Hey Doodle, thanks for beginner rider tips. I’m 78 and just bought my 3rd motorcycle after not riding for 20 years so I feel like a beginner rider. I saw a video you did while riding in my neighborhood. I heard you mention Helen and Suches. I’m in Hayesville, NC so now the big challenge is the weather - finding days warm enough to ride. Today’s high was 44. Too cold! I’m a big fan of your channel and Moto Jitsu and MCRider and parking lot practice. I’m close to Atlanta so I plan to take Ride Like a Pro courses in the spring. Keep the good content coming. Being a girl rider can be lonely but I’ve got a couple cool guy riders who are mentoring me until I can get some experience.
I had an S40 a few years back and it was a nice bike it helped me a lot being lighter and smaller. I learned so much on that bike I am a "new" older old rider that had not be riding for years. Took the beginner class that is required in Virginia to get your license. l let my original laps many many years ago. The class is great and I am glad it is required for all riders to get a license. It took a while to get my bike legs back. I did a lot of parking lots. Until I improved my skills That was about 6 years ago, now I need that advance class to improve my U turns with my Kawasaki Vulcan 900. It is a bigger bike and I have been riding it for over two years and still have trouble with the U turns. Glad you wear gear. I started wearing full gear when I stated riding again. More and more people are beginning to respect protection you body. Your a great mentor with your honesty and encouragement.
Great stuff, and it's great to get feedback from a studious new rider. I've tried to make videos for new riders, but hearing from you back when you were actually a new rider is priceless. My wife and I will definitely be referring back to this when she gets her M1, so thank you!
hey lady. great post. I'm a new rider. 1st month. And a crazy powerful bike. not for the power, but for my height. I don't leave my neighborhood yet. great tips.
I love that you mentioned how brave and scared you felt going to pizza! 😂 I felt the same way when I finally got the courage to go across the street to the store. Lol I felt more nervous in parking lots, so I stayed in the back of our unfinished neighborhood. When I was ready to ride around town, I'd leave super early in the morning on the weekends so there werent a lot of people on the road.
Doodle - thank you. I am a new rider and your videos helped me with my decision to purchase a 2013 Suzuki S40. I love the bike. I took the motorcycle safety course over a year ago and will be repeating the course in 2 more weeks. I took the bike out today at the college parking lot just to practice and I will be staying locally for the next couple of weeks.
No rush hour traffic for me! (and I live in the LA area) I am blessed that I work in the opposite direction of traffic. Haven't taken it on the freeway to work yet just testing it out on the weekends when there are less people out. With gear I don't really have to worry about it because my office has a very relaxed dress code and we rarely get visitors ;)
Lol yep its a good confidence booster for me cause there's more people out. Soon I want to try the freeway but the freeways down here in LA are crazy! lol
Good experienced people enjoy mentoring noobs. They recognize that the more in the tribe the merrier. Insecure weasels enjoy patronizing and putting down noobs. It's the only way they can feel good about themselves.
This definitely helps me out as I am newbie rider, in the market to buy a Honda shadow or Yamaha v star, I'm a big old boy and cruiser fits me best, so excited!! I really enjoy your channel 👍
Hey Miss Doodle, i’ve been following you for sometime now and I still consider myself a newbie. Not much time on the sea and really haven’t gone on the freeway other than entering and exiting. I have to say I loved your tip on sitting on the bike in the garage and turning it on and playing with the friction zone. I think that’s an excellent tip and I’m going to start doing that. I was doing fine on my Honda rebel 250, I felt like I was on a couch! I know have Honda Rebel 500, shortly after purchasing it I had an accident and I’ve been nervous each time I get on the bike. I am changing out the levers because my fingers are short but I will be doing exactly what you just said about learning the friction zone even if it’s in the garage. I’m out here in California and we are going through a massive heatwave 🥵 so riding right now it’s just not an option.
Great advice! I really enjoyed hearing how you slowly progressed throw levels of difficulty. I am a month old rider and here are my issues. I took the msf course and now I take my motorcycle for runs in the city (Denver) I may go to work, or run errands and such. My car is broken so I have no choice. I go to the parking lot almost daily and practice but I am still pretty rough. Even simple stuff like stops and go's I am very spotty... some are smooth some not so much... My slow maneuvering is pretty basic, I can go slow but have my moments where I don't feel very stable for instance. My overall consistency concerns me to be honest. I can do what I can do as a new rider, but I hate that half the time looks pretty sketchy... my lack of consistency is driving me crazy. So I totally hear you on taking more classes. But here is the thing, I just took the msf and when I go online here in Denver the one place I found to take more classes has certain requirements regarding experience before being able to enroll in their courses. So what do I do? I mean, I would love to take more courses...
I don’t know! What are their requirements? Are you near Colorado Springs? Ride Like a Pro offers courses there www.ridelikeapro.com/training-locations/colorado/
Hi Doodle, some great advice for beginners, don't jump in at the deep end, baby steps and just look at you now, you could well be an instructor, you have a good head on your shoulders.
Hello Doodle great videos, I enjoy watching them as I also have an s40 orange and I love it. I have only 4 months riding and will be taking the slow maneuver class soon. Find your videos very informative for newbies and funny. I haven't watch all your videos but if you can talk more about Hwy and big trucks (that is scary for me)
Hi Kristen, so glad you enjoy and YAY an S40 sister!! Hmm.... highways and big trucks... I'll make a video about it! :D And if you want a gist now... highways I go slower than I would in my car, b/c I'm not as good a rider as I am a driver, a lot less experience. I definitely need a windscreen at highway speeds eventually as the wind strains my neck as I keep it straight. Trucks I stay as far as possible b/c their wind is so strong it makes me wobble.
I really need to catch up on your vids! You make some awesome points here, a lot of this I've told my friend as she began riding lol. She rides the same bike as you! Her name is TealMonster, you might see her on your page soon if she hasn't already subbed! :D
Hi Carolyn, I've been following your riding progression and it's been very helpful - thanks. I am finishing my MSF course and wondering, knowing what you do now, do you think the Triple R a good bike for a beginner?
Mmm- I will be making an updated review on it - it’s very torquey so I would only recommend it as a beginner bike for those who are disciplined enough to not use all its power before they have more practice with it
No doubd for riding every possible time is good, but me i'm in Canada up north i must put the bike aside from december to april because of snow and ice, we can't motorcycling up northall year long , it is more like a treat than a need but once you'v been bite you are an addict! we have to compensate and take vacation in the south like Florida and lease a bike for a couple of weeks or more!!
you never graduate, you only ever gain the confidence and skill to try somewhere else. never turn your back on the carpark and keep going back to practice the basics.
Riding the motorcycle at night. You have to be more alerts and more cautious. And Have good lighting in front. At night possums are always out cats are running across Bicycles you name it are all out there at night Pay attention to the road in front of you 4 holes. That's why bikers put on so many lights in front. Even fog lights. I thought I bring this up because I never see you ride at night!!! . Be safe enjoy Your night ride.
Hi doodle I just wanted to say I like your vids I was watching your riding Style and I picked up a couple of tips about Lane position I noticed you ride in the slow lane all the way to the right that's good for cruising like you were doing but when you're traveling you want to leave the most options open I prefer the fast lane and riding all the way to the center line that gives you room to go right or left depending on anything happening around you I also bounce right and left on my Lane depending on oncoming traffic when cars are on coming I ride to the right and when there are no cars coming I ride to the left keeping my right open from any cars pulling out on me and then there's something I called the five mile per hour rule when you driving in traffic the last thing you want is a car pacing you so you don't want to ride with traffic if you don't have to so always goes slightly faster and that way you can be passing people instead of them riding up on you or beside you which is where the danger really lies you'll feel more comfortable doing that once you get better than a year underneath your belt if you haven't already and one last thing always ride as though nobody can see you. You are a ghost on a Mad Max Road Drive accordingly people fly up two stops immediately put your hand on the front brake and your foot on the rear brake and if it looks really scary go ahead and let your bike slow down on its own tell you get passed the person I wish you all the best it is so cool to see beautiful women out riding. 😍👍😇
Well, you do ride ! And I appreciated your efforts and attitude. I enjoyed your video and I do respect you ( who cares James ! ). However... I still think you're a living doll !! Oops, there I go again!
85 - 90 mph? In stock set-up, No. True top speed is probably around 80, perhaps a little more depending on where you are. The bike is set-up to run slightly lean at sea level. It's an old fashioned carbureted bike that has to meet modern emission standards. You can modify the carburation quite easily to improve the situation somewhat. You can increase power sequentially by increasing flow through the intake and the exhaust, then modify the cam timing, then increase the compression ratio. But, unless you are a serial tinkerer, most of us are just better off buying a more powerful bike. With the stock rear tire, the speedometer will read slightly higher values, so you may get people telling you they've had it up to higher speed. Many people replace the 140/80 stock rear tire with a 140/90. This increases the tire diameter about 4% and brings the speedo closer to reality.
It would be a good thing to the classes option here🙁 I just took the course a couple of weeks ago and got my bike yesterday. Do you think is a good idea to practice in my neighborhood ? I really wanna do it! 😩

man this is a great conversation for beginning riders and staying level headed without letting your ego take over like many new riders do.

Very good advise. Alot of people need to hear that. Thank you.
hey lady. great post. I'm a new rider. 1st month. And a crazy powerful bike. not for the power, but for my height. I don't leave my neighborhood yet. great tips.
Great! I didn't leave the neighborhood for months either :D
Psychnurse Chris very smart i started on a 300 and i made some mistakes that my bike forgave me for that my r6 wouldnt have take it slow
Once again, you're fun to watch, and listen to, and most of all down to earth transparency.
I love that you mentioned how brave and scared you felt going to pizza! 😂 I felt the same way when I finally got the courage to go across the street to the store. I've ridden to Suches Ga. a few times for the XS560 Yamaha rally. It's beautiful there. Your videos are so fun. Thanks! :)
Thanks for taking the courage to "tell people what to do" - good stuff here!
Good advice, just bought my first bike and so far I can only take around my local neighbourhood but I'll get there soon
Doodle - thank you. I am a new rider and your videos helped me with my decision to purchase a 2013 Suzuki S40. I love the bike. +Cindy Cooney that is awesome that makes me so glad!!! 😄😄😄 way to practice those skills again, you'll be out maneuvering other riders in no time!
Yes, practice as much as possible. Over time it makes a big difference.
Good video, im 2 months in my self. Doing a lot of the same things you talked about. Thanks.
great advice! I've been trying to ride to work twice a week. I feel like every day I feel more confident
+Katherine G oh dang I don't even do that! Do you get stuck in rush hour traffic? When you get to work do you change out of any gear?
No rush hour traffic for me! (and I live in the LA area) I am blessed that I work in the opposite direction of traffic. Haven't taken it on the freeway to work yet just testing it out on the weekends when there are less people out. With gear I don't really have to worry about it because my office has a very relaxed dress code and we rarely get visitors ;)
+Katherine G awesome!! I should make riding to work a goal once I get the courage to stop keeping it a secret outside of UA-cam!
Lol yep its a good confidence booster for me cause there's more people out. Soon I want to try the freeway but the freeways down here in LA are crazy! lol
+Katherine G 😱😱😱😱 I think it's ok if you avoid those LA freeways for a long time!
Good experienced people enjoy mentoring noobs. They recognize that the more in the tribe the merrier.

It would be great if the vast majority of commuting was people on bikes
@@UnknownMoses traffic would nearly disappear.

The more you ride the better you’ll get. I agree 100% about taking courses.
Glad I am upgrading my headlight to a sportster one on my LS650
I did it trial by fire style. Two days after I bought by first bike I hopped on the highway and rode thirty miles.
Samuel Frade same. A couple days after I took my bike out into the mountains. I could drive a standard transmission car though
Good video with sound advice , I like it 👍 Be safe out there

Prior to taking your MSF course did you have any prior experience? Did you know have to drive a manual stick shift?
Nope! Had never used manual anything, and closest thing was I had ridden a scooter before. Didn't even know how to turn a bike on!
Hey Doodle, how fast can the Suzuki accelerate to 60mph? And can it keep 85-90 mph for riding on the German highway? Greetings!
+TheOccO It goes 0-60mph in 8 seconds. 85-90mph!? I haven't gone faster than 70mph, daredevil!!
+Doodle On A Motorcycle Thanks for the fast reply! :)
+TheOccO you're welcome!

You can't always be perfect. Ride with her. She was new once
you know how your insurance lowers a bit if you take the MSF course, will it lowers more if you take both the Advanced and beginner MSF course?
I don't know- some insurance will only give one course discount- Progressive didn't let me keep lowering my insurance with the 8 classes I took ;D
Doodle On A Motorcycle wait, how many classes are there? lol i thought there’s just basic intermediate and advanced?..
I'm a agent at Allstate. We only recognize only the first MSF class. I believe State Farm and Farm Bureau is the same.

What if ur a full time MOM, My bike has debris accumulating.
So that is Goood!
Hi doodle , do you ever get scared with potholes or stuff in the road
Not really! They're more uncomfortable than dangerous
Just subbed, good video
Thanks, CMS!
Welcome to the team I’ve been a fan of doodle since 1996 or 97’
It would be a good thing to the classes option here🙁 I just took the course a couple of weeks ago and got my bike yesterday. Do you think is a good idea to practice in my neighborhood ? I really wanna do it! 😩
I did! Stuck to neighborhoods for months
YOU SOUND GOOD ...does youtube have inbox? 😋
Your such a girl “ I love night riding the odometers all lit up n nice “ 🤣😂🤣 be safe ...great advise 👍🏾
What's up with the mono sound? Pretty annoying. Good vid though. All the best with the channel.
LOL thanks! Are you going to buy me a new mic set up?? :D :D :D
Oh great, I didn't notice the mono till you pointed it out.
Why do you choose the right side of the lane
John Smith cycle cruza recommends this. To keep cars from squeezing through your right side.
What kinda pizza did you get that day?
