Captain Q and Randy, First of all, I can tell the love you have for each other! Almost like a father and son. It is obvious to me that Captain Q's passion for sailing was given to Randy. Earlier in my life, I sailed but only small boats on a lake. I enjoy watching your videos because it causes me to think about picking up the habit again. Again, GREAT videos.
Captain Q, I can’t thank you enough for providing this channel for learning. I’ve only owned Lasers (well, and one Santana :-) but am looking at something to live aboard and sail in the Pacific NW - your wisdom is really appreciated as a newcomer to bigger water vessels.
Just found your channel yesterday and have binge watched every episode. I love the banter between Captain Q and Ran-Day. I am in the market to purchase my first sailboat and look forward to learning more about them from your channel.
Captain Q. Thank you for your entertaining and brilliant explanations. My goal is to learn as much as I can about sailboats so your show is invaluable.
Very nice review. I just found your channel and was enjoying the various reviews when this - a boat I know very well showed up. I have worked on and sailed on Hurrah in the Chesapeake, Maine and to and in the Caribbean. The Stevens 47 is a great boat and Hurrah is a very well taken care of example. She is a great boat!!!
I just found your show . I really like the boats that you show. I have just turn 65 and I am looking for a boat to sail an learn to sail the right way ,the more I witch the more I learn . I am hoping for a 35 ft. or 45 ft. Center clock pit below 39,000 . Again you are very helpful don't stop cap.

A friend of mine and I sailed his Hylas 44 through out the Philippines and elsewhere in the South China Sea. Great quality .Even in heavy weather you always felt secure. I'm sure the Stevens 47 is the same.
That sounds pretty dreamy! it's such a spacious boat and a great adventure platform for short-handed crews or a big family - and to know the Hylas can be had for about 1/2 the price is a nice inside secret. Was the center cockpit wet in the heavy seas?
@@YachtHunters We have just finished a 36,000nm, seven year loop of the Pacific and the cockpit was fine. Any of the waves that did enter the cockpit came from astern or abead and would have been worse in an aft cockpit.
As always, great tour Cap! From the looks of the drawings, the space behind the aft bed, under the reverse transom looks to be empty dead space. If it were at all possible, I'd probably try and cut a couple of swim steps and a shallow swim platform into it. Would make dinghy boarding so much easier and safer. No idea why this wasn't standard with reverse transoms of the era.
I believe they've filled that space with two lazarets - one of which is sealed off for the propane tanks - in which case you'd have to give up some storage. Could be worth the trade off depending on where you plan on cruising. On my last boat, we had a small folding ladder that attached to the midship toerail that worked well.
Captain Q, This is Captain Mark. I sailed my 37 Hunter Cherubini on Lake Champlain in the 1980 and 90's. If you have never considered it, why not try the Shelburne Shipyard and look at some cool boats!
Beautiful boat and as mentioned seems tailor made for its new owners and their needs. Can't believe how roomy it is below and will allow the kids to distance themselves from each other when needed. A vital detail when its a famalies home ....
If you buy through a broker, expect much higher prices. As the boomers die off and and multiple hurricanes have scared many people off the waters, the boat yards are overflowing with great deals, if you buy from the owners.
Captain Q where did you get all those nice sweaters? My Mom knit me a Fisherman’s knit sweater, almost 50 years ago , I still have it. I think she knit 25 in total. Please tell us the story behind those sweaters. Nice boat, family cruiser.
@@YachtHunters i don't have a large family and have search for compatible people to join me to no avail. So therefore I need something big enough to cross the Atlantic and bounce down to the Caribbean myself. With all lines leading to the cockpit for safety.
Hi Captain Q, I'm from Hither but haven't seen you around? I love your videos, your knowledge of boating terms is incredible! 7000 years of sailing vessels have created a plethora of terminology and you've got it covered! I have a question...I've noticed some rub strakes are really high off the surface of the boat. It makes me wonder is the designer was looking for some amount of lift caused by water hitting the rub strake mostly it the front. If you see the boat in heavy water you'll notice water hitting it, and it must create some amount of lift...wouldn't you think? Maybe not. Random fact...the upward force of the exhaust stream on a top fuel rail drag car creates 600lbs of down force, that's why sometimes when the engine cuts out, the car will be uncontrollable. Rub strake...lift?
I really don't think they thought of getting lift . The primary reason was saving the hull from barnacle laced dock dolphins . Actually i think they put them as high as possible thinking that the early boats designed to take an early heel to 15-25 degrees would keep them OUT of the water and thus eliminating any drag .. but yours is an interesting thought though if valid racers would be covered with them thank you

Unbelievable that they got it for under 6 figures! Just marvelous. Each space was nicer than the last as you moved along the tour. Very excited for the new owners. PS is there a story behind the trademark Capt Q hat?
I was going to ask this as well. From what I’ve read of Hylas’, assuming the interior is the same, the headroom is 6’3” which would put a proper kink in my neck :(. I love these boats otherwise!
Just curious why they'd do the davit reduction rather than offering as a "go-with" on sale of the boat. Agree they're not attractive, but seem like a good idea? Maybe not a good idea that works out, but seems like a future owner may actually want them? So just how low 6-figure price is that anyway?
@@YachtHunters She's a great boat. A true KP though, not a Formosa or one of the non-QueenLong 44's. These boats were some of the best boats ever to come out of that great yard - beautifully built and fantastic sailers. 180 nm days are possible on passage.
Also, my opinion on the passage to the aft cabin. The KP-46 has a passage with similar headroom but without the bending of the neck required on this boat. However, our passage is only about 30" wide, which means in a seaway you are always secure. I would be concerned about being rolled into that bunk while trying to pass through on a starboard tack.

I love your channel, but I'm confused by this one. Is she for sale? Also, it would be great if you could talk about the quality of the sails and tell us more about the available instrumentation in your videos.
Keen eye, Jonathan....this one is not for sale.... it's a special boat that belongs to a family member and mountaineer, Mark Synnott. He agreed to let us crawl over this new addition to his family as he starts to get her ready for some serious off-shore adventures over the next few years. We'll definitely see what we can do to access the sails... often times they are bundled up for the off-season.... engines & electronics are a little tricky too but we'll see what we can do.... thanks for the suggestion - much appreciated!!
What w\s the closing price ? That will help to value other boats. It's most helpful to get an idea of funds needed. It's great to hear your fixer-upper comments too! Cheers,....
Good point! When we are allowed to , we will disclose selling price but that is not the case here but it was below ask of 120K remember cash is king ...and offers are the queen ( i just made that up haahah but it sort of fits ) Pay only what you can afford and enough not to loose the boat of your dreams thank you..
Info to purchase boats we review is located in the description - either the broker or seller.... in this case the boat was purchased recently by a family member. so it's not for sale. Otherwise, check out Sailboatdata.com for detailed specs on the boat - a 1982 Stevens 47
The shape reminds me of a contessa 32 i know , stable, fast and seaworthy. Nearly 50 years old More beautiful with age . Shes overtaken new boats twice her size .
Unfortunately, she’s not on the market... but she is a member of the family and she sails wonderfully. Highly recommend the Stevens or Hylas (if you want a fancier finish)
Are they imperial or metric? Yes. Well, unless you're taking pipe threads, but let's not get into that. Also, nautical miles are neither imperial or metric. Simple, right?
@@burtpowell1344 Not that I have found yet any yet. After eight years I think I have touched every system but then I always find something I haven't replaced yet.
I believe it was a mix of online sources- Yachtworld, Sailboatlistings.com, etc. He also conferred with a few friends in the Annapolis area and he was quite focused on this particular model so that made it somewhat easier.
I have serious issues concerning the seaworthiness of this vessel. It showed no signs of either Freixenet, nor any Dinti Moore, aboard. I've heard plenty of stories of vessels not being able to circumnavigate their own home port, let alone, sail to the far ends of the Earth, without those two necessities on board.
We always hope that the surveyors will pick up on this sort of problem when they discover these boats certainly it is critical and nothing to be scoffed at or overlooked and it’s a surveyor hands in his bill and there’s no discussion of it I don’t think the buyer should pay the entire bill
This one was purchased by a family member so not for sale.... but we did use our little channel as an excuse to crawl all over her. I believe the asking price when it was for sale was around $120k USD

I have a friend with a Hylas 47 and no doubt this is a very nice blue water cruising yacht. I think it's some point you might want to introduce your viewers to basic yacht parameters that are indicators of performance and comfort (Displ/L, SA/Disp, Ballast/Disp, comfort ratio, etc). Saying a boat is "very fast" doesn't really provide an adequate point of reference. An easy way to deal with this is to simply make PHRF rating comparisons of similar boats. You could put up a simply plot or table. The Stevens/Hylas is a decent performer but it's heavy with a lot of wetted surface. It's not going to be very quick under 8 knots of wind but that isn't what it was designed for. On a close reach in 20 knots the boat comes into its own with all that waterline. Thanks for taking the time to do these reviews.
is there some reason folks dont want to give the price on these ships and make you jump through hoops to find out how much to make the check out for ????????
This one was off the market as it was purchased by a family member... but we still wanted an excuse to go crawl around it :) If it's for sale, we'll post the price so keep that checkbook handy and get sailing!!

She is absolutely beautiful.
Where can I find info about these boats.
Info to purchase boats we review is located in the description - either the broker or seller.... in this case the boat was purchased recently by a family member. so it's not for sale. Otherwise, check out Sailboatdata.com for detailed specs on the boat - a 1982 Stevens 47
Hello! I enjoy very much your videos. How much for that excellent sailboat?
I think he said just under six figures, so maybe around $95k?
The shape reminds me of a contessa 32 i know , stable, fast and seaworthy. Nearly 50 years old
More beautiful with age . Shes overtaken new boats twice her size .
Cheers for the old boats
HINKLEY ONE FOOTERS 😂😂😂
quackers
@@YachtHunters Very stabile in rough seas with the ability to leave at a moments notice. 🦆
Is it still for sale? How do I find out more?
Unfortunately, she’s not on the market... but she is a member of the family and she sails wonderfully. Highly recommend the Stevens or Hylas (if you want a fancier finish)
Very nice. Do you ever find good cruising Cats to look at?
Cats are on our list but they're harder to come by in New England.... it's high up on our watch-list though! Cheers!
I'd exchange this for my 1987 Tartan 40!!
Anyone know what that cabin cruiser is?
We were at the Hinckley yard.... so be prepared to be dazzled: www.hinckleyyachts.com/models/talarias/talaria-55/
Looking for a boat just like this
just like this ? :hylas 47 or stephens 47
.... I do believe that is known as a "cutter rig" ...
or a double headed sloop
Oh my, so now how am I going to sleep?
count the waves you go over .....
are US boats imperial or metric- I mean things like dimensions of tubing, nuts and bolts, engine fitting s_ that kind of thing?
On a older boat like our Stevens 47 they are a mix of both !
Are they imperial or metric? Yes. Well, unless you're taking pipe threads, but let's not get into that. Also, nautical miles are neither imperial or metric. Simple, right?
At least to my knowledge there are no Whitworth!
@@burtpowell1344 Not that I have found yet any yet. After eight years I think I have touched every system but then I always find something I haven't replaced yet.
How (what search vehicle) did your son in law use to find this boat?
I believe it was a mix of online sources- Yachtworld, Sailboatlistings.com, etc. He also conferred with a few friends in the Annapolis area and he was quite focused on this particular model so that made it somewhat easier.
This is the perfect boat is it still available for sale?
Unfortunately, no... a family member snapped it up and is planning to take her around the world starting in a few years
Is this beauty still available?
She is not… we toured her just after she was purchased by a family member
@@YachtHunters thank you cap'n! She is a beautiful vessel! I'll find my 2nd dream boat eventually!
What is the price of the boat
Sold
What is the asking price?
This one was purchased by a family member so not for sale.... but we did use our little channel as an excuse to crawl all over her. I believe the asking price when it was for sale was around $120k USD
@@YachtHuntersWatched your vids alot and got to say hats off not often someone is just honest . Started watching for your knowledge and will keep watching now that your a normal human :P . Hope your fam friend enjoys the boat , u should do an update video . Take care and keep doing what your doing
@@Badger_IRL well, normal is relative, right? 😉 we will definitely be doing an update.. perhaps under sail in the spring!
Thanks for taking the time to do these reviews.
nearly perfect for me, but 6 feet too long
check in this Thursday for a great value that will get you afloat ....fast :-)
What is the price
this one was purchased by a family member. At the time, the asking price was $120,000 USD
Sold
is there some reason folks dont want to give the price on these ships and make you jump through hoops to find out how much to make the check out for ????????
This one was off the market as it was purchased by a family member... but we still wanted an excuse to go crawl around it :) If it's for sale, we'll post the price so keep that checkbook handy and get sailing!!
@@YachtHunters i do like this one its layed out perfect for me .....
