The only USB drive one need is one with VENTOY installed that allows you to directly boot in all your ISO stored on the same USB key.
include STRELEC ISO and you're good to go.
But I personally use an external SSD.

For me, I just need something to lock all of my folders and files with a password and not some broken encryption that'll screw me over eventually when the password gets corrupted, or some idiotic vault that'll do the same. I got close today when I found Lock-A-Folder. It only works for Windows, but it'll hold me over until I find one for Windows 11 Home and Android.

@@Britec09 Genuinely curious why not? Ventoy is great, allows you to have multiple images on one large USB. Including Hirens which i use all the time at work. It also makes updating the images easy as it's just delete one ISO and copy the new one

I love Hiren's and have for many years. Just a suggestion, I also use Rufus to create a Windows 11 boot flash for installation rather than the Windows Media Creation Tool. When Rufus set up recognizes the ISO is for Windows some very handy switches can be set. For example to create a local account automatically.

Great information, Thanks. I have one big small request though if you may, can you demo in full detail how do I install, run, and operate Linux and windows on a windows laptop. I have seen many youtubers but they do not provide information in great detail as you may have guessed I am not a computer nerd, I just learn by watching videos but sometimes I get stuck in process. I will understand if you do not want to do it but if you can, it will be highly appreciable. Thanks.

I would call for caution when buying any electronics from Amazon. A lot of bad actors there and you might not get what you thought you bought. Now I only buy flash drives or anything sensitive like this from a reputable shop, ideally in person. Even from Currys I thought I bought 64 gb USB drive, it said 64 on the package when it arrived, 64 on the USB itself, but it only was 32 gb. I bought it in their online shop and it was Sandisk. I also bought one like shown in this video, the 128gb, a couple years ago, on Amazon, it did seem to have that memory but something fishy was about it. Getting very hot, my radio/cd/mp3 player was skipping tracks on it when I tried to play music from the usb, and a month ago it locked itself as write protected suddenly, despite I used it days ago to store some data on it, without any such attempt from my side or any physical switch to lock it. Hammer dealt with it as I was unable to format it or anything. Youu often get what you pay for.

Wanted to trim an external SSD in Linux but couldn't. I was able to do so with Hirens and running a USB with PortableApps version of SmartDefrag. One thing, the new Hirens BootCD PE based on 11 doesn't boot on Win11 non supported systems, and creating with Rufus can't get the workaround for writing Hirens ISO. It boots up, but I get an iaStorE.sys blue screen and it reboots to a black screen. Tried to re-download the 1.0.2 version of Hirens through Github, but the hash didn't match, so I can't use it. Still have an ISO for 1.0.1 though.

Good video, however, I think the SAMSUNG BAR Plus 256GB - 400MB/s USB 3.1 Flash Drives are the way to go. Much, much faster and have a lot more room. That way if you want you can do persistence Linux it can be fast. I've only ever done it with YUMI though as it's easier. Never with VENTOY though which for regular USB ISO's is great. I need to figure out the persistence Linux with VENTOY though. They also make really, really smaller ones that do 400MB/s also but they are too hard to pull out, like a flush Logitech Unifying Receiver.

I think it is important even for a lot of Linux users to have the Win PE version of the aforementioned USB drive. If you ever have formatted a drive in NTFS on Windows and then accessed it on Linux you may get an error that sometimes can be fixed with NTFSFIX on Linux, but is sometimes easier to fix by just booting into Windows to fix it. (It is often caused by fastboot being enabled on Windows when creating the partition, but can just be corruption) . There are other times when you can't do a task easier in Linux than Windows and sometimes cannot be done in Linux, like using Rufus to get to the advanced options for creating a Windows installation drive. There are sometimes long and convoluted ways to do the same thing in Linux but, having the drive just makes like easier.

What I really want to see is a UEFI setting that will scan all USB ports for a bootable partion and if nothing if found THEN scan the HHDs & SSDs.
This IS NOT the way most motherboards work.
This allows a system to always check for a bootable USB stick, a Bootable USB storage drive or a Optical drive.
Usually if a motherboard is set to boot from USB and there is no USB bootable partition found, the system just fails to boot until either a USB bootable partition is added or the UEFI serring it changed.
I want this for my workstation.
What most people forget is that if someone has physical access to your computer, they can just take it and then move the storage to a different computer to then bypass any O/S security it has.
The only thing that can stop this scenario is to totally encrypt the storage using a separate hardware token like a Yubikey.
If you need to have a system to use for computer repairs, build a cheap one that is totally unsecured.
A linux/BSD UNIX system with a copy of windows running in a VM is the best way to do this.
Most hardware hacking/repairs do NOT require MS Windows and anything that does can then be run in the VM.
I wish I could find a persistent installation of MS windows to run from a USB stick so I could just insert a Linux stick, a Nomad stick or a MS O/S stick into a Rpi 5 sized motherboard and then just power cycle the machine to whichever stick I need to use.
I'm a 64 yo retired UNIX System Administrator / Custom Software Developer from the age a UNIX Mini Computers.
I used to carry around in my kit a complete list of all the MFM harddrive settings for all the makes & models of HDDs that were on the market back in the mid 80s onward.
That was until PATA completely replaced the MFM drives.
Now try to find a controller card that would allow a PATA drive to be added to a modern system.
I only know of USB based solutions to that issue.
I have over a 100 fully operational MFM & PATA HHDs left that I'm still slowly coping to optical discs.

This problem I see with ALL content creators doing these kinds of Instructional Videos: You start by downloading Hiren's and Rufus, but the instructions are sketchy and incomplete. Then you create Windows Installation media by selecting Win 11 and your next screen shows you downloading Win 10 installation media. There was never a mention of whether or not you switched USB drives (i.e. did you put Rufus and Hiren's USB aside and insert a new flash drive for the Win installation media?). Next, without any intro, you immediately jump back to showing Hiren's on the desktop. (Did you put the Win installation USB aside and re-insert and reboot with Hirens?). This is typical instruction for ALL rescue disk videos of this type. Is there any consideration for people who have never done this and may not have the knowledge to understand what you're actually doing? Sorry to be so critical, but..... what are you doing?

All that you are doing is just taking up space getting something from 3rd party that Microsoft already has built into Windows.

When he was talking about Ventoy, he was talking about a means to put both tools on the one USB stick which is fine.
Personally, I've found it more reliable to have two separate USB sticks, and you have to update them periodically when new versions of Hiren's or Windows come out. Do it at least annually if not every six months.
