    Hello Maarten, I purchased the camera a day before. I recently started a new UA-cam channel and badly needed a camera to take pictures and to record HD videos. 4K was additional bonus but not much needed in my case due to its large file size. I am happy with what I got for the price that I paid. I watched your video before and after I purchased. There is still lot to learn to understand the camera better but watching the video helped me with all the basic information in quick time. Thanks for making this video. I think Fuji's real purpose to offer only 4K @ 15fps is to provide the equivalent of Panasonic's 4K/6K photo mode, but Fuji's way of implementing rather then for the sake of trying to consider it a 4K video shooter. That's my take on it.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому

      Yes, but that doesn't explain that they implemented to same 4K@15 frame solution on the X-A5 (also a Bayer sensor).

    Great preview - you were the only one to point out the added features while most were busy pointing out the subtracted ones...I'd say it's probably a good beginner's camera for people who want better than cell phone quality and have an interest in learning more about the basics without overwhelming them - also those selfie people! For anyone else who has a bit of experience and is seeking an upgrade the X-T20 would probably be much more satisfying in the long run...eg although it can probably take adapted MF lenses people who buy this would never use those while someone ( perhaps me! ) loves using them with the X-T20...excellent work Maarten...

    I'm a long time DSLR user, but recently decided to add mirrorless to my hardware repertoire.
    Have been using the X-T100 and found your videos (preview and review) very helpful.
    Lovely little machine, but too much like a glorified point and shoot for an old DSLR guy.
    Helpful dealer will allow exchange for an X-T20 or maybe the X-T2 (now discounted with introduction of the X-T3.
    Works for me (and my budget) to stay one step behind the 'latest' model.
    The X-T2 may be overkill for entry to mirrorless, but what the heck, go big or go home.
    Not cheap, but probably would have just wasted the money on food or hydro anyway.
    Regards (from Canada) and keep up the excellent work.

      Currently owning the Panasonic G9 Pro, I am not so sure. I tend to like tilt versus a fully articulating screen. The tilt screen usually handles most scenarious I might want to use it like for overhead or low level shooting. The X-T100 tilt screen, being able to use it 3-way, for vertical low level touch scren shots, portraits, as well as the selfie, is 1+ up on Fuji's implementaton of tilt screen versus the competition with only 2-way tilt. There are pros and cons of both systems, but I tend to lean towards tilt versus fully articulating swivel. It's a matter of subjective personal preference. The screen is always right there immediately ready for a flip up or down. I don't have to open the screen, extend it to the left side of the camera, which becomes awkward when I want to hold and balance the camera with the right hand grip (almost non-existent) while doing touch screen controls on the left side of the camera with the left hand. This is especially awkward with X-T100 as there is very little grip to grab on to assuming you even use the minimal screw on grip that comes with the camera. So, implementation of the tilt screen seems to make better sense to me. My 2-cents worth.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому +2

      Looking forward to having the lend of a G9. Fully articulating is best for video/selfies, as it offers the most flexibility - but I do agree that sometimes for stills it's not the most useful, as it is harder to adjust and makes the camera a little more awkward to hold as you observe. Subjective personal preference plus your overall usage needs. I will note that the operation of the X-T100 screen is slightly awkward.

    • @tokyojerry
      @tokyojerry 6 років тому

      Owning the G9 I reckon I will have to rethink and develop a more positive attitude on full articulation. ha-ha. As for the touch screen it is excellent as is the case with Olympus too. BTW, on a somewhat related note, I would almost like to get the Olympus E-M10-III which has tilt and similar onscreen menu-related touch controls. But the fact is, the body alone costs more then the Fuji X-T100 with body and kit lens (at least in Japan). And you get an APS-C sensor @ 24MP with the Fuji too.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому +1

      Chacun son gout, as they say in France. My Olympus concern is their strange menu system. It's so non-standard I can never find anything.

    Interesting in depth look at the features. I would prefer a 24 to 85 or 100 equivalent lens with manual zoom as a kit lens. Pity they didn't update and improve the 16-50. And is this the most polite comment section on the web? ; )

    XT100 vs XT20 vs XE3, what do you recommend?

  • @tokyojerry
    @tokyojerry 6 років тому

    I currently have Panasonic's G9 Pro camera. It's a M4/3 camera but now having just discovered this new entry-level Fuji X-T100 and am going WoW! Although the touch screen has been common place and quite sophisticatedly developed for both Panasonic and Olympus cameras, Fuji seems to be playing catch up here but doing a good job at it. Even Sony is not at this level of touch screen development. Screen sensitivity for one, not being able to do AF & shutter release for another (only AF) makes this a theoretical winner based on advanced information. I will reserve final judgment until I can have a 'hands on' experience with the camera.
    Maarten, on the touch screen, one of the more (main?) attraction features of the camera, how do you feel about it's responsiveness compared to say Panasonic's and Olympus' touch screen technology? Can you select a screen AF point while composing through EVF? As an addition to this overview menu, It would be nice if you could do a separate video focused only on the menu system structure and touch screen functionality, demonstrating by example or explanation each menu element.
    Oh, and I subscribed to your channel. I do like your 'no nonsense', thorough, brief and 'to-the-point' presentation style. Thanks.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for your enthusiastic participation in the comments for this video. I'd suggest that you might get a little more "wow" out of an X-T20 (but it wouldn't have focus stacking or a front facing screen) as then you'd have 4K at 24 and 30 frames. Others, including Panasonic and Canon have much more fully developed touch screen systems that include menu navigation, settings adjustment, etc. I do recommend a hands-on experience.
      There is an EVF "touch pad" feature. Overall, I'm finding responsiveness to be about the same - none are great, for focus only, I think Sony's, as implemented on the A7 III) is my preferred. I will try to get a full review in and cover those points.
      So, finally, thanks for your time, your kind words and your subscription, all are appreciated. I'll look forward to more of your comments.

      Do you think Fuji might eventually address this issue via a firmware update? Can this even be fixed via a firmware update? Maybe their internal processing engine might not be up to par to handle 4K @ 24 or 30fps possibly.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому

      Good question, as well as the suggestion that it's a processor issue. I think that answers the question - that this is indeed a low-powered processor that can't handle 4K 24frames. Note that it also can't handle processing an X-Trans sensor. That's the price of entry level.

    This camera reminds me of the Canon 550D. They also called it a entry level/beginners camera but people put a good lens on it and took pictures that you could not tell apart from pictures taken with so called professional cameras.
    Sure, it might be a bit slower and less efficient in terms of layout but in the right hands it's more than capable of taking great images....

      Not sure why you need to diminish pro cameras with the sobriquet "so-called". They are professional because the bodies are designed for continual daily use under all kinds of conditions and their controls and features are designed for photographers who know their craft and don't necessarily appreciate frills.
      That said, there are many terrific cameras out there, and most of them, in the right hands and with the right lighting can produce excellent pictures. And there are some bargains out there - like the X-T100.

    • @frankkoenig1411
      @frankkoenig1411 5 років тому

      @@MaartenHeilbron I didn't mean to diminish pro cameras. I just wanted to make the point that you don't necessarily need a pro camera to produce professional looking pictures and that the term "entry level/beginners" camera in this regard is missleading...

    Hey Maarten, great video once again. Loved it!
    A few months back I asked you if I should get a Sony A6000 or an A5100. You suggested the A6000, and I am very, very happy with that purchase. Thanks!
    Today, I seek your advice on upgrading from the kit lens. Shall I get the SEL 35mm f1.8 or something else completely? It has OSS (no IBS in A6000, sad face), a large aperture, and I guess 35mm is pretty versatile for APS-C cameras.

      These are good questions for an in-depth review. I find the image quality about the same, but with the difference that the Bayer sensor brings - a different colour profile, less contrasty. I don't know about the AA filter - didn't find a reference in the documentation, so suspect there will be one - as it's the omission that's notable.

    Nice video! I like Fuji and I like this camera. Still, I do get a little chuckle out of all of those menu items and features that seem like they would take about as long to go through in some cases as just learning actual photography skills. Even for beginners. And especially since half of that stuff did not end up saved in a RAW file, which a lot of people will one day realize they wish they had.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому

      Thanks for the kind words. I think you're rushing to judgement. Many of those settings (and Sony is much more guilty of this than Fuji) do help with photography by providing settings that can be a benefit, or suit a specific kind of shooting. They enable you to customize and personalize, so that if you like a specific colour treatment that might be associated with one brand or model, you can create a duplicate of that in another. I find that valuable.
      And while I completely agree with you on the RAW file issue, there aren't many features here (like Panorama or HDR) that don't save RAW.

    • @tw9535
      @tw9535 6 років тому

      Sounds fair enough. And like I said, I really do like Fuji. I guess from the video it was those post-shooting focus features and the video burst where you choose a frame of video to save as a still image that I gathered were not being saved in RAW, either. With the former, someone could just focus stack themselves using actual RAW files, and with the latter just timing the action and using whatever still image burst rate was available to, again, save in RAW.
      Maybe I misunderstood the video. Or those features.
      Either way, Fuji could be in my future one day for sure. But right now I am still giving Nikon a little more time to come out with their mirrorless alternatives. In the meantime, I shoot everything with D500... and that thing is going to have to be PRIED out of my hand.
      Thanks for all of your generous work!! Like a lot of people, I always check your channel for new camera reviews. Always.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому

      They start out as 4Mp (or so) video files, so, yes you're correct, no RAW there either. And only 7Mp to boot. If you're prepared to focus stack, then you'll be better off, but for in-camera work (and if 7Mp suits your needs) this is a nice solution. Panasonic innovated this feature, after all, if you can record 30 frames of video (or 15 in Fuji's case) you have a pretty good burst mode.

    • @tokyojerry
      @tokyojerry 6 років тому

      If all those menu items, features, you feel are too excessive, and you prefer not to have minute and detailed control over settings, there is always the iA (Intelligent Auto) you can select. ( I reckon on the Fuji cameras it SR+ ?) It's for those people that don't want to do any thing more with photographic creativity and only want to press the power button, the shutter button, and voilà! There's my photo. ;-)

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому +1

      I completely agree. I often have photographers, who are using an auto mode ask me how to take full advantage of their camera. I tell them that they're doing it in auto mode - switch to the priority or manual modes and the camera is taking advantage of you (which could be a good thing under some circumstances).

      Can you wait until next week? My M50 review should be done by then. As a generalization, Fuji x lenses are superior to Canon m lenses - that would be the basis for my decision.

    Sir 🙏! I'm from Mumbai, India. Is it possible to set back button focusing in X-T100 which I recently purchased?

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      Unless they sell a different model in Mumbai, there's no button on the back to which AF-On can be assigned. However, please do say hello to all my friends in Mumbai, including Amit.

    How easy or efficient to edit in Lightroom, i.e. do not need Iridient software to edit RAW images, a problem with the X-Trans sensor. Seems this traditional Bayer array will be better handled in LR.

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      The X-T100 has a Bayer sensor.

      Maarten Heilbron I meant to say Bayer filter array

    • @tokyojerry
      @tokyojerry 6 років тому

      From what I understand, bayer sensor (filter array) should be OK for post production. It's when you introduce RAW data taken with a Fuji camera having X-Trans sensor that you run into problems for post production.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому +1

      Most software - Lightroom, Phase One - now support X-Trans, but there's always Fuji's own (free) RAW processing.

    I'm interested to buy this camera. but a lot is saying they have severe rolling shutters. What do you think?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 років тому +1

      That's true here, as it is of most cameras, particularly in this price range.
      I would suggest that it's an effect that you will rarely observe - unless you do a lot of fast pans across vertical objects.
      I have yet to find a camera where it bothered me in actual shooting.
      However, if that's your need, you will need to spend several times more than you would for the X-T100.

    For whom is this camera for? I have X-T20 that I like pretty much. The two features that bring my attention it's the adjustable LCD and the way that transfer the picture. Sir can you tell me it's using the same software for transfer the picture and it's only WiFi? Thanks

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому +1

      I think this camera is for anyone who's thinking they'd like to take better photos than their mobile phone delivers. If you have an X-T20, please don't give this one another thought. It's not. The bluetooth maintains an always on connection that activates the wifi to transfer pictures as they're taken. Maybe that will come as a software upgrade?

    • @tokyojerry
      @tokyojerry 6 років тому

      This is a point of interest for me and a feature I would like to know more about. The Panasonic G9 theoretically has this same function but it seems I am not implementing it properly, or it does not work. I tend to think the former. What I understand is, with Bluetooth connection on, as I take photos with the G9 (or I assume same with X-T100) the camera data (photos and video clips both?) are supposed to transfer real time to the smart phone for editing and social network uploading. Does the Fuji X-T100 wait until the camera is turned off and then begins to transfer? If so, then how do the photos transfer in an off state? Or, do the photos transfer to the smart phone real time while taking photos with the X-T100? This is a feature I am very interested in as there are times when a photo I can not take with the smartphone but can with the camera, I want to be able to transfer from camera to smart phone to edit and distribute. Cheers.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому

      I can't speak to the G9, but on the X-T100, the bluetooth connection signals that there are new photos and switches to wifi. I didn't test on Android, but with iOS, you may have to switch the wifi connection to the camera's. When it's connected, photos are transferred as they are taken - or when the connection is made marked photos are transferred. If there are still photos to transfer, the camera goes to sleep, but does turn off until the transfer is completed. Hope this helps.

      I've just been given the final firmware, so I can start a real review. Any details you need to know that I should include? For the X-H1, it's in progress, but by the time camera and grip arrived, decided to wait for the firmware update to finalize. I'm finding it a bit glitchy, so hope the update fixes that.

    Quick question: is it possible to configure the Q button for back button AF?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 років тому

      Quick answer: The Q button can't be customized. The only custom button is the Fn button, which has an "Instant AF" selection, which seems to do the job when in manual focus. It's a bit awkward in placement. And holding it down triggers its ability to reset the customization.
