The only reason people are bringing up the marketing, NcNutt, is because all the players and female broadcasters have been complaining for the last several years about WNBA pay despite low ratings and revenue. The NBA was already generating more than $150 million in revenue by 1990.

1) If she is on the team or not, this will not be a determining factor if the team wins or loses 2) If the game does not grow - winning or losing means nothing. She is necessary for the WNBA to grow which enables everyone to win. If no one watches and they win who cares? Case and point - I just found out via Stephen A they won 7 gold medals. So they winning but no one cares because no one knows about the league. She is a monster right now. Only the business minded would understand this. Without money nothing works. My salary is higher than the base salary for any WNBA player and I don’t even have a degree. That is ridiculous. They can make 3x more money selling insurance. They have Taurasi on the team, which means it’s clearly not completely about merit. In fact Clark’s and Taurasi’s numbers are nearly identical. Taurasi gets the nod obviously b/c she’s a legend. I’m sure there’s someone who’s playing better than both Taurasi and Clark (arike ogunbowale) who actually deserves that spot, if it was really about merit. So if it’s not solely b/c of merit, and y’all gonna win gold anyway, then there’s really no reason to not have Clark on the team. There’s only up side.

CC is not the best for now but her stats is better than some members. US women's basketball has been aiming to have it recognized globally for so many years. yah we get that but on the marketing side like SAS is talking about, this is the time to promote the WNBA league as well. It will get better attention and viewership if she is with the team USA as she is the most watch WNBA athlete now. Also this will give CC22 the exposure and experience to play internationally and prepare her for the next batch of WNBA to lead in 2028 Olympics.
This circus around Clark will not grow the game because some of the people who are so fanatical about her do not care about women's sports, basketball, or anything past their own cultural agenda. At a point, all of this press and attention will become a distraction and fall back on Clark, especially if her team continues to lose. People are already going after the coach, which will turn into some other weird narrative that paints Clark as some princess who needs saving from some evil force trying to ruin her. In what world does that make her and the women's game look legitimate when treated like a soap opera? In creating the roster for the 2024 Olympic USA Women’s Basketball Team: It shouldn’t be based just Marketing OR just Merit but BOTH! There are too many great veterans in the WNBA that have truly earned their position and status as professionals and Olympians.
