@@loo6942 actually, he is. His was formally trained as a tenor in a university in Ukraine. There were performance that he demonstrated his profession. That said, what we heard from this reaction video is a more natural voice of his own, very much like a countertenor. But actually he never had a formal training of counter tenor.
@@joyceng2403 I'm not talking about training, I'm talking about his voice type, it sits higher than a tenor. Even if you're not a tenor you could "be trained" as one, though you would still not sound the way a tenor normally would. (This is not the right thing to do, but probably what his teachers went with at that point since he was a guy) I've actually seen his videos in the Ukraine university, I would say it sounds like an alto/mezzo but singing with a technique that's not the one an alto or mezzo would normally use in bel canto
He can sing songs in different genres such as opera, bel canto, pop, rock and rap. He can also sing songs in many languages. His own voice is that of a teenager, but he can naturally switch between the voices of children, young people, middle-aged people, girls, etc. I would recommend his "Time to say goodbye","Golden hour", "China in the light", "The Lonely Goat Herd", "Just like fire", "Think of me" and "Moonlight".

The composer waited 20+ years before he would let anyone perform/record this song. He gave permission to Zhou Shen. It's an outstanding performance. You should see the version from Singer 2020. All of his performances on that show are outstanding. Including the viral Da La Beng Ba where he sings in 5 different voices. Other rap/pop/rock performances include those from the show Sing China where he does duets with other singers. Check out his duet with Liang Long and another with Gai on the same show.. He has done some American song covers including Just Like Fire by Pink but I like his Chinese songs the best.
Zhen Shou, also known as Charlie, first became famous for a song called Big Fish from an animated movie with that title. I watched the whole movie waiting for the song and it was the second of two songs that played at the end of the movie as the credits scrolled. I almost missed it. As a young student, Charlie left China to attend University in Kiev, Ukraine majoring in Dentistry because it was cheaper to go there. He changed is major to voice then came back to China. After his appearance on the Super Vocal Competition he really became even more famous and is still very popular there.
Welcome to Zhou Shen's world. He can sing over 12 languages and use 5 different voices in one song. He graduated in Classical training in Ukraine. If you guys are willing to dig in more about his music. You will be surprised. He is a funny, polite and humble guy even though he is very famous now but he doesn't act arrogant like a lot of singers out there. For my own preference about his voice(s), you can react his “Dalabengba” which over 30M views in youtube! Another one will be “Song of heaven island”, one man horror musical! Besides, fun fact share to you, he just sang Disney song “I am A star” for Disney 100 anniversary movie ‘A wish’. As comment from Disney, Zhou Shen sang 20+ different vocals by himself for this song while original English version was sung by 28 person!

He is 30 now, and is really loved and acclaimed by China's pop music fans of all ages. ShenShen had a rocky road to success, starting with teasing and bullying by teen peers when his voice did not drop at puberty. He did not get accepted to study music at the Chinese university he chose, so his parents sent him to Ukraine to study dentistry. He knew this was not his true path, and turned back to bel canto, training as a leggiero tenor at University of Lviv. In this performance - part of a 2018 Hunan TV reality show spotlighting young men who sing western-style opera and musical theater, a little-appreciated niche in China - Shen sings as a self-taught 16:58 countertenor or sopranist. He struggled with nerves and insecurities throughout the course of the show, but his 35 fellow singers supported him and continued the encouragement after the show ended. I noted that during auditions for that show, the producers expressed surprise that Shen wanted to participate, as he did not need the small exposure the show provided. "Super Vocal" was one of the first playlists containing Shen (singing songs familiar to an English-only speaker who is not proficient with social media - I am old!) that UA-cam suggested for me. Zhou Shen is one of my favorite singer since I discovered him. His voice is beautiful and he can sing anything. He has so many awesome videos that it is hard to pick one. Good luck with that! But yes, we want to see more of Zhou Shen for sure! ❤

As he himself said, he always cries when singing this song, because here he sings not only about the cat that was rejected by the tribe, but also about himself, because he was bullied and rejected because of his exceptional voice. ZhouShen faced tons of haters bcoz of his voice. He failed thru and thru as a dentistry student and changed his major to vocal training. One of the Voice of China’s producers scouted him as he posted singing videos on social media. Despite his amazing performance, his team coach dumped him half way. Then by chance he was invited to do a demo for DaYu(BigFish), and he became singer of the OST and his voice was heard on a much broader basis. From then on, his singing life changes .
@WhiteIsTriColour, sorry, May I make a slight correction please. Zhou Shen did not fail thru and thru in dentistry. It was basically because the course and all course materials were in Ukrainian/Russian and he found himself having had to do both text translations (into Chinese ) and study, day and night, almost 7/24. He realised at that rate, he would, not only take double the time to complete the course, but also at the great expense of his health. He then decided to switch to music, a global language.
I don't hate his voice but most of the live performances of his I've come across on UA-cam sound too perfect. Great singers like Diana Ross, Andrea Bocelli, Sade, Mariah Carey sound somewhat different from their recordings when singing live. I've just learned today that Chinese TV uses a lot of post production pitch corrections and sound editing for recorded "live" performances.

Zhou Shen is just stunning. Not only does he sing so purely and ethereally, but he is also incredibly versatile and he is funny. Dalabengba is definitely the next song you should listen to by Zhou Shen. It's up tempo, humorous and what he does in it will blow your mind.
Zhou Shen started early with singing, joined the school choir and won the first place repeatedly in choir competitions. But when he hit puberty his voice didn't significantly change. Since he still sounded like a girl in middle school he was ridiculed by his classmates and they were calling him names. Because of the discrimination he experienced, he became more and more silent. He didn't sing on stage for three years in junior high school. Fortunately he regained confidence and was able to make his uniqueness his strength. He studied Bel Canto at the Ukrainian Conservatory of Music and today he is one of the most popular singers in China. Zhou Shen plays the piano, guitar and clarinet. He can speak five foreign languages: English, Ukrainian, Russian, Italian and Polish (his French is pretty decent too) and he sings in even more languages. I love his angelic voice. For more wonderful performances I recommend his duets with Sa Dingding (a Chinese singer and songwriter) "Upwards to the moon" and "Flower walking freely", but you can't go wrong with any of his performances. He sings even higher in those duets. For a great spooky performance I suggest "The Song of Heaven Island" (I can send you a link with English subs). For an upbeat, rocky song, check out his cover of "Unravel". "Zhou" is pronounced like "Joe" with the J sounding a bit sharper like the "Ch" in Charlie. BTW, Charlie is Zhou Shen's Western name.

Great to see you discover Zhou Shen! He actually sings in many "voices" in different genres. His surname is pronounced like the name Joe (with a softer J), Shen is his given name. Please check out his other offerings such as Heavenly Island and Big Fish, also Knock Knock, he's even done some more punk rock things, or rock ballads like Monster. Please go down this rabbit hole! The only comparison to Dimash is that they both are totally unique and so varied in their abilities and able to sing in numerous languages. I've heard native Italians praise his abilities in singing in italian sounding as a native speaker, not to mention Russian, Ukranian, Japanese, etc. etc.
Per your recommendation - you must do Ring the Doorbell and Listen to Myself (performance from Singer 2020) and Unravel (Japanese Performance) for more rock-like performances. To really experience his ethereal tone, you must do Big Fish (I recommend the most recent performance from his Time Concert series) and Lang Ting Xu. You do not know how happy you made me today when I saw that you were reacting to Zhou (sounds like Joe) Shen. He is amazing. His voice is one of a kind. He is the sweetest, humblest person. He was bullied a lot growing up due to his size and voice so he lacked confidence in singing. He planned to be a dentist but a professor heard him sing and convinced him to become a singer. How exciting !!! You have found Zhou Shen. Fantastic. This was from a most tremendous competition called Super Vocal, for Opera and Musical theatre, classically trained voices. Some top notch opera singers and some still at uni and only 18 years old. The head judge, a world class baritone said Zhou Shen has one of the rarest voices in the world. Other Countertenors have a contrived sound, he has a real voice. As others have said he didn't grow and mature normally, so has developed this unique voice. They call him the walking voice tuner as he has perfect pitch. His bel canto training has led to his wonderful singing style, and you will pick that up throughout his songs. He is now huge in China and much loved by many of us in the West. So special. I can't wait for more. I believe that every great singer has the right to, and should be evaluated on, his or her own vocal qualities in combination with their own unique assets.🎶💫 That being said, Dimash has and is inspiring new and exciting possibilities for other singers! Zhou Shen may possibly be inspired by Dimash and also the Operatic Asian tradition of men training to sing the female roles. It's really exciting to see how Eastern and Western music is evolving from both (and maybe other) Classical training approaches - I ❤it, and I ❤❤❤ your engaging way of bringing these singers to us! Zhou Shen has mentioned his idols are Teresa Teng and Wong Faye and that he spent a lot of his childhood learning to sing their songs along with cartoon theme songs, along with singing requested songs for red envelopes as a child. XD Dimash is slightly younger than Zhou Shen, with musical parents and a formal classic music background. Zhou Shen doesn't come from a singing family and leans more towards pop music, but incorporates elements of Bel Canto from his college schooling. They have a similar love of music and a similar love of incorporating Bel Canto into other music genres, but while they know of each other, I don't think one influenced the other's interests. It is exciting to see both transcend language and genre barriers in their musical approaches.
Just a correction: Zhou Shen is not trained to sing like female. It’s his natural voice and sounds more like a child voice. This possibly is because his voice didn’t change in puberty.

Zhou Shen is iconic, unique. He has arguably the highest male chest voice in modern times, but he's so much more. He is 30 now, and is really loved and acclaimed by China's pop music fans of all ages. ShenShen had a rocky road to success, starting with teasing and bullying by teen peers when his voice did not drop at puberty. He did not get accepted to study music at the Chinese university he chose, so his parents sent him to Ukraine to study dentistry. He knew this was not his true path, and turned back to bel canto, training as a leggiero tenor at University of Lviv. In this performance - part of a 2018 Hunan TV reality show spotlighting young men who sing western-style opera and musical theater, a little-appreciated niche in China - Shen sings as a self-taught 16:58 countertenor or sopranist. He struggled with nerves and insecurities throughout the course of the show, but his 35 fellow singers supported him and continued the encouragement after the show ended.

@@莞吟 Thank you for you correction and clarification. I did not mean to imply that Zhou Shen needed "Super Vocal" show to advance his career. He was already well on his way. I noted that during auditions for that show, the producers expressed surprise that Shen wanted to participate, as he did not need the small exposure the show provided. "Super Vocal" was one of the first playlists containing Shen (singing songs familiar to an English-only speaker who is not proficient with social media - I am old!) that UA-cam suggested for me. An "intro," of sorts. Thanks again! I hope that more old Americans will listen to great music from brilliant singers outside the US and Europe.

Zhou Shen is one of my favorite singer since I discovered him. His voice is beautiful and he can sing anything. He has so many awesome videos that it is hard to pick one. Good luck with that! But yes, we want to see more of Zhou Shen for sure! ❤
The softness and airiness of all shades of Zhou Shen's childish female and male voice make the singing very engaging and addictive. Probably Zhou Shen's most emotional song. As he himself said, he always cries when singing this song, because here he sings not only about the cat that was rejected by the tribe, but also about himself, because he was bullied and rejected because of his exceptional voice. With hope, he asks them to approach him and accept him as he is, and he will sincerely repay them with his gift.
ZhouShen faced tons of haters bcoz of his voice. He failed thru and thru as a dentistry student and changed his major to vocal training. One of the Voice of China’s producers scouted him as he posted singing videos on social media. Despite his amazing performance, his team coach dumped him half way. Then by chance he was invited to do a demo for DaYu(BigFish), and he became singer of the OST and his voice was heard on a much broader basis. From then on, his singing life changes .

It was basically because the course and all course materials were in Ukrainian/Russian and he found himself having had to do both text translations (into Chinese ) and study, day and night, almost 7/24. He realised at that rate, he would, not only take double the time to complete the course, but also at the great expense of his health. He then decided to switch to music, a global language.
I don't hate his voice but most of the live performances of his I've come across on UA-cam sound too perfect. Great singers like Diana Ross, Andrea Bocelli, Sade, Mariah Carey sound somewhat different from their recordings when singing live. I've just learned today that Chinese TV uses a lot of post production pitch corrections and sound editing for recorded "live" performances.

The prelude air is a French song from the end of World War II, sung by the famous French singer Edith Piaf, called La Vie En Rose. Zhou Shen is a treasure worth your explore!!!
Zhou Shen started early with singing, joined the school choir and won the first place repeatedly in choir competitions. But when he hit puberty his voice didn't significantly change. Since he still sounded like a girl in middle school he was ridiculed by his classmates and they were calling him names. Because of the discrimination he experienced, he became more and more silent. He didn't sing on stage for three years in junior high school. Fortunately he regained confidence and was able to make his uniqueness his strength. He studied Bel Canto at the Ukrainian Conservatory of Music and today he is one of the most popular singers in China.
Zhou Shen plays the piano, guitar and clarinet. He can speak five foreign languages: English, Ukrainian, Russian, Italian and Polish (his French is pretty decent too) and he sings in even more languages.
I love his angelic voice. For more wonderful performances I recommend his duets with Sa Dingding (a Chinese singer and songwriter) "Upwards to the moon" and "Flower walking freely", but you can't go wrong with any of his performances. He sings even higher in those duets. For a great spooky performance I suggest "The Song of Heaven Island" (I can send you a link with English subs). For an upbeat, rocky song, check out his cover of "Unravel".
"Zhou" is pronounced like "Joe" with the J sounding a bit sharper like the "Ch" in Charlie. BTW, Charlie is Zhou Shen's Western name.

Great to see you discover Zhou Shen! He actually sings in many "voices" in different genres. His surname is pronounced like the name Joe (with a softer J), Shen is his given name. Please check out his other offerings such as Heavenly Island and Big Fish, also Knock Knock, he's even done some more punk rock things, or rock ballads like Monster. Please go down this rabbit hole! The only comparison to Dimash is that they both are totally unique and so varied in their abilities and able to sing in numerous languages. I've heard native Italians praise his abilities in singing in italian sounding as a native speaker, not to mention Russian, Ukranian, Japanese, etc. etc.

Per your recommendation - you must do Ring the Doorbell and Listen to Myself (performance from Singer 2020) and Unravel (Japanese Performance) for more rock-like performances. To really experience his ethereal tone, you must do Big Fish (I recommend the most recent performance from his Time Concert series) and Lang Ting Xu. You do not know how happy you made me today when I saw that you were reacting to Zhou (sounds like Joe) Shen. He is amazing. His voice is one of a kind. He is the sweetest, humblest person. He was bullied a lot growing up due to his size and voice so he lacked confidence in singing. He planned to be a dentist but a professor heard him sing and convinced him to become a singer. He is mainly self-taught - constantly growing. He did study bel canto in Ukraine. He speaks 7 languages and sings many different genres. He is beloved in China and is now one of their biggest singers/stars. His vocal abilities are amazing. I don't think there is anything that he can not sing. You have to see other songs as this performance does not even begin to show his full capabilities. Again - once you see more - you will be blown away. His Chinese songs are beyond beautiful and sings a lot of OSTs for Chinese movies especially historical movies. His voice is instantly recognizable. He is famous for his bel canto and soprano voice and the ethereal quality of his tone. Check out his various performances in the Time Concert Series - Andy, Big Fish, and Humans Are. How exciting !!! You have found Zhou Shen. Fantastic. This was from a most tremendous competition called Super Vocal, for Opera and Musical theatre, classically trained voices. Some top notch opera singers and some still at uni and only 18 years old. The head judge, a world class baritone said Zhou Shen has one of the rarest voices in the world. Other Countertenors have a contrived sound, he has a real voice. As others have said he didn't grow and mature normally, so has developed this unique voice. They call him the walking voice tuner as he has perfect pitch. His bel canto training has led to his wonderful singing style, and you will pick that up throughout his songs. He is now huge in China and much loved by many of us in the West. So special. I can't wait for more. Try, Time to Say Goodbye (first audition, so very nervous) or The Lonely Goatherd.( his breakthrough song,watch the judges reaction if you can) More please.

That being said, Dimash has and is inspiring new and exciting possibilities for other singers! Zhou Shen may possibly be inspired by Dimash and also the Operatic Asian tradition of men training to sing the female roles.

Zhou Shen has mentioned his idols are Teresa Teng and Wong Faye and that he spent a lot of his childhood learning to sing their songs along with cartoon theme songs, along with singing requested songs for red envelopes as a child. XD
Dimash is slightly younger than Zhou Shen, with musical parents and a formal classic music background. Zhou Shen doesn't come from a singing family and leans more towards pop music, but incorporates elements of Bel Canto from his college schooling. They have a similar love of music and a similar love of incorporating Bel Canto into other music genres, but while they know of each other, I don't think one influenced the other's interests. It is exciting to see both transcend language and genre barriers in their musical approaches.

Just a correction: Zhou Shen is not trained to sing like female. It’s his natural voice and sounds more like a child voice. This possibly is because his voice didn’t change in puberty.
