Teochew
Native to: China, Overseas Chinese communities
Region: Eastern Guangdong (Chaoshan), Southern Fujian (Zhao'an)
Ethnicity: Han Chinese (Teochew people)
Language family: Sino-Tibetan
is a dialect of Chaoshan Min, a Southern Min language, that is spoken by the Teochew people in the Chaoshan region of eastern Guangdong and by their diaspora around the world. It is sometimes referred to as Chiuchow, its Cantonese rendering, due to the English romanisation by colonial officials and explorers. It is closely related to some dialects of Hokkien, as it shares some cognates and phonology with Hokkien, although the two are not largely mutually intelligible.
Teochew preserves many Old Chinese pronunciations and vocabulary that have been lost in some of the other modern varieties of Chinese. As such, many linguists consider Teochew one of the most conservative Chinese languages.

I am Teochew and I am from Vietnam, I love Teochew and I speak it in my family
My dad side of the family is Chinese-Cambodian and they speak Teochew. When I was little I was able to speak some basic phrases and sentences but now I forgot how to speak it.
OMG but I'm not fluent now, this is my first language but I forgot it because I study Khmer and English too much but I still speak it nowadays

It's also a community language among Chinese people in Saigon, Vietnam. In Vietnamese it's called tiếng Tiều or more properly tiếng Triều Châu.

Most of Thai Chinese are descendants of Teochew from Swatow (Shantou) in Guangdong incl. the King Taksin of Thonburi. Modern colloquial Thai language contains bundles of Teochew loanwords. Teochew language, like Hokkien and Hainanese belong to Southern Min dialect group directly evolved from Old Chinese while others evolved from later Middle Chinese. Teochew people can be found in all regions of Thailand, especially the Central region incl. Bangkok, except the South where the Hokkiens and Peranakans (Malay Hokkiens) form a majority. Hakka, Cantonese and Hainanese people can also be found in many urbanized area in Thailand but much less than the Teochews. Unfortunately, new generations of Thai Chinese can’t speak their ancestor’s languages anymore due to absolute integration into Thai society. Only older generations can speak Chinese.
Northern Thailand is the only region which has the mountain-dwelling Yunnanese (called ‘Haw’ in Northern Thai dialect) who migrated by land with mules. They are not oversea Chinese and speak Southwestern Mandarin.
Most of Thai Chinese People descend from Teochew - speaking Chinese People. Even there are few people today who can speak Teochew, most of them are the elders, many Teochew lonewords are used in Thai Language such as "อั๊ว Ua" or "I" or "ลื้อ Lue" or "You". Since most of Thai Chinese People are Teochew. Many TV shows always depict the Thai with Chinese Descent in Movies or Dramas by using the Teochew lonewords. Some of them have a long conversations in Teochew.
A few words are different from Teochew spoken in Thailand, for example we don't say 諸娘 for woman but 查某，not 洗浴 for bath but 灇浴，possibly we were influenced by Hokkien in the diaspora. Oh！we rarely call the English language 英語 but 紅毛話，especially among older Teochew speakers 😂 Anyway，I can understand almost everything he says without reading the text on the screen.
Ang mo ue / 紅毛話 is most referred to many European languages i.e english, french, spanish, portugese...
@@anameidonthave7957 No, for Teochew speakers in SEA, it only means English. Old Teochew immigrants didn't care much about different European countries.

Yes, it is Swatow Ue. WHY? First it says 乞 keh4 and in Teochew they would say bung1 分. Secondly, it says in2zoin5 以前 and Teochew would say gu7si5 舊時

My parents are both teo chew from Saigon and raise my siblings and I in California in this dialect. I was sad at first because no one around me spoke this dialect but today I’m a proud teo chew and happy to at least share the language. I just had a daughter and decided to speak teo chew to her to carry down our language and identity. Im also working on my teo chew so I won’t forget how to speak it! Thanks for this video! I can understand majority of that story 🙏
Both my father and mother are Teochew descendants, but only a few of the relatives used Teochew, and none of Today understand a word. However, my mother's family whose ancestors emigrated more recent to Thailand still uses some words and phrases in the family. To be honest, it is one of my regrets that I wasn't raised by older people who used the language.

Both of my parents came from shantou. I can understand and speak teo chew. There are many shops and people can speak teo chew in the cabramatta Sydney Australia. Mainly They come from Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. I visited many countries and I generally greeted people in teo chew first and if they don't understand then I will greet them in Cantonese, mandarin and English last even though I don't really speak Cantonese well and I can't speak mandarin at all. 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅

Coming from a Chaozhou/ half Japanese person, there was a weird translation for ‘woman’. It’s pronounced ‘zha bou’!

Interesting, 8 tones quite different From putonghua
As a fluent Cantonese/Mandarin speaker, I can hear semblances in some words but mostly it all sounds like Vietnamese/Thai/Malay to me. Which if you think about it geographically and historically speaking, it absolutely makes sense. With globalization however, all of these dialects are on their way out the door. I predict in about 100 years, there will only be national/regional languages and extremely sparse dialects.

No. It is Mainland-China Swatow accent. Teochew has alot of variants and different accent, like Pou Leng and Chao'an etc. Just like Foshanese and Taishanese are Cantonese but different variants
Ok it sounds like the Teochew we speak here in Singapore BUT the reason why we know he's not Singaporean is when he pronounced 'English' as Ing Guh. In Singapore, the Hokkiens and Teochews refer to English as "红毛" or Ang Moh

As a mandarin speaker, Teochew as is spoken in this video reminds me of Thai. The tone sounds similar to me.
You might think that because Thai has a lot of loan words from Teochew as there is a huge diaspora of Teochew people in the region.

Could you please do a comparison between teochew and hokkien. I understand that they are both Southern min Chinese dialects. They are not mutually intelligible but share some common features.

You speak with an accent which sounded like Teoyeo. The Teoyeo people speaks Teochew with an accent peculiar to them.

This is a phenomenon in the Southern Min language called literary and colloquial readings.
My understanding is that zêg is more colloquial and ig is more literary.

When they started to read that little story I (a native Cantonese speaker) tried to understand it from the Chinese text, to no avail, and I had to resort to the English translation.

Teochew from Kalimantan and Cambodia sound very different from this.
My grandpa used to be able to speak Teochew as a Chinese Indonesian! Unfortunately he forgot most of it after living in Hong Kong for more than 70 years, and only speaks Cantonese now.
I hope you can revive taiwanese hokkien too!!!! Oh and sanskrit😅

Si or some variation of it is yes in most forms of Chinese, but to be honest, it doesn't mean yes, it's the verb 'to be'
