I just found out today that if you put the truck in the L position it tells you what gear you are in...I am a Ford guy and was very impressed with this truck in the GMC Denali version. Keep up the good work!!!
TFL >>> André's "gripes": 1) visibility, 2) passenger-side blind spot. Number 1 is kind of a given, the truck is BIG, but, please elaborate on issue number 2. And thanks for bringing us this review with the extra DEF info 👍😊
Great video, and awesome mileage. I would love to see the MPG degradation vs towing. You guys should think about buying a used travel trailer so you can compare with and without towing a real RV. Your tow simulations are usually using a construction trailer or horse trailer with water tanks, which mimics weight but not the wind resistance you get when tow a big box RV. A 28' used trailer at about 5k lbs unloaded would do it (Keystone Bullet, etc.). RV Trader will show what you can buy locally. A couple years old wouldn't cost all that much. Something to think about. Thanks again, love these videos!
I've been thinking somewhat the same thing. They need to do travel trailers to get the effect of aero drag on the large frontal area, and to experience directional instability of crosswinds, and of passing semis. I transport travel trailers for money, and the typical ball hitch that I tow is 8 ft wide x 11 ft high, 27 ft long, 7000 pounds. Fifth Wheels are typically 8.5 ft wide x 12 feet tall, but I tend to get better fuel economy with them than I do ball hitches. Fifth Wheels are also a lot more stable in crosswind conditions.
I own a 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 HD, same engine, transmission, same interior, and ride. The gas tank is amazing, the fuel economy is amazing, and I adore the 10 speed.
All that tech is nice but after a while it will stay in the shop more than being used that's why I stay with work trucks air CD player cruise control and power windows I'm good!

That was a really cool test! I love this kind of stuff! Now go do the same test with the new 6.6 gas version of the truck please! I want to see how the gas motor stacks up against the diesel!
I really hope they dont do that. Most of these fools have a hard enough time at 70 not killing them self! But most interstates are not rated for thst high of a speed anyway. To many curves, hills, blind spots, and poor overall road condition.
I love the 6’10” bed. The 20mpg is pretty sweet. The interior is just ok. But that front end/grill is awful. No way I’d spend $80k on something that looks like that
I wonder if all of these new transmissions are gonna last like say an older 6 speed. Anyone feel the same way because now they're constantly shifting gears instead of staying on one. I feel like the more shifting that happens the more problems are going to have in a long-run for reliability. Something is going to wear out quicker with a constant gear change
According to the GM website turning radius is 52.7' which I believe is about a foot or so more than the previous generation. Makes sense I guess being that it's 10.5 inches longer than before
@@dank8017 thanks for the info I had an 89 half ton that was terrible and I had an 89 HD 3/4 ton. That would turn circles around the half ton. Who wants to do a 5 point turn in a two-lane road.
The seats are nice? 6:07 Are the seats in the 2500 different that the 1500, if you are tall I know you can not like that short seat thigh support. Drive that road back the way you came and check the MPG, there is a reason they had you pick up the truck up there.
People don’t understand what kind of person buys this truck. Usually a family of 4 that does a lot of outdoor activities like camping or towing a boat. They want something that looks nice inside on the outside. The basically want a suburban that can tow 18,000lbs
777jones actually, towing a camper with a wife and two kids and all our stuff I’m nearly maxed out on my payload rating for my half ton. And we only have a little 23’ camper. If people want more like a 26-30’ camper (say they want their own separate bedroom space), then an HD truck is the only truck to safely haul those loads.
@@jamesdillaman What's in the bed? I have 4 kids and a dog. We tow a 28' Travel trailer with our Sequoia. 90% of our stuff goes in the trailer. The trailer is about 6000lbs to 6500lbs depending if we take water or not.
Geoff Moore well my payload rating is around 1200 lbs. Me, the wife and kids, and things in the bed total about 500-600 pounds. My trailer weighs 5500 pounds with a tongue weight of 600 pounds. That makes a total payload of 1100-1200 lbs. maxed out. As my kids get older I’ll either have to carry less stuff, load up the rear of the trailer (which can lead to unstable towing conditions) or upgrade to an HD truck.
It is exactly otherwise with DEF, or AdBlue like we call it. It's only in use when you don't need much power, because the engine works best and cleanest when you floor it.
I’d say definitely more then that, the current L5P’s have been picking up in some cases 7 mpg’s, so if that combined with the 10 speed is any indication, over 30 mpg’s could be a very attainable number, won’t know until someone does it but it’s very possible.
Great test Andre. How large are the front seats? Are the bottoms wider and longer? I didn't like the last gen. and bought a Ford because of it. The truck is made larger but I need to sit in one to see if I could drive 400 or 500 miles in it and not want to get out desperately. I'm 5'9" tall and 200lbs. Not exactly huge for a seat not to fit. What about the alignment of the steering wheel? Does it line up? Thanks.
I have a large truck as well and yes they are hard to maneuver in tight spaces, this is why you always back up in to a parking spot because it is much easier to drive out instead of backing out in a parking lot full of cars.

Thanks.
You should put the diesel cap back on before filling the def.
qball2000able why?
@@chestercalloway3812 To keep from putting def by accident in where the diesel fuel goes.
@Richard Nowak Another reason DEF us useless
Capless fuel tank
I just found out today that if you put the truck in the L position it tells you what gear you are in...I am a Ford guy and was very impressed with this truck in the GMC Denali version. Keep up the good work!!!
That 15 hour trip would be 9 days in a Tesla. 😏😀
This was actually the second Chevrolet. The first one broke down 500 miles into the trip second one made it the rest of the way.
More like 18 hours lol
@@inlinewhine you can’t get any inline whine with a Tesla
I just been fueled few days ago at same gas station in Oregon with my 16 GMC Duramax
TFL >>> André's "gripes": 1) visibility, 2) passenger-side blind spot. Number 1 is kind of a given, the truck is BIG, but, please elaborate on issue number 2. And thanks for bringing us this review with the extra DEF info 👍😊
Blind spot just lean forward when you want to look along with normal look into mirror. Blind spot fixed. Real simple
Even seeing these in person I still don't like the look of it. I'm impressed with that mpg result though.
If I see you in person I won't like the looks of you either. go buy the inferior product of fugly ford and butt ugly ram.
Ha would take a Ford all day over that pile. Ugliest shit box ever!
@@bobhirdes6725 that's funny. You're just butt hurt cause Fugly Fords and Butt Ugly Rams are outselling the ugliest truck on the planet. Waaaahhh!
I'm a fan of the high country's looks. It's much more traditional. The other trims, I really don't like at all
That's why there's the GMC. Same truck underneath and looks a hell of a lot better.
Would love to see empty fuel economy numbers on all HD trucks.
So what happens if you run out of DEF fluid on the road? And do you have to refill the DEF fluid? What about those people who just won't refill it?
I enjoy the review, but UA-cam keeps inserting ads in the middle of Andre saying something. It is very distracting and confusing.
Hope you can do the 2020 ford 7.3 gas that much see what mileage is.
8 MPG probably
Great information TFL, I always look forward to being educated from this team, Thanks!
Hey Thanks a lot Andre...I was hoping you'd show this truck..Awesome Machine..Great review..Thanks Dude
Meh! You're lazy. My truck doesn't have power windows! And sometimes, it doesn't even have air.
@@andyharman3022 naw not lazy just dont want to sweat driving home after a hard days work I always buy used I drive 100 miles to work every day cruise is nice
@@Danzilly 3 hours minimum on the road every work day? I thought my 86 mile round trip was too much time.
I’m just sitting here relaxing in my air conditioned seats 👌 so nice
this man really bringing the value down on new trucks
Looks wayyyy better with the bow tie in the middle, I really like it now
Looks worse imo. The bowtie belongs on the hood like it always was till they did it with the square body and stuck with it even when their trucks go uglier. Finally when get Chevrolet back where it belongs and everyone bitchs.
Would love to see the 6.6 gas HD texted as well. 👍
The 6.6L gas engine texted me personally and he said buy a diesel if you tow much....
I tested the 6.6 gas last month. While my 2018 duramax was getting something done. It was a slug, felt under powered, but very quiet!!
How much mpg does it do when pulling the max towing capacity
Noe The Rancher
Not at max. But my ‘17 towing 12K at 65mph I’m averaging right at 12.5 mpg.
Incredible efficiency there on fuel consumption for a HD. That's just amazing, and really unexpected from a realism standpoint.
That was a really cool test!
I love this kind of stuff!
Now go do the same test with the new 6.6 gas version of the truck please!
I want to see how the gas motor stacks up against the diesel!
I just got my new 2020 GMC AT4 2500 HD, went 85 miles up and down hills on I-84 going between 65 and 75 mph and I got 24mpg.
20 MPG in that big truck is awesome, especially with alot at 80mph. My 17 Explorer V6 only gets 18.5.
Don't fill the def with the diesel cap off the def can splash sometimes and if you have the diesel cap off you could get def in the diesel tank
Great job, André!
I’ll be glad when all Interstates speeds are raised to 80 MPH .... were still 70 in FL
I really hope they dont do that.
Most of these fools have a hard enough time at 70 not killing them self!
But most interstates are not rated for thst high of a speed anyway.
To many curves, hills, blind spots, and poor overall road condition.
The gauges on that truck look like a 2008 Malibu that I used to own
My Malibu use to tow 20,000 lbs also🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😍😍
This channel is so addictive...
I love the 6’10” bed. The 20mpg is pretty sweet. The interior is just ok. But that front end/grill is awful. No way I’d spend $80k on something that looks like that
GMC version looks way better
I happen to love the quirky look of the front end it's so spastic and different that it is cool... I didn't think that at first though it grew on me
I wonder if all of these new transmissions are gonna last like say an older 6 speed. Anyone feel the same way because now they're constantly shifting gears instead of staying on one. I feel like the more shifting that happens the more problems are going to have in a long-run for reliability. Something is going to wear out quicker with a constant gear change
Great job TFL as always. Thank you for what you guys do!
It’s so awesome that you guys were here in Redmond. I live a couple minutes away from that airport!
Please include steering radius in your assessments. I've had some Chevys that were good and some that were terrible.
Johnathon Gallagher in other words, people who have no need for a truck like this.
I need 3/ 4 ton to haul my travel trailer and gear.
It is exactly otherwise with DEF, or AdBlue like we call it. It's only in use when you don't need much power, because the engine works best and cleanest when you floor it.
If they get 20 mpg stock, imagine what they’ll be getting tuned and deleted
You will never know
@@SMiller5488 whatcha mean? Ppei cracked the code and have the l5p deleted and tuned !
I wonder how much better it can actually get though. Maybe 1 mpg
I’d say definitely more then that, the current L5P’s have been picking up in some cases 7 mpg’s, so if that combined with the 10 speed is any indication, over 30 mpg’s could be a very attainable number, won’t know until someone does it but it’s very possible.
@@shawncheecham9725 $3,000 for a tune...
Thanks.
Regarding DEF, that's pretty amazing. Our 2017 and 2019 Peterbilt Car Haulers get 100mpg of DEF. Approximately 15 gallon DEF tank.
Andre was running unloaded. If he was heavily loaded, like the big boys are all the time, the DEF consumption would have been higher.
Maaaaan as much as I don't want to say it...but it did kinda grow on me watching all your reviews and stories about the new HD
When people say DEF Fluid 🙄 Diesel Exhaust Fluid Fluid
Your point is falling on Def ears. 🙃
Def fluid DEFinitely sucks :-).

Same when people say ATM machine. Automated teller machine machine.
Some people say DEFluid
So when is GMC Sierra version coming out? Really curious on how it will look! Not much of a fan of the new Silverado HD look.
Wow ! Nice truck . Very impressed with fuel mileage
You're the best Andre. Always thorough and enjoyable.
Good Job on the review. Thanks 👊✌
I have a large truck as well and yes they are hard to maneuver in tight spaces, this is why you always back up in to a parking spot because it is much easier to drive out instead of backing out in a parking lot full of cars.
One minor point - "DEF fluid" is kinda redundant. ("Diesel Exhaust Fluid fluid"). Kinda like "going to the ATM machine..."
Kinda like people saying CAC Card (Common Access Card Card) lol
What’s your VIN number?
Something Obamas EPA created to screw americans over
NIC Card....

Impressive MPG!! I'd love to see what the gas engine gets on the 2020 HD
Nice review. I'm signing up to get one but the sales people actually don't know much about it. No surprise there! I'm tuning in to your other reviews to learn more about this awesome truck...
Same trip with the Cummins and powerstroke now
Watching this video and the impressive MPG makes my hate my 2009 3500HD Dually, which never gets more than 12-13 MPG empty.
One tip for future videos about diesel trucks..... it's either DEF or Diesel Exhaust Fluid... not DEF Fluid. Calling it DEF Fluid is like calling an ATM an ATM Machine. Or a PIN Number (for the card that goes in the ATM) .
AWESOME VIDEOS though. I can count on TFL truck for the best truck content.
I’m guessing the gas HD is going to be around 15 mpg?
He did a reveiw i think it wad at 17mpg. Pick mine up tomorrow
Andre, this is really interesting. HD trucks are getting back to that 20mpg ish number like they used to get before the emissions systems and torque/power wars! lol.
for those prices you can almost buy a peterbilt 379 and rev up that badass cummins/cat engine in style
Every brand has been over 80 grand for 1 ton with options for a few years now
I test drove a high country earlier this week and even with all the disappointment with the interior design after seeing it in person and driving the truck it’s a lot nicer in person. GM has taken it on the chin but after driving all the big 3 in 2 days I fell in love with the Chevy.
Last time I was in Oregon self serving gas stations were illegal
Oregon has finely changed that Law, so some or all stations are now self serve. I live in WA ST, and had heard about change on Local News.
Small populated counties allow self serve otherwise you can fill your diesel or motorcycle yourself.
Excellent video analysis of this nice new offering from Chevrolet!! Great job, 👍
Wow that’s outstanding fuel economy!
Pretty sweet truck. Impressive MPG numbers, especially on a brand new truck. Not a huge fan of the exterior styling. Also it's way more truck then I would ever need. Can you do a video explaining DEF fluid?
Please do a 6.6 gas hd
Ford diesel and gas hd as well!
Just drove one of these truck back from Milwaukee Wisconsin to Mesa Arizona. The trip was about 1900 and I got 16.9 miles. You can drive about 600 miles on a full tank

DAM8658 I agree 100%. I will never buy another car with black interior
