- Jan Burres, Chris McCandless's friend from "the Slab" in southern California, visited Bus 142 in March 2011 with McCandless's parents, Walt and Billie. The trip, guided by Fairbanks adventurer and good guy Ed Plumb, was a gift from Walt and Billie to their friends who helped with the book of Chris's photos, Back to the Wild.
God bless Chris McCandless. A man I never met but he has affected my life in a way nobody ever has, teaching me to appreciate beauty and what God has put around me
We were all very impressed with Jan, who was deeply moved by being out there.

She seemed like an awesome person in the show...and she seems the same in real life. A kind, gentle, soul.
She is. Miss Jan is amazing. I love her. I have known her for almost 4 years now. It is now that she's on her deathbed that I realized a video was made about her. I'll miss her
I loved to see Jan Burres. This shows that Chris, unlike others adventures, wasn't a person interested to walk with just young and beautiful people. He didn't choose his friends by formal education or appearance.
Speak from what you know, not from what you don't. You know that Christopher appreciated many different people. You don't, however, know shit about anyone else so don't make such blanket statements about people that you've never met or likely will ever meet.

She probably wasn't that much older than he was back then. She would've probably been in her early 30's.

Jan Burres - You were indeed a kind-hearted & awesome lady to the late Chris McCandless! And in a way - you made Chris happy with the warm company you gave him for awhile before his death - saving his sanity from the sad & painful issues he was going through re his parents; Chris was so lucky to have met you from the kindness that you gave him in his short lifetime...
The whole point to Chris McCandless life - in the end - was that we all need friendship, companionship. People who use his story to set out alone are ignorant to his final message to us all.
Who knows someone could have such a impact on my life. Because of his life i have made trips to Alaska to experience what he wanted us all to see. True beauty.
I agree there is a deeper reason why left his home. And look at what he accomplished look at these amazing people he met Along his journey. Wayne , franz and jan. He was right happiness only real when shared. And he experienced the best two years of his life. You think he'd do it differently if given another opportunity? Hell no his journey was perfect but not the ending
It's about the freedom and the courage to be deffrent and see the world instead of working your life away. No one wants to die with out truely seeing the world.
Chris was a compassionate caring person! One of the humblest people I’ve ever meet in Healy Alaska!

This life has always been my dream since a young boy, I eventually came across this story and it made me believe it was possible, I've traveled from England and am now in America I'm 18 and will be looking for my place which I belong, in Alaska. I hope I find it.

Darren McCann How are they ignorant? Some people just get tired of being around all the drama and the pain and the craziness that comes with being apart of their current society, and they just want to break free from that - wipe the slate clean. Yes, in the end, Alex probably started missing human interaction, and after befriending Jan, and Franz, and Wayne, and all the many other people that he met in his travels, I can understand why he would. Maybe the reason why some people have been inspired by Alex to "up-n'-leave" is not because they don't believe in friendship or companionship - maybe it's because they, in fact, *do* believe, and they want to find their Jans, Franzs, and Waynes in the vast Wild that is yet unexplored.

Just saw the movie on netflix, did not expect the ending as it was, followed by Wikipedia.
So sad for him and family, esp his sister.
Touched by the kindness of the people he met.
This world is messed up and can't wait for Gods Kingdom.

To see all these people are real...idk it makes it so sad. He was just a great dude who underestimated nature. So depressing.

Well I'm about a quarter deep into the book and I've seen the movie. So far I would venture to say his parents were not the kind of people with a full 100% single motivation on all things. Like when you hear the anekdote about buying him a car for example, especially in the movie I get a sense it's partially, maybe mainly for the gesture itself. Idk I can't find the exact words I want to describe it with, it's not very negative but it's like muddy water, not quite healthy. I hope I makes sense.

The only mistake Chris made was over estimating his ability and under estimating the wild.

All of you who have wrote about Jan being a nice sweet person have obviously never met her or stayed at Souls Harbor here in Joplin Missouri. Maybe at one time she was kind and caring. Not now. She is a bully in every sense of the word. When the camera is on her or she is pandering to potential shelter donors she puts on an act. When she is gone I don't think many Joplin homeless people will be sad. I have stayed at Souls Harbor and couldn't take more than 2 weeks there.

So, they make money? Who the f cares??? This is their way of giving back something that Chris McCandless gave to the world and this is their way of grieving.If my son made this incredible spiritual,emotional, and physical journey and died, I would do the same to honor him.

Sounds like the kid was a spoiled brat who was immature and ungrateful, all that money he so "heroically" gave away or burned all came from his parents. The college education he shit all over ... Paid for by mommy and daddy. Sure he worked off jobs afterwards but I don't see why he's held as a hero . That said I loved the movie and the book was great also
People forget he was just running away from a bad home life, and was very ill prepared. He still had multiple forms of ID and $300 . He should not be worshipped. He was extremely foolish.
Book and a film was enough. A lot of people talking about a Man that chose not to be around them. They are all giving there opinion and its all based on nothing, all guesswork and conjecture.
