to have those days back with my mother listening to Ms. Vaughn. So thankful I have these memories.. At an early age my mother, (Ms. Jazz herself), shared all the greats with me. Being able to access and enjoy these videos is awesome.
Pure magic was Sarah Vaughan in concert always...sublime performance of Misty always one of the many show-stoppers and this legend is the greatest voice ever...from small to large venues, this lady was a stunner...Bravo Sarah!
comparing ella and sarah is just not right. they're both different. ella is known for her exquisite scat singing while sarah known for her tone and her interpretation in lyric. they are the best in their own way.
Wikipedia says she died in April 1990 so if 1990 is the year of this performance it was done during the time she was receiving chemotherapy, not more than a few months before she died. Thank you for posting.
I am so damn lucky - The Divine One actually sang this beautiful tune to me at the Blue Note in Chicago ... way back when! It's in my book Southside Kid which you can google or take a peek at Amazon. Curt
This is not 1990. She passed in 1990. I saw her last performance. She looked nothing like this. She looked very different from this. She did, however, sound the same...beautiful as a bird!
Can't believe that Sarah died the same year of this performance because of lung cancer. DAMN! No sign of illness in that voice...just an aged vintage instrument that's been used extensively. BUT STILL maintained the SARAH essence. She's my new musical idol!!!!!!!!
She made me want be a Jazzsinger, after I discovered her voice. although I listened to other Jazz Vocalists years before. I love 3:54 "On my own" lol :) Sarah, please send me some signs from up above because I feel you as you were right next to me, whenever I'm listening to you. I love you.
@jiedeng18 She's better than Ella. Ella is incredibly clever in her scatting, but Sarah is passionate and soulful. Her music effects the listener emotionally. Other than Nancy Wilson, I've never heard anything like it.
Gosh! I'm a tenor and she reaches a note almost as low as one of my lowest notes. And she sings with such humour and playfulness! Only Sarah makes me laugh while singing. She's miraculous and joyful!
She is just simply one of the best soulful jazz singer that I love though am just came to know her from her singing on the Beatles' '' Somehing " ... RIP Ma'am
what a great legacy and a great treasure your mom shared wiht ya and i think its a part of your culture too,be proud of it.enjoy it as much as you can.
Incredible, amazing, sensual, just perfect. THANK YOU for uploading. This is one of the (many) reasons I love You Tube and people's generousity with taking their time to share something wonderful with the rest of the world.
Gnic3 Misty vocal comparison ,Sarah Vaughn,Dakota Staton,....Johnnny Mathis...?Joe Williams....et al. It sure would be nice to make a comparison Misty album.
This is just plain spot on perfect. A superb performance, and I appreciate the Erroll Garner inspired treatment by the pianitst. She puts the soulful passion into the song that so many other vocalists miss. Nothing like classic jazz at its best.
I just love how rich her lower register was.
Then... POP back up to the high.
*squeals* I wish I was alive to appreciate her.

I agree. As she got older, her sound got more and more interesting. She didn't burn out like a lot of singers did, she got better and better.
Divine. I saw Sarah live twice and cried
through much of the performances. One
of the greatest voices of the twentieth
century
If Sarah isn't the female Barry White!
I LOVE her!
What a beautiful range her voice is..you feel it in your spine!!!!
I never could get enough of this song.
this concert was taken in 1985 in tokyo, sarah died five years later. you can find a dvd with this performance "live at satin doll, tokyo 85"
You're wrong. Sarah took this show in 1985 in Tokio (unfortunately vhs is hard to find and there's no dvd). She died 5 years later.

I know the feeling of wishing to have been there but I find your post hilarious!
Ella, Sarah, Billie, Dinah Washington, Peggy Lee. These are the greatest female singers of the Great American Song Book.

@jiedeng18 she's better than ella. more feeling, more musical. ella is still absolutely amazing though
My absolutly favourite jazz voice :)
privilegiada BELLISIMA
I think this is not 1990, she died on the 4th April that same year and she was very skinny when she died. Here she looks very healthy.
She made me want be a Jazzsinger, after I discovered her voice. although I listened to other Jazz Vocalists years before. I love 3:54 "On my own" lol :) Sarah, please send me some signs from up above because I feel you as you were right next to me, whenever I'm listening to you. I love you.

@50sVintage This show was done in 1985 (vhs of it issued in 1990). Her last concert was in 1989.
She is just simply one of the best soulful jazz singer that I love though am just came to know her from her singing on the Beatles' '' Somehing " ... RIP Ma'am

03.53 loool , love how Sarah does "on mu own" like a baby cat or so hahaha, seemed to have a damn good sense for humour :)
the divine one. my dad's favorite . both are gone now but still in my heart forever.
The Greatest Female Vocalist of the 20th Century, and one of best at The Great American Songbook.
Yeah pbuzz,
Sarah was the absolute best the Gods had to offer, a true musical genius.

Incredible, amazing, sensual, just perfect. THANK YOU for uploading. This is one of the (many) reasons I love You Tube and people's generousity with taking their time to share something wonderful with the rest of the world.
I wish the black queens of singing took better care of themselves.
What a voice - and like Ella, incredibly strong all their lives.
She is the only person to come close to being as good as Ella.
how low can she go???????!!!!
Yes she recorded songs singing from her sick bed.
magnificent!!! so deep
@yo5073 privilegiada BELLISIMA

Great performance!
I enjoyed it very much.
I didn't know Erroll Garner wrote Misty. Great times.
Gnic3 Misty vocal comparison ,Sarah Vaughn,Dakota Staton,....Johnnny Mathis...?Joe Williams....et al. It sure would be nice to make a comparison Misty album.

I like her so very much...the great voice
I heartily concur with your observation(s).

This is just plain spot on perfect. A superb performance, and I appreciate the Erroll Garner inspired treatment by the pianitst. She puts the soulful passion into the song that so many other vocalists miss. Nothing like classic jazz at its best.
