  • Correct thread tension is what creates stitches that look identical on both sides of the fabric. This video will explain how to properly set the tension for sewing different fabrics so you can easily achieve a great looking stitch.

It's videos like this that sold me on the Ultrafeed machine for marine canvas work. Thanks, Sailrite!

I would like a video on setting bottom (bobbin) tension. I just got my machine back from a factory service which is very expensive because of shipping. The first thing I did was check how they set the tension. It was significantly tighter than common wisdom for setting bobbin tension.
Other videos say "you don't need to worry about setting it... but obviously stick quality is highly dependant on dealing this tension in properly. It seems to me that if the tension is too light, the thread will float on top of the fabric. Of course--if fabric floating above the surface of the fabric is caused by another issue... please include that .

I'm so glad I saw this video! I just started to put my LSZ-1 together (after letting it sit in the corner for over a year, untouched) and I discovered what was wrong with the old machine I threw away. Simple adjustments. Now with this new one I can do all the projects that I am planning. Sailboat rebuild, sail making, furniture rebuild and upholstery, light leather work but first new cushions for the mission chair I made. Great video. Thanks. It's also nice that I live only 15 miles from your shop.

Wish there had been an example of too loose and too tight lower bobbin thread to show how to trouble shoot between top and bottom adjustments.

  • @elconquistador932

Do you ever have a situation where the tension seems too high on upper thread (showing knots on top stitch) but as soon as you back it off a hair it then loops on top? Bottom looks good.
I've swapped needles (#18), and replaced the spring cap on bobbin carrier assembly as well as clean and oil the assembly. I'm using a V69 Poly thread, 18 needle on 500D cordura. Acts the same w 600D Ottertex or a combination of the 2.
I'm leaning towards a cheap chinese thread as the culprit, don't seem to be an issue when I use a Bonded nylon v69 T70 thread, same set up as above.
Thanks for all of your help.
    EDIT: LSZ1

So why did you not show the symptoms when the bobbin leaf spring is too loose or too tight. On my other home use sewing machine the directions were to hold the thread and snap it with a downward motion similar to using a yo-yo. It should spool out about 4 inches of thread. Is this a good rule of thumb for the lsz1?

    “Righty-tightie. Lefty-loosie.”
Turning the dial (or most screws) clockwise, or to the right, tends to tighten things. Turning counter clockwise (to the left) will loosen.

Can someone please confirm (because I don't want to mess up my settings too much), counterclockwise loosens the pressure foot tension and clockwise tightens? Righty tighty lefty loosey? This is not spelled out in the manual (unless I overlooked it). Thanks!

So much help on this video. I bought the ls1 4 months ago and each time I do the sewing i can see knots on both sides especially when am sewing two layers of ripstop fabric or any other thick fabric. Does this mean that both tensions are ok? From Africa Zambia!!

True, if the knot is on the top and bottom side and you are working with a very light weight fabric, like ripstop, then tension is probably correct. However, switching to a lighter thread and needle may keep the knot in the center of the thin assembly.

Easy to resolve... Simply roll the balance wheel towards you until the take up arm is on its way up and is almost at its highest position up. Now, the loop of thread which was moving around the bobbin is released. No more third string when removing fabric from machine.
