The Russians don't destroy Kyiv but they attack it indeed. A large power plant has currently been attacked and the country is facing a blackout. Even if the intensity of the attacks cannot be compared to those in the east, the entire country is a war zone. You can see from the rockets that find their way to Poland.
I don't think it is accurate to assign one voice to all of US media. Still, having Russians bomb you is a pretty good definition of being in a war zone, even if, due to incompetence, drunkenness, or want of supplies, the Russkies can't bomb everyone all the time.
