DYNO DAY at Badger 5 - Mapping the G25-550 - READY TO RACE!

- This time on TPR, it's time to get the car on the dyno!
With a strict power to weight limit for the 750MC Roadsports series, we need to know exactly what the car weighs and tune it accordingly to give no more than 300bhp/tonne. Bill and the gang have recently moved into an AWESOME new unit (so much room for activities) so we paid them a visit to get the car fighting fit and ready to rock.
With some road mapping done on the G25-550, we got the car onto the scales which showed 1242kg with a full tank of fuel (1200kg dry) giving us 360bhp to play with. Some adjustments to cam timing and then onto the dyno for a somewhat unusual request - turning the power DOWN to suit.
Don't worry, there were a few full power runs thrown in for good measure, albeit at reduced boost to keep everything reliable when we do turn it up on trackdays!

😍😍getting better and better every video
Great episode. Keep it up 👍
Great video! That workshop looks wicked and so does your audi!
Nice content and well put together video fella. Been watching your vids for a while now, keep at it!
Thanks very much! Will try to keep it up 😁
really enjoyed that episode! well done!
Cheers Ilya! Hope to come and visit you soon 😁
How does the G25 550 compare to the G25 660? I'd like to see both dyno curves together and also get your feedback on how they actually feel both on the road and on track. Very rare to find someone who has tried both on what is otherwise exactly the same set up.
Excellent channel by the way! 👍🏻
hey Ryan! Sorry for the late response!
Out on the Road, you can most definitely tell both turbo's are closely related.
the 550 is definitely the sharper of the two, and makes noticably earlier torque, as you'd expect, but it's definitely at the expense of the top end puff at high RPM.
The 660 still feels like it has instant spool when compared to the GT30 type stuff offering similar peak power, but definitely has the legs at the top end over the 550, happily holding 2.2 bar at 8k rpm, where the 550 is all out of steam.
For a road car, I'd say the 550 would be more punchy and give more useable power more of the time.
For a track car that ISN'T built to regulation, I'd take the 660 all day long myself.
@@TeamPrawnRacing What a/r size have you gone for on the 550?
I'm in the process of a similar build (on a Renault 2.0T) and I'm not sure where the 550 will run out of puff with a 0.72 a/r?
Best episode yet :-)
Cheers Barrie!
Read a lot of your content regarding this crazy world of VAG I now find myself in by default lol after 30 years a FORD RS tuner, nice to put a face to the name and will follow this car / team with interest 👍🏻👍🏻
Waaaay thats my polo hopefully done soon! 💪 epic vid mate
Polo looks Awesome Ross 😍
TeamPrawnRacing cheers mate hopefully be out on track with you soon enough, you were at my local the other week, Thruxton plan on visiting again?
Where are you based mate? Thruxton is 20 mins from me!
TeamPrawnRacing oh really I’m from andover so the track is only 3 miles from me
oew that polo bodykit was looking nice
Amazing. I hope my car have that numbers one day! :D
Great vid badgers new unit is huge
That's what he tells all the women.
😂
some say I am over compensating for something else.... and they're probably right :p
Excellent results mate. That new badger 5 unit looks amazing cant wait to take mine over to him. Does seem a bit mad to de-tune a car lol
Thanks Mark! It was quite counter intuitive, but a good bit of fun and it's awesome to drive!
Great looking facilities at Badger 5 and some good 'arty' camera work in this episode (shame you microphone went woopsie). Anyway, glad the mapping went well and you got a go too; now get some seat time with the new race map!
Yea, that was a mix up between trs and trrs cables! D'oh! We now have a coloured one so we know exactly which we should be using!
@@TeamPrawnRacing I find audio the hardest part to master both on set and in the edit; was the same with the short films I used to do. To be honest, I never knew the connectors were called ts, trs and trrs; had to watch a UA-cam video on the subject and now I'm much wiser.
Best 1.8T build by miles!! makes me sad that I swapped my AGU A3 in for the APY S3, both gone now mind you.
Badger 5 looks mental now! how recent is that?
Glad Bill still got the Ibiza! that thing was nuts
Thanks Adz! The new unit is amazing, I think they moved in Feb this year so still putting their touches on the place 🙂
Such an epic unit, can't wait to get the T4 on the dyno and meet the guys at B5. You asked for a comment on the power. Ok then! Haha Here goes, I'm so pleased you have the little G25-550, this means I'll easily overtake you a few hundred meters after the Avon bridge at Combe. All on camera of course as I pass, picture the slow mo, Mika No Happy Ending soundtrack as you ans Rainbird fade into the distance getting nailed by Type R's, meanwhile in the T4 its all high fives with Decimal Tenths in the passenger seat whilst we chant stroka motaa...into they tyres at Quarry haha Jokes aside, great numbers and can't wait to go out in it! 😎👏
😂😂
hehe... well you can dream :)
@@billbrockbank8111 Dreaming is my area of expertise, haha See you guys soon 😎👍
Good video enjoyed that. I had a good session against that kit car a few weeks back at castle combe. Is it a k20 in it? Saw the Honda sign.
I believe it was an F20c Steve, S2000 engine! Awesome little thing 😁
Glad you enjoyed the vid!
#eye-joy episode all the way
What size hotside housing you are running on that g25-550? .72 or .92?
Hows the spool and responsivity compared to 660? What housing it had?
Really enjoying this series. Great car and great production quality.
Why is the boost threshold so high relative to OEM solutions that make their torque below 2000rpm? Is this done intentionally to protect the gearbox or is this set up just not capable? The turbo is a very similar size to for instance the IS38 used on the current Golf R. Does direct injection really make that much of a difference (2900rpm vs 1800rpm)?
What clutch and flywheel are you using?Great results.I run the same turbo on an S3 8l with oem air filter and got 355 and 53 torque at the wheels with 1,9bar.
Now to route all that power to the proper axle. :)
Nice to see you smiling Nick. Why the piece to camera off a forklift? Lol
God knows. You'd have to ask Rainbird on that one. He insisted 😂
TeamPrawnRacing good luck for race day! Enjoy
By the time you've done some standing in a warehouse, in a dyno cell, outside and have a load of chat in the car there are only so many places left so why not?! 😂
Do you think you're using too much RPM for this level of power ?
So that’s the max power that is achievable with your setup 463hp with the g25-550 within shaft speed sensor limit?
It'd make higher figures with a little more boost and some WMI, but the car will be racing in a mini-endurance series so reliability is king and meth doesn't fit within the rules. Bill has seen over 500bhp on a few of these now, albeit with slight engine differences.
What’s to stop you turning it up during the race?
The full Boost map won't be on the car at all when it goes near a race track. It'll be removed from the ecu entirely to remove any chance of cheating 🙂
Are the 3 maps switchable from inside the car?
Yes mate they are. Map 1 and 2 on a turn switch and map 3 on a steering wheel button
How far away is Bills new place from the old Badger 5?
Not far at all, about 8 miles or so. Such a massive upgrade though - the unit itself is huge and much better set up, and it's tucked away on a really nice old airfield too. Oh, and the cafe (shed at around 0:20) isn't half bad either!
@@TeamPrawnRacing Is the cafe that good then?
@@Sash_Window Given it's a shed in the middle of an airfield, it was spot on. Never going to be fine dining, but tasty grub which was dirt cheap and service with a smile, can't fault it!
Bugger, wrong account. But yeah, it was good!
Is Bill as angry, aggressive and sarcastic in real life as he comes across in any Facebook comment he's ever written, ever? 🤣😂
Bills only ever been awesome to me 😛 he's a great chap. Doesn't suffer fools well online though.
@@TeamPrawnRacing he hides it so well 😂
fuk off :p - haha.... normal service resumed. LOLS
🐌
awd?
Front wheel drive, or as we tend to call it, Wrong Wheel Drive!
What fuel is that on?
all on Shell V-Power
Is that 98oct where you are?
Turn the music audio down abit next time 🙂
At which bit mate? The intro or outro? It's usually got a limiter to keep it all at a similar level, but may well have been missed on this one. Apologies!
@@TeamPrawnRacing love the car and build picking up my g25 550 soon. Great video.
Just on the intro when explaining the vehicle.
Hairs gone dude, just shave it & grow a big beard
