So, in case no one else does it I’ll explain the shield.
Basically it’s a kinetic shield similar to black panther, but a lot stronger. Anything, ANYTHING moving a certain speed doesn’t penetrate the shield, period. You have to move slowly, specifically the speed of air or slower to penetrate it. Hence the line,”the slow blade penetrates the shield.” In the books there was only one weapon that can break the shield, but the feedback loop it caused would detonate both the target and the gunner to explode with the force of a nuclear warhead. Essentially, the shield rendered all ranged weapons obsolete, hence the reliance on blades.

Based on what I’ve read on him and Gurney, they were the best at this kind of combat; they knew the optimal speed for getting through the shield, so it checks out. Just wanted to clear up some stuff...
The emperor kicked the Harkonnerns from Arrakis (led by the fat guy, Baron Harkonnen), and then told the Atreides to come in and take control. It wasn't voluntary. The world of dune is set in a feudal empire where the emperor rules above the great houses (such as Atreides and Harkonnen). Besides, there's no guns because shields exist and they stop any bullets. Another thing is that there are two separate "prophecies". There's "the one" (full name Kwisatz Haderach, mentioned at the beginning with the test of the box), and there's the Lisan Al Gaib. The first one is a superbeing that will be able to see the future clearly, and the second one is a messiah that will lead the fremen to paradise. By coincidence, these 2 seem to line up with Paul.

The Atreides aren't stealing the Spice (at least not from the Harkonnens, from the Fremen yes, but that's not really the point here). The Emperor has commanded them to take over from the Harkonnens so that the Harkonnens will attack House Atreides, weakening both houses in the process. The Harkonnens got filthy rich mining the Spice and House Atreides got more and more influential in the Landsraad (a council of all the great houses) so both could get dangerous to the Emperor.

The Hunter Seeker didn't attack Paul because the room was poorly lit, and the suspensor field allowing it to fly causes distortions in the operators view. Paul moving into the hologram further distorted his shape, and the fact he didn't even flinch when it flew towards him caused the operator to think it wasn't a living being. The door opening was enough motion for the operator to see and lock onto, and likely assumed it was Paul returning to his room.

The movie definitely plays fast and loose with what counts as fast vs slow - the general consensus based on the fight choreo and the prop weapons' designs seems to be that a short, sharp stabbing motion won't penetrate, but a slicing or slashing motion can, because the resistance of slicing across a surface in an arc is enough to make it slower. Seb incase you didn’t get this part, The emperor (who isn’t seen in this movie) ordered the harkonens to leave arrakis and let house atredies take over in their stead to fulfill spice production. In the process they sabotaged the atredies to make sure they don’t fulfill their duty so the emperor can use that as an excuse to execute them all using the harkonens who would be honored to kill every atredies since both houses are mortal enemies. But ofc the emperor’s army (the saurdukaar) helped them in the fight, he didn’t just let the harkonens fight on their own since house atredies have the best fighters in the emperium. The reason why the emperor betrayed the atredies this way is because he is jealous of duke leto (Oscar Isaac) because he is gaining respect and power from the great houses who also look to him for leadership.

The technology that allows interstellar travel is the Holtzman drive. You don’t need spice to use the drive. However, in order to safely arrive at your intended destination, incredibly complex calculations are needed to safely navigate through folded space. In the distant past, thinking machine did these calculations. After they were banned due to the Butlerian Jihad, interstellar travel still happened but more than 10% of ships ended up being lost. Then spice was discovered. Consuming spice gave human the power of prescience so a class of humans called Navigators formed a guild. The spice allowed navigators to “foresee” the safe route through folded space, a task that had either been performed by AI or not done at all (resulting in 10% of ships being randomly lost each time they jumped). But again, the Holtzman drive is what actually lets ships jump through space, but its spice that allows the jumps to be reliably safe.

The Scene with Paul and "the box", and the "GOM JABBAR" at his neck held by the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is an iconic scene, as well as a absolutely necessary plot point in Dune. The Bene Gesserits are 1 of 4 factions that are most important in the Dune world/s there are 1. The Bene Gesserit., 2. The Spacing Guild, 3. The houses of the Landstraad, and 4. The Emperor. The Reverend Mother is testing Paul for a possibilty of being the Kwisatz Haderach a super being that can see/travel through both space, and time. The box is a test of pain via nerve induction to see if Paul can use his human ability to overcome any pain, rather than be an animal, and do anything to escape/avoid pain. The Reverend Mother stopped only because Paul had already withstood more pain than ANY female...Therefore proving he is "HUMAN", and not an animal, which is why the Reverend Mother said "Goodbye YOUNG HUMAN", I hope you live"....PS. The director wanted for Timothy to show fear of the Reverend Mother in his face, and actions...the director said that Timothy was actually "in real life" afraid of the actress while playing her part in this scene...one because she is like a famous actress who is respected by everyone on set (Charlotte Rampling), plus her acting ability combined with her eyes, face, and that veil gave her an aura of power. The cast is phenomenal in this film!

The lore basically is that the shields will block anything that is moving a certain speed but will allow things that are moving slowly through (so you can still breath). The existence of shields basically negates guns and makes them useless. So warfare has gone back to melee weapons and fighting styles that involve a quick strike to get near the shield followed by slower movement to penetrate it and stab. The bombs that they were showing basically did the same thing. They fell fast but then they basically had some means of slowing down at the end to slowly go through the shield before exploding.

  • @twofacetoo75

The films don't explain it, sadly, but here's the basic point from the book about guns:
In this world, laser-guns exist, but there's kind of a snag to them. They don't fire out a single bolt of light like in 'Star Wars' or similar franchises, they fire a continuous beam from the gun barrel to the target. Now, the snag is that if the target happens to be wearing an active shield (which almost EVERYBODY is in this world), the laser causes a reaction when it hits the shield. The shield overloads and detonates, but that overload feeds back through the beam of light into the gun, and detonates it too.
So basically, if you laser someone wearing a shield, you kill yourself and everyone around you in the process. This isn't a 'perhaps' thing, this is a guarantee. If you laser a shield, you die. As such, it's too much of a risk for anyone to really both with, so while laser weapons DO exist, nobody cares to use them since they can't be sure if their target is wearing a shield or not.

I honestly think this has the potential to match the Lord of the Rings trilogy, these movies are insane, sooo excited for the third one. I just hope it doesn't get Disney'd like Star Wars. I think my only complaint with these movies is that it sometimes takes me out how there is never even a drop of blood to be seen even though they are slicing each other to pieces, I feel like we need an R rated Dune movie but then again, maybe that's to symbolise Arrakis, how there is so little liquid on the planet that there isn't even enough blood to bleed normally lol

    A few notes though:
    1. The reason they use swords is because pretty much everyone has body shields, which can block quick blows but if a projectile hits them then they detonate with the power of a nuke.
    2. The Harkonens are definitely the bad guys here.

    • @vitaboy
      @vitaboy 19 днів тому +2

Bullets hitting the shield would simply be blocked. Slower moving projectiles like darts can actually penetrate the shield, like the drugged dart that took down Leto.
Energy weapons like lasers, on the other hand, hitting a shield would cause a nuclear explosion, killing both the shooter and the shielded individual. This is why guns are obsolete but lasers exist but used sparingly, while blades have become the primary weapon for soldiers.

About the two guys who rolled their eyes in 2:49 and 5:00, they're called mentats. Essentially, they are human computers whose abilities to analyze information exceed any regular humans by a far margin. You might think their duties should be handled by actual computers but any form of AI is forbidden in the Dune universe. Long story short, they did develop an AI a while ago but it rebelled against humans. They suffered a bloody war against this AI, and while they managed to defeat it, any machine similar to humans has been banned ever since. Humanity focused on developing their minds to replace computers, hence the mentats, as well as Bene Gesserit with their Voice.

Not only does the Spacing Guild use the spice for interstellar travel and the Bene Gesserit use it to enhance their skills, but anyone in the imperium who can afford it, which is only the wealthy because it's so expensive, uses it for the health benefits. Spice is also highly addictive, and withdrawal from it is very dangerous and often deadly. In the books almost everyone wears contact lenses to hide the blue eyes of their addiction. If spice production on Arrakis stops the resulting lack of spice would cause the imperium to collapse. Allthough it's a quote from David Lynch's Dune and not the book, "He who controls the spice controls the universe." is the general sentiment at the time this story takes place. One of the things the Kwisatz Haderach will do is show people a new way of looking at how the spice is controlled.

Can't wait for you to react to the second one. and even greater masterpiece! Denis is brilliant and the cast is absolutely amazing. Also, Stilgar is a tribe leader and Jamis is apart of his tribe. In the books Jamis is described as a hot head by Stilgar, especially because in the movie, Jamis kept trying to push Stilgar to kill them, when he's like "What are we waiting for? We need their water". In the books when this happened, Stilgar had to keep telling Jamis to shut up. Honor is a big thing among fremen in the books, and he felt dishonored being bested by Paul who was a foreigner and child at the times. Jamis challenged them to save face.

Maybe you didn’t really listen when they explained it, but the shields only stop things that are moving fast. That’s why soldiers rarely if ever use guns, the shield technology has rendered guns obsolete. Meanwhile, with hand to hand combat, you can slow down your hits so that they pass through the shield. The only place where guns are a thing is in the Arrakis desert because people don’t wear shields in worm territory (the shield’s vibrations attract worms)

To answer your question about why House Atreides was sent to Arrakis (replacing House Harkonnen) was because the Emperor of the Imperium was growing jealous of the power and influence the Atreides family had over the other Houses within the vast empire. Due to the Emperor being a passive intermediary between all the great Houses, he couldn’t outright attack House Atreides or order one, so he made a deal with the Harkonnens to give them an easy trap to lure the Atreides to their deaths and give them a viable reason to attack (the two Houses have been feuding for thousands of years anyways) allowing for the Harkonnens to eliminate their sworn enemies and for the Emperor to get rid of any competition. War between the Houses is not illegal so the Emperor could claim that he had no involvement with the fighting. In the novel it’s a lot more explicit with the planning of the attack with the Sardaukar (the Emperor’s personal legion of elite soldiers) being disguised in Harkonnen gear to assist them in battle. It’s also a lot more prevalent in the novel that the Atreides know they are going to be ambushed with Duke Leto planning ahead for an incoming battle but what he didn’t account for was a traitor and the sheer scale of the attack. I’m a little disappointed they didn’t include the subplot from the book where Hawat suspects Lady Jessica of being the spy leading them down the wrong path instead of Doctor Yeuh. They didn’t believe he was the spy due to the fact he had gone through Imperial Conditioning essentially stating that he could not be corrupted, but of course the Harkonnens got a hold of his wife and black mailed him into their services (gross fact, it is also hinted that the humanoid spider was what the Harkonnens turned the Doctors wife into).
