Thanks for sharing JIM. I really like how you have the breakdown of the operating scheme of the railroad as a WHOLE , this is really refreshing. Most model railroad videos don t break down the operating picture as a whole . Your editing here REALLY tells the story better than most videos that I have watched. GREAT JOB!

Very interesting. Old school, nice authentic track work and operation. You packed allot of operation into relatively small footprint. love all the online industry. RR

Excellent presentation of an operations session on a very interesting and nicely scenic'd layout including the helix. Your narration is also excellent. Thanks for sharing. I will send this link to my fellow club members so that we may all learn how to enjoy an ops session. Cheers from the Train Lord in South Australia.

Very nice layout. I lived in Milpitas and I made trips to SC but I never knew how the railroad got there. Thank You for sharing your railroad and knowledge with us

Because of You Tube and Wikipedia, I've learned incredible details and fascinating histories of railroads: Erie Lackawanna, Reading, Penn Central...so Western Pacific is next. Orange and silver was likely their best paint scheme. Great scenery! My favorite was the freight winding through those buildings and thundering through that rustic looking junction. Some nice, warm color combinations in the scenery and scenes.

Very nice Jim. It's been a few years since I operated on the SCN and you've made a lot of progress on scenery. Layout looks terrific. The methodical way you show how 271 operates is a great illustration for newbe operators so they can get a feel for how much fun it is to "operate" rather than just run trains.

A very nice video and layout. I have plans to expand my own HO scale layout, though as I'll be modeling the 1940s-1950s steam era, I don't believe it will be quite as modern as yours.

I'm sure it's in the union contract that the switch crew does the set outs and pick ups for the road crews, but that helper needs a "head light" on the rear to operate in helper service 😜. Nice layout and video.

as far as the switch crews doing pick ups and set outs, prior to the 70s, yard crews did do it as, "picking up cars to go forward in your own train" was considered "switching" according to union agreements... but once the 70s hit, they changed it... the 72' agreement says a road crew can without any additional compensation, make one straight pick up at the initial terminal, in addition to your own train and also do the same at the final terminal... future agreements added more moves, two straight pick ups, then three... but yea the work rules changed a LOT once the 70s hit... a lot of it had to do with the emerging truck competition and the railroads had to become more competitive... some of the working agreements just didn't allow them to be more competitive

Hello. What a great video on operations. I have to second Mike Stewarts Comments. Being new to operations, the methodical way you presented the video was very easy to follow and understand. At the beginning of building the consist, the cutting in of the helper engine and the end. Well done. Lynn

Oh my... someone actually modeled the original Southern Pacific (ex-South Pacific Coast Railroad) line between Los Gatos and Santa Cruz, and the Coast Line Railroad!
Little known history but the Coast Line Railroad up to Davenport was entirely built to rival the Ocean Shore Railroad, which plan was to operate a interurban electric railroad from San Francisco to Santa Cruz via the coast!

Great performance and layout, yet I prefer a bit higher speed to mark the difference between the speed in a yard and the speed on main tracks.
