    In college (in the 60s) I learned that you can use a semicolon even if you have one of the conjunctions you mentioned are no no-nos (but, or, and,…) if your sentence is a compound sentence made up of more than two complete sentences which would normally be separated by commas, but by substituting the semicolon for one of the commas your compound sentence is made clearer. As an example, consider this sentence.
    One of the two politicians was trying to explain a controversial policy, but his opponent interrupted him with his own reasons for opposing the policy, which in turn caused the audience to take sides, and they began to shout at each other, giving the security people reason to take steps to ensure there would be no violence, but instead of pacifying the audience, the steps the security people took increased the emotional level, and the audience began to fight.
    As you can see there are many commas in this sentence; some of them separate complete sentences, and others only serve to add detail. One way to help is to use a semicolon to cut down on the use of commas and hopefully bring a little more clarity to the thoughts contained in the sentence. You could for example write the sentence with a semicolon as shown below just before the conjunction ‘but’.
    One of the two politicians was trying to explain a controversial policy, but his opponent interrupted him with his own reasons for opposing the policy, which in turn caused the audience to take sides, and they began to shout at each other, giving the security people reason to take steps to ensure there would be no violence; but instead of pacifying the audience, the steps the security people took increased the emotional level, and the audience began to fight.
    The semicolon gives a little longer pause than the comma thereby helping to make the sentence clearer. Perhaps, as it seems to be common practice now days, what was once acceptable no longer is, and what was once unacceptable now is.

  • @bryangl1
    @bryangl1 4 роки тому +12

    "Using a semicolon will show you as a more intelligent etc etc person"!! In Australia we learn punctuation in Grade school. As for your examples, 'I'm feeling unwell; I can't go to the meeting." - that's plainly wrong. "I'm feeling unwell SO I can't go to the meeting." Yes, your two parts are sentences - but primitive ones such as an infant might use, they are far too simplistic for adult writing. A semicolon does NOT link what are clearly separate sentences. "He wants to study overseas, therefore he needs to take the (whatever that bit is)": Your comma is a misuse of the comma in modern writing and you are using the semicolon where a comma is adequate (not only adequate but correct).
